Nope! I cannot.

Some people's body types just don't float, and I am one of those people.

Swimming is Extremely difficult for me, and I've had lessons since I was a kid!

I know How to swim, but I can't do it for very long, due to how difficult it is.

I can barley make it the length of a home swimming pool, and I'm completely gassed.

God invented the California Diaper, just for me! 😁
I remember this from back when we took Tom and Ann to Catalina for the day. I had no idea until that afternoon.

What you need is one of those ski belts from the 60's. Perhaps you still have one. 😁 😁

Well at least we can argue about how the mechanical failure happened instead of if alcohol was involved or not…

There was also a twin OB 22 Daytona that had a steering failure and ran a shore not too long ago. I don’t remember if it was a line issue or a bolt/nut issue though.

The 22 cracked/broke a hard fitting (assuming you are talking the red one that ended up on the rocks/beach here awhile back)

You get in a salty ocean and you'll likely float.
My legs sink instantly so my floating usually lasts mere seconds. I have been in various seas that have a higher saline content and low/behold I can float.

Nope.

Even did Salton Sea when I was little. My mom couldn't understand why I didn't float! 🤣

When we were in Barbados, everyone else was floating in the warm water. I was content hanging on to my pool noodle. 😎

I have a hard time believing a nylock nut fell off unless it wasn’t tightened properly to begin with or some idiot replaced it with a regular nut.

That should never happen. Unless the load snapped the bolt instead, but you’ll never find either at this point.
The abuse we’ve put those bolts through racing offshore makes it hard to believe it would break and you think a loose one would be noticed when the boat was wiped down. I guess shit happens, thankfully nobody was hurt.

I don’t know if it was facebook or instagram, but I saw video of the toon rolling over in a slow turn. I don’t think there was any “leaning to high side “ going on. Was that video from Wilsonconstruction?

Am I the only one seeing a bolt on the swim step? How could it still be there if it came undone?

Wouldn’t the other ram combat some of the prop torque? I believe that boat has 2 RH and 1LH motors.
Now that I look again, it looks like the bolt, but then I go back to how does a nylock nut come off?

Something else I thought of was shouldn’t the three outboards all be tied via tie bars to the other side where there is a second steering ram? If that was the case the loss of the ram on one side should not have caused anything.

We are all guessing, and may never know the actual facts. The insurance reads about it on here and they might not be an honoured claim.

Not to mention 1 of the 3 motors “counter steers”. It just seem like if you removed that bolt it wouldn’t be an instantaneous right hand turn.

Same thing that happened to the 22 Daytona, if one ram fails why couldn’t the other ram hold both OBs straight via the tie bar, but it didn’t…

Obviously there are other forces at play with steering systems that meet the eye.

Just like the old argument, what happens when you lose one of the two engines on a cat at speed. Sometimes the boat goes straight and slows to a stop, sometimes the boat hooks and throws people out. It’s luck of the draw I suppose.

My eyebrows always go up on these scenarios. They never happen when you’re running hard alone in the winter.

It’s always a holiday weekend, crowded etc.

I’m not calling anyone out but a lot of these crashes require multiple systems to fail simultaneously. The whole point of a tie bar is to make sure the steering stays square and has steering pump redundancy.

You might have just said it. These are maybe people that show up for the big weekends, put the stuff away for the next big weekend. They service only when the hrs on the meter dictate it. In most cases that leaves a 100 hrs of use with a possible failing component.

Outboards are the worst for this because they just run. This type of big weekend boater may not have a mechanical aptitude to even look things over.

nylocks can and do come off. On my sandrail, when it was brand new build. 3 x’s the nylock nuts that hold my rack n pinion on came off. 3rd time added 2nd nut behind nylock nuts and they’ve held since.

The hallett 300 is an experienced boater. Not a newb. His wife is in hospital and will have a long recovery. Making judgement calls on a boat you’re not familiar with, evidence you don’t have, and assume the owner and investigators are not as smart as you. Da fuck lol

I hope she recovers quickly, and I feel terrible for everyone involved.

I just was pointing out there’s a wing plate bolt on the swim step and that these accidents always happen on big weekends. Even Noah himself could have forget to tighten up the ark.

It comes down to understanding how a bolt works and what it does and making it do that instead of using it as a pin.

GRASSPAYS?
No it’s the one Billy B painted. It’s all black on one side all red on the other. It’s a local boat to Mohave Valley I’ve seen them on the water 50 times, as well they live on the river as you’ll see on the dock. Main reason I assume mechanical failure is like i said i see him out all the time so not a rookie, thought it was M35 guess its a M31.

Glad no one was seriously hurt in any of the incidents. Good reminder to check those nuts and bolts boys! Sounds like rivermobster has a bunch of em in his pockets.
On my rzr all the major bolts are torque striped.

This Saturday I actually caught one of my rear cage bolts loose just by noticing one of the torque stripes out of place.

A comment was left on an IG video from a friend of this boat. (supposedly, I dont know if its true) He said something broke in a drive and it was stuck in forward, he couldnt get it out of gear. Sent it to the reeds to figure it out i guess. Later on he was able to get help and docked at Topock. Thats what I read and all I know

Nylocks...lets just say they are a false sense of security.

Fact, nylon dissolves over time in Salt Water. Its 302 and up stainless nuts and lock washers. We....scratch that...I've been told a wrist rocket can launch those at Sea Lions though if they continue to kill off your fishing spot. So if you have a bunch on board you can, um well return them to the store.

I am not buying it either, broken? 1/2" SS, I don't think so. Who worked on it last? Either they didn't put a nut on it or didn't tighten into the nylon, or maybe std nut or put it in upside down, nut on top.

I have beat the crap out of that kind of steering (ram to wingplate), open ocean for years never had one come loose. Broke a lot of other stuff (gearcases, midsections, powerhead bolts) never the steering.

Its just weird.......

Shit happens. Sometimes it’s a fastener that’s cosmetic and sometimes not. Had shit back off on a sxs and boat. Hope everyone is ok on the DCB and they’re back on the water soon.
If they want to sell it cheap let us know.

What if that’s the replacement bolt to go in?

Fair enough. Where’s the nut?

I don’t share hospital sending issues on social media. That’s just my speed.

It doesn’t matter one way or the other. I’m glad that everyone is relatively ok. Boats are easy (possible) to fix. Lives not so much.

I really hope that the occupants and owner are ok and walk it off.

You know looking at that pic the bolt / pin is on the swim step..

That is just bizarre? Who knows. I hope they all recover quickly and are back on the water soon.

Somebody missed one. I just don’t understand having multiple people get injured and then posting that photo.

My focus would be on the injured people not the boat. Posting a photo of the bolt in a sleeve is wierd. Just my opinion which is worth absolutely nothing lol.

Or it’s an old photo?

Boat is missing a section of windshield. Somebody smacked it. This was a rough ride into the water.
