Any help greatly appreciated,
Thank you

I'm not sure I've ever seen one in person. if you have an engine SN I can look it up for you. every counter rotater I've ever come across has had a high mount starter

Thank you but Boat is in Florida. Yes it's easy to find top mount. Problem is no room for top mount, it has a bottom mount in it now but I was trying to get a head start and order the part before removing the old. If no other choice I will need to remove and get part number then order and wait.

Thank you,
Gary

I have a pair of 5.7 in my cruiser with a counter rotation motor on the port side. Nothing in the engine is different, all the counter rotation in in the lower unit of the out drive. Here are the part numbers out of the service manual.

Then you DON'T have a counter rotating engine. This is a shaft drive with a B/W trans. It is truly a RH rotation motor.

Thanks to Berry I will be ordering the starter from Hardin.
Thank you for you input and help to all.

when you get to FL post a picture. I'm normally cussing at the pulley side of an inboard engine space wise, and not the "back"

you have my curiosity! 😎

I read P/N as “pin” because of the all caps title and thought you were looking for a bolt or bracket part number… mistake on my part.

Here is a picture of the problem, originally we were going to replace with ARCO top mount but ran into this problem.
This is a 28' Offshore fishing boat with twin 350's and BW 72's. We are replacing all of the possible reliability issues while on land. We plumbed in closed cooling and new engine and trans coolers but did not leave enough space in anticipation of the starters. We will be suffering with your problem and pully interference next week.

May I ask what part number you plan to order?

Just want to be careful because a lot of the Replaces Merc #"s 50-12121A 2, 50-12177A 2, 50-806964A 3, A 4 50-812428A 3, 50-812604A 2, 50-99418A 2 tend to seemingly superseded to a standard rotation Merc number 50-863007A1 Starter Motor Assembly.

Plue the possibility of the following,
If you are replacing an older unit you will need the folllowing parts.

2 pieces 10-8053432 BOLT .375-16 X 4.33

1 piece 11-400211 NUT (M5) STAINLESS STEEL

1 piece 11-806949 NUT (M8-1.5)

Just want to make sure you saw the helpful guides inside the right links before ordering,

I saw that, a bit deceiving, we are going with the API 10071 LH from Hardin Marine.

Thanks for the keen eye.

Glad I could help. Chevy is a Chevy in most cases, even it it says "Mercruiser" on it. Obviously the counter rotation is important, I have not dealt with too many of them.

Hardin has discontinued that starter so it took a little more time and research but I finally got it all sorted and sourced out.
Thank you.

I’ve never paid attention to our cruiser if the counter rotating propeller is on a counter rotating motor. I always assumed the direction change was done in the Vdrive. I’ll have to look when I change the oil next time. It is also 5.7s.
