I am thinking about getting into Metal Detecting. Mostly beaches and parks. Nothing serious just a hobby. Anyone have any recommendations on a good one? I want to keep it under $200 if possible.

I have a White's Eagle Spectrum, 2 coils, tons of paperwork, scoop, 2 battery holders and enough ProCell "c" batteries to last a lifetime. It's an older machine but still one of the best. Google it to find out all about it. $300.00 takes it all.

Tesoro Compadre or Sidewinder, new or used. I own one of each, both are great machines. Ebay is about the only place to get one. If you plan on detecting in wet ocean sand, you'll definitely need to do some research for a machine that will "balance" in that environment. Lake/river sand.....no problem.

I use a Fisher Gold Bug Pro for "nugget shooting" (looking for gold) and relic hunting as well as metal detecting. Found quite a bit of stuff at the local beaches like Huntington, Newport, Seal etc. coins, jewelry, toys, needles and razor blades and LOTS of trash.
Found gold (pickers) and old stuff like belt buckles, buttons, tools, pistol frames etc from the early miner days in Azusa canyon and Holcombe Valley.
It a fun hobby, always exciting to get a hit, never know what you will dig up.
I do it here in Idaho now and have just as much fun. Lots of god in these thar hills.
As Azsunfun posted, you will NOT be happy with a $200.00 MD. Cheap ones just make you frustrated and will ruin the experience. And to many new metal detector enthusiast, , The cheap ones will NOT detect gold plus they will not go deep or "discriminate'.
The most expensive thing I found was a 1.5 carrot diamond earring mounted in gold- Zales Jewelry store said worth around $3500.00, found it at Corona del Mar. I always wanted to hit up the channel after a loony toons weekend. the heat, sweat and sun tan lotion- perfect for rings etc.

Boatdoc55 has a nice Whites MD for sale. Whites were one of the first to make good quality, user friendly MD. For $300.00 is a great deal- a good MD to get started.
Oh, and the fact that its "older" means it has less confusing dials, gadgets and computer crap. Simpler the better in most cases.
Care to learn more: Gold Prospectors Association of America > Home (GPAA) I belong to this "club" so I get access to claims and member events that include metal detecting- These guy can teach you everything about MD. I do gold prospecting as well- Sluicing, High-banker, panning etc.
Most prospecting supply stores will allow you to rent a MD prior to purchase but know that a $3000.00 MD does not mean you will hit the mother load.

Right On! The Gold Bug 2 works pretty good too! If you've worked Azusa then you probably have worked the East Fork. Some pics running my Proline 5" diving solo. The color in the pan was taken on bedrock just above Camp Williams where nobody would go because most everyone would chase it up river near or above the bridge. The last day I dredged up there was when they decided to shut it down to dredging and all there is left in the entire area now is trash, diapers, broken bottles, beer cans...etc. etc. It too bad, I spent about 15 years off and on in that area. There's a lot of good gold up there at the end of a day. I also found a some nice pickers with the Gold Bug 2 but everytime I went cruizen through the hills sides above the river I landed up with Poison oak ..lol..

I grew up in Covina so the East Fork was my playground- used to have good times at Fallows Camp after a day of prospecting. Panned all the way to the Bridge to No Were, used to beat the crap out of my Toyota 4x4 in the ORV section, and the fishing used to be really good along the West Fork. I never dredged for gold, saw several guys pull lots of color using this method of mining. To much work for me. Lots of great history in that canyon, everything from the town called Eldoradoville to torpedo testing.

Awesome- Good for you. Now the next thing is to learn how to use the MD correct. You Tube videos and, many machines come with a CD or one can be purchased from the MFG. I did NOT buy mine to make it rich, its the "thrill of the hunt" that does if for me. Have fun and keep us posted of your "finds"
