I've worked on some of the older ones. They didn't appear bad or great, just a nice boat.

There a fancy bayliner.

Yeah? You have personal knowledge of this, correct?

It's always the same. A member relatively new to boating finds a clean, low hour boat with Merc power. Asks if anyone has advice...and without fail some schmuck says "Oh, that's a piece of shit", and they've never been close to one much less operating one.

Yeah, Brunswick built it. Big deal.

Maxums are good boats and they have a nice ride. They are a middle market unit, better than Tahoe and Bayliner but not as nice as a Chaparral or Cobalt.

Look up the NADA value. Take it for a test drive, ask for service records, have a reputable shop look it over (make the seller pay half). Check the condition of the trailer.

If it all checks out, buy it. It'll be a good boat for you.

maxum was part of the brunswick corporation till they stopped making them in 09. built by the same company that builds Bayliner, Tahoe, and sea ray to name a few. there are about 7 other brands in that stable. maxum imo wasn't too of the brunswick mark but it was maybe 2nd or 3rd. I was looking at then before I went the custom route along with chaparral and crown line. I don't think you will be disappointed as long as it checks out. it won't be a rocket ship but it will do anything you ask of it. it will be a great 1st boat. get it as cheap as you can though. they don't make them anymore.

I own a Maxum and they are solid boats with some nice features. The 21' with a 350 will probably run 55 wide open but will pull any skier, tuber, wakeboarder etc.

In my opinion that boat seems priced a bit high for what it is and the year. Some of the custom boats others have posted would be a better option in that price range.

Boats are only as good as the people or owners that work on them and keep them up. I worked on thousands of boats over my 36 years in the business. I've seen and worked on beautiful kept up Bayliners and I've seen and worked on piece of shit Schiadas and Howards. Many of you have the feeling that if it's not a custom boat it's a piece of shit, well I've got news for you, most people can't own a 100k boat for a first boat or 10th boat. I'd bet your first boat wasn't a Schiada was it. It takes time to figure out if the boating life is for you and your family and from there most of us have steadily climbed the ladder. As a matter of fact, I'm only on the middle rung.

I agree with all of this. They are nice family boat. This particular one has a bravo drive. 99% have an alpha for the price point. This is a nice upgrade. With all that work being recently done make it a pretty good deal. Nada is a general guide but not the whole story on price.

I owned one! A 175 and It delaminated. They fixed it twice before they replaced the hull. Worst boat I ever had. I had a Four Winns later and was a much better boat. i was told the smaller maxums were the same hulls as bayliner, I probably should of elaborated a bit more in my first post. Call me a schmuck all you want, all he asked was what people thought of them!

The reality is as long as the boat isn't a big P.O.S. upon inspection, and it gets him and his family out on the water enjoying their time together, who really gives a shit if it says Schiada or Bayliner on the side?:thumbsup

I bought my first boat because I thought it looked really cool:D Had I spent too much time on here searching for opinions I'd still be saving up for the beloved 200k boat:eek

Not a mfg out there that has not had delaminatin problems. Many times its too much wax in the resin or ? Years ago eliminator had to replae a whole bunch of boats. Ultra had the same problem and had t replace a inch of boats. Usually covered by the supplier of the resins product liability insurance. As it was with Ultra. Sounds like decent service if they tried to repair it and finally replaced it. Know of a few custom guys out there that would have been hard for them to do that.

True, I guess I just had a bad experience with them. I did own a Brunswick Baja 20 outlaw that was an awesome boat. I would buy a Maxum cruiser, just not 22 and under again.

Thanks fellas! Checked it out and it was by far the cleanest boat I've seen. Meticulously maintained with all records and original owner. Made a deal! Taking a lake test this week and if all goes well it's ours! Wife and kids loved it and for what we do its perfect.

Thanks again!

Good for you.

Finding a one owner boat that was well maintained and kept clean isn't easy.

The great thing about the boat is that all the work done last year is exactly the stuff that causes problems on a fourteen year old boat and costs a bunch to fix. The work done on the trailer is money you almost certainly would have spent. Same thing with outdrive bellows and shift cables.

I hope you and your family enjoy the ride.

A little late to the party, but just wanted to post that we owned a '96 Maxum 20SCL for 5 years as our first boat and it was a great boat with the 5.0.

We used to service it at Hipp Marine in Kearny Mesa. Sold it to a nice gentleman in Montana.

I had a friend that had a Maxum. It was a nice boat with a lot of great features (for the time period...mid 90's). I seemed well built. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one assuming everything checks out.
