I typically don't participate in such events but earlier today I went to the Can Am test ride event at Glamis.....here's my 2 cents on the R.
For comparison, 3 years ago I downsized out of full size car into a SxS because I was tired of having the only big car in the group and ended up with my current rig which is a fully built Turbo charged Yamaha that has just about every mod there is. It's pretty quick and handles very well. The new R still has the more leaned back driving position which I don't care for, the instrument cluster in front of the driver is blocked by the steering wheel and is way too small to read while bouncing around. The screen in the middle has different modes, but is again impossible to read at any sort of speed. The tachometer is almost useless, and lacks any color change as you near redline, As a result, I was constantly hitting the rev limiter.
The car is fast, more mid range than my Yamaha, very close in power in the upper ranges. In manual mode, the gearbox works well although I would prefer a sequential gear shift lever instead of the paddle shifters, but that's just me. In Auto mode, the gearbox fully sucks. It felt like a CVT that doesn't work right.....if you want an automatic CVT style car I wouldn't recommend the R. Suspension wise it's pretty damn good right out of the box, we were hustling along the sand hwy coming back from Comp at about 55-60 mph and it ate up the whoops quite well. It turns well, and has great mid range grunt in the smaller tight dunes. Overall, a very decent car ....I'm sure they can be dialed in to be even better.
I have to say the one MAJOR turn off from a safety standpoint is the location of the fuel tank, it's literally in the dash. The passengers feet are below he tank, it's basically in your lap. In the event of a front end collision, the gas tank location is downright scary.

Glad you got some time in a R. Was it a 2024 or 2025? The base shift strategy on a 25 is different than a 24 and the 25 runs 3 more sensors in the DCT for refined shifting in auto mode to help calm down some of the hunting the 24 tends to do in the sand. With EVO trans tuning and a touch more power on the 24 the car is down right stupid fast and the trans strategy works about 100x better. In auto mode you can also give the trans manual inputs and it will default back to auto if left alone for about 30 seconds, that's my preferred shift strategy on my R.

As far as the fuel tank, the X3 has the tank in the exact same location and the reason for it is to keep the fuel as far away from heat sources as possible. Several X3 have taken hard crashes on the front end and I have yet to see a fuel tank issue for them. I see your concern, but I still think overall keeping the fuel away from the engine isn't a bad plan.

My 2 seater I just sold and my 4 seat just showed up and I'm having prepped now. Should be on the sand with it tomorrow to start initial testing.

BTW, you can tell the difference between a 24 and 25 by looking at the suspension arms. 24's will be silver and 25 will be all black.

That's good to know about the auto mode, I figured the aftermarket would probably help in that department.
As far as the fuel tank goes, I'm sure it's fine in a typical single vehicle crash, it's the collision with other vehicles that really scares me.
I run a pre runner truck in the hard pack for this very reason, I figure a truck will win against a SxS in the event of a crash. There is just so much traffic out in the desert these days....

I'll give my ride review and thoughts after this weekend! I absolutely loved my 2 seat R and was more and more impressed with it the more I ran it. The tuning really did wake it up, but I will run the 4 seater stock for a while then continue to build on it with time.

I have seen a few head on's with the X3 over the years, and they haven't had an issue with the fuel tank, hopefully it stays that way!

I own Tooele Valley Motorsports, we are the largest Can-Am dealership in Utah. If you guys saw the Maverick R that was in the Supercat Fest auction that was a unit my team put together and I partnered with River Dave on to bring to the auction. I'm obviously Can-Am biased, but the R really is a special machine, the more time you put in one the more impressive it really is.

You can watch some of my initial R review on our YouTube as well if you want, just search Tooele Valley Motorsports.

Of course if any of you guys want pricing on anything we sell please just tell my team you know me from River Dave's Place and I will make sure they sharpen the pencil. I don't really want to make this thread a sales pitch, just an offer if any of you guys would like a price on anything I sell, typically we are very price aggressive to keep our volume up.

I sat in a 25' R 2 seater last weekend. The 4 seat R was not assembled. Damn it's long.
I'm not sure the 4 would be real good for havasu dirt.
Getting close for us, just sorta looking now

I had the JL 6 speaker originally in my 2 seater, its an ok system but I wasn't in love with it, but at the time it was all that was available. We have a great relationship with various audio vendors and do our own in house stereos sourcing our picks of components. My R Max just got a bunch of Kickers newest latest and greatest with integration on the factory 10.25" display. It absolutely rips, about 2-3x louder than my JL factory was in my 2 seat car.

I send several cars down into Havasu, most of the big build Defenders you see running around were most likely done by us, and I've got a handful of Mav R's running around as well!
