My friend used to own a Mattress factory. The markups are crazy. My current mattress retailed for $7800 and cost was $750. I would buy $2k-$3K mattresses at the end of the year for $450 each to cover his cost and sell them for $800 to people and they were super excited.

The mattress industry is bonkers and pretty scammy. There are nearly as many mattress stores, as Starbucks.

Fascinating Freakonomics podcast about it

I’ve had a pleasure of financing a couple manufacturers. Insanity the profit margins. I can only think of a couple industries that are higher.

Those retail stores having a 50% off sale are still making 100% gross margins. So you can only imagine now what the manufacturer is making.

We bought some 5k black beauty rest mattress this year and I hate it. It’s like sleeping on concrete.
You got the wrong stiffness . We have one and love it .

This!!!

Total scam on the higher end models.

I order a premium memory foam every 5-10 years. The last was $1200? When they get too out of shape, I throw them out.

My 2nd Job was at a high end furniture store. My first quality mattress set was $500 wholesale and they retailed at $3K. The 5k mattress was $1200 wholesale.

Currently my favorite one is a Stearns and Foster. Out of 5.

This thread is getting me thinking about opening up another Mattress business on the side again. Problem is alot of people want to come lay down on the mattress to try them out so there is alot of store front overhead to have a bunch of mattresses setup everywhere.

Buddy bought a nice mattress. Raved about how good it was. Insisted we check it out.
We ended up buying one. 15-year warranty, and if you make a claim and they replace it, the warranty starts over.
It's awesome. My sleep improvesd 10x. Best $4k I've ever spent.
Bought it about 17 years ago. Had it replaced 1x due to a small divit from were my fat ass sleeps all the time.
Denver Mattress, The Vail. Probably wouldn't do you any good though in Missouri.

My son bought a Purple.

I layed on it and thought, Damm, this thing is pretty comfy!

Ended up getting one. Zero complaints.

Ended up getting a knock off one at Costco, for my toy hauler. I'm Finally comfortable in there now. 👍🏼

We recently stayed in Tahoe for a week and they put us in their non publicized suite, both wife and I were amazed at how comfortable the bed and pillows were, she likes softer beds I like firm, we had a 5k+ top line temper-pedic at our last house and loved it but the bed they had was just blown away amazing. I checked and the Kluft mattress we were on costs over 35k, I can now see why some of the bigger buck beds sell for so much. Would I pay that much NO Way, would I pick that room again 100% of the time YES!

We also purchased a Sleep Number I 8, full split Cal King. I like the bed but hate the full split. I began slipping into the crack. We finally ordered the foam "T" to cover the split, and now it is fine. Just get deep pocket sheets, and the mechanics still work for either side.

God Damn, it must be winter here on RDP!

Hmm, In my younger years I might have contemplated going to Costco and grab a mattress and book a night to swap it???

I had a Lull memory foam for a number of years. Had some Sciatica issues and always noticed they lessened when we went away for vacation and I slept on the Sleep Number bed in my RV. When the Sciatica got really bad, I bit the bullet and bought a Sleep Number for the house. Within 6-8 weeks, the Sciatica pain was gone. I like that you can adjust the bed for you you want, and do that for each person if needed.

Sleep Number do sales on the big holidays, and "reintroduce" their SE - Special Edition beds. Usually this is about a 1/2 step up from one level towards the next, for less than the regular price. For me, I liked the P6 or the i6 bed, and ended up with the iSE special edition, which looks to be a standard now. With the standard base, the mattress protection pad and the remote (don't buy it - I've never used it - just use the phone app), it was about $4500 delivered. 3% financing for 3 yrs, runs less than $140/mo.

We got talked into buying a purple mattress. Tons of good reviews, feedback on here etc. I was super pissed about my purchase the first night, and even a few weeks into it. Was a ~5-6K$ mattress, and it just wasnt comfortable.

Im a year into it now, and we do sleep good on it but its not "comfortable". I cant even explain it, but I dont lay in bed and think oh man...this is it. BUT...I sleep great on it, im never sore when I wake up, etc so I guess it works??

If I could find a mattress that caused me to sleep comfortably from the time my head hits the pillow until the time the sun comes up, I'd trade my fucking house for it.

We bought a Brooklyn Bedding mattress for our RV on a recommendation. After going and laying on them the sales girl told us to order the next softest one that we had picked out. I think it is great, but my wife thinks it's little firm (she is about 125# where I am 220#) so I think that makes a difference. Paid about $550 for it. I want to order one for the house, but she isn't to sure.

Had a sleep number. Didn't care for it too much. Wife bought new mattress with bases for roughly $15K. Which I thought was abosoluty rediculous but we have been sleeping on it for 2 years now, and I have to say it is the most comfotable bed I have ever laid on.

Save yourself a ton of money. Bought this same one in a Queen for our "Granny Flat" when we had the house in Paso Robles. Everybody loved it. It was super comfortable also.

My wife has been looking for a new mattress.

What do you have?
Are the high end mattresses worth the money?

Neither of us are heavy. She’s 100 lbs and I’m 160.
Lots of choices for the $1,500 mark and then looks like a jump to $5,000.
No, if you saw the price a mattress store pays for a mattress vs what they sell it for, most people would lose their minds.

Well I told her to do whatever she wanted.

She went to two mattress stores in Springfield and to Costco.

She picked Costco

I’ll report back soon…..

This is most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on. They have them at the Inn at the Riverside in Grants Pass Oregon. We stay there when we visit the in laws.

At home we have Temperpedic $5K blob of hot rubber.

Need to replace soon.

We hated those also. There were dents in the mattress after six months. We are not large people. Their warranty says they can have dents up to 1 1/2 inches before they will replace it. That's about where ours were at. You could see the two dents with the comforter and blanket on. We sold it for $150 when we moved after sleeping on it for 4 years. The junk hauler wanted $200 to take it to the dump. I think that was a win.
