Unfortunately, this isn't a done deal and may actually be a bigger issue later. They know jailing him before the election would probably drive his approval further, as the verdict did. By doing this, they can slowly tweak things to see if they can drag Kamala in for the win (by whatever means are available) If she isn't able to be "installed", they have time to prepare for the shit show of jailing a president elect.
