Max 5 props

Who here has tried them? How would you pick a size/pitch? I run a stock bravo 30 4 blade at 6300 at 109. Right in the engine's peak power rpm. I want to try a Max 5, but I would like not to buy 2 props especially at the $2300 price tag.

I ran one on my 27 Lavey with about the same number your getting now. I would call and talk to bob Teague, tell him your set up. It got out of the hole a little better and had more tail lift, i liked it for my boat but stiff price tag.

You will want to go down in pitch. On my boat, it gave me more transom lift than I wanted, so went back to a 4 blade.

Got a 25p MAX 5 sitting in my garage in Havasu that you can try if you want or buy it.........only want $1K for it.

Remember that there's a Max5, and a Max5 ST (short tube). I run a 28 Max5 ST on my 23 Daytona, and it's my favorite prop all around.

I've run both standard and short tube, and prefer the ST as it has less stern lift.

I ran both, Max5 sucked on my rig, Max5 ST worked.

IMO the only way you would benefit is if you could surface the drive extremely high...like 2 plus inches C/L of propshaft above bottom of boat

Yeah my propshaft is 1” below the bottom of the outside sponsons. At optimum trim

that's pretty low,but if you can find a prop place like BBlades that has a rental program,might be worth trying..Is your current Bravo prop "labbed"?there is some performance to be gained there..

Teague has a bigger od version at 15.25 for sterndrives. He loves them, but he sells them to. IMO there is only so much slip you can get out of a boat. So if you run a high slip then yeah they could help you. My boat is at 9% so there isn't much to cut.

I have a stock B1 28 as well a Max5 ST 26p. If you’re up in the needles area ever your welcome to run my 28 to create a baseline than go run the 26 to compare. Mind you both are small for your boat and power but using the two same day could help decide if the Max5 is for you.

Bob Teague would be your best bet to talk to getting the prop set up correct the first try.

I have no testing experience back to back on a catamaran but I do on a Lavey Craft 29 NuEra with a Mercury 600 with an ITS and Bravo1 outdrive.
Bravo1 28p 5200rpm @ 79mph
Max5 15” 28p 5200rpm @ 84mph

The Max5 was by far a better prop in all aspects.

I assume we’re talking about the mercury maximus. I have prop tested that one along with the Hydromotive P5X and the cutting edge 5 blade from Augie along with of course the B1 on both my 29 lavey and my previous 28 powerquest both with very shallow propshaft dimensions. The Maximus is heavy AF and can eat your drive. It was slower for me as well. The hydro is to my the best qual prop thr is and while i settled on it in a 15/27 for the PQ the cutting edge in a 15.25/29 labbed won for the lavey. I can still blow it out rolling it over on plane if i throttle too hard but overall its a winner. B1 is of course faster on top end but the low speed cruise of the 5 er is paramount. Both boats are 650 hp.

I ran one when I had stock 496HO power in my Nordic heat. Ran a 24P bravo 4 blade, and a 23P max 5 15". Same RPMs, but max 5 had faster cruise and 2.5mph on top. Great prop on that boat. Now I have about 650hp and run a 5 blade max 5 copy at 28P and 15"

Have you looked at Hering? I have friends that swear by them. Pricy but legit

He will have good advice I'm sure, my tests where on a Sabre with a 800 Teague motor.

Was running a labbed 24 4 balde and switched to a Signature 23 5 blade on my Place craft with 496 HO. Found increase in MPH and faster plane. Overall, very happy

Was running a labbed B1 26 p before. Jr recommend the Max 5 28P ST 15in Teague recommend the 27P 15.25 . See where I go from here.

What did you end up using and how did you like it?

I just purchased a 29 Lavey with 600sci SCX upper and SC lower spinning a stock Bravo1 28p. Boat is very sluggish out of the hole and haven't had an opportunity to test out high-end range yet. Boat seems to have a lot of cavitation getting on plane but the current prop is nicked and dinged pretty bad so not sure if that's the issue or if it's incorrect sizing. Researching the max 5 prop looks like might be a suitable option for this boat.

Thank you for the information I've read a few other posts that talk about the MAX5 on the 29 with favorable results. Looking to find one to try before I drop the coin on a new one though but looks like it would be a good fit.

I’m also curious now as we just picked up a boat with twin 400s with 28 pitch bravo 4 blade. Wondering if the max 5 could me a good prop. It’s a little sluggish out the hull also.

Congratulations on the boat! I ended up with a 27p 15 1/4” Max 5. Planes very easy , mid range is very good. I don’t have quite enough HP to get max rpm out of my motor . But overall I’m very pleased.
Motor is a 500efi redone and basically a 600 now. Savage Marine did the all the work and estimate about 625hp or so.

Just running an XR drive, nothing fancy or built I don’t believe. I’m pretty easy on it out of the hole. The prop really makes it easy to jump on plain.

Glad to hear it worked out for you. Im still very happy with mine and have no buyers remorse. I do get just a bit of vibration when coming off plane but know several people that say thats prettty common with 5 blade props.

If running a Max 5 since it is labbed you do down 1 pitch. If you are running a non labbed 5 blade you to down 2 in pitch generally.

I run a 26 Hill Signature four blade, 25 Max 5 (my favorite), and a 24 Hill five blade.

I stayed with the same pitch (28) as the bravo 4 blade that was on the boat. Still made noticeable improvements in the hole shot

Some of that depends on the boat and weather you are propped correctly with the 30P. I bought the same pitch as a stock bravo on 2 different boats. Both got me about 100 rpms under the rev limit which was close to the stock bravos I had on before...Like any 5 blade, respect the drive, roll on the throttle respectfully and back off the throttle respectfully. I would assume some of the guys talking about the vibration coming off plane might be backing out of the throttle quick and reverse loading the prop which can't be good, but I could be wrong.
