Mattresses. Is there a mattress worth $5,000?

My wife has been looking for a new mattress.

What do you have?
Are the high end mattresses worth the money?

Neither of us are heavy. She’s 100 lbs and I’m 160.
Lots of choices for the $1,500 mark and then looks like a jump to $5,000.

We have a sleep number bed. We spent about 9k for mattress and bases. There isn’t a better mattress in my opinion. You can adjust firmness or softness on your side or hers. I know it’s a big nut but worth it. They also have a 15 year warranty.

About 10 years ago, we bucked up and bought a sleep number dealio. About 8k back then.

Still today sleeps as good as the day we bought it.

Not many mattresses out there can do that. They seem like 3-5 years old, you start wondering why all the back pain.

We bought some 5k black beauty rest mattress this year and I hate it. It’s like sleeping on concrete.

Have a sleep number right now.

My sister ordered one for a second house but sold the house before she set it up So she gave it to us.

Did you go to a store and lay on mattresses or did you blindly order it on line?

Ordered it. Living in Parker there isn’t really a way to try them. We went on a recommendation. It’s the worst. I fucking hate it .

We had a queen black beauty rest. Firm.
$4200
God I loved that mattress. Threw it away after 15 years when I moved to AZ.
I cheaped out ($2300 or so) and got a firm Stearns and Foster in Havasu.
It’s “OK”, but nowhere near the mattress the simmons black was.

For me, unless one is buying a split adjustable like a sleep number, there is no better mattress than Simmons.
What size is your Simmons?
I might take it off your hands if I can run a black light over it first…😳

I guess it depends on what you want, I hate a firm mattress. Our old mattress from Costco was a lot more comfortable to me. I regret taking it to the dump and buying a new one.

We got the Beautyrest black Christabel in a cal king size from www.sleepcity.com and it’s the most comfortable thing we’ve ever slept on. Definitely worth the $3,500 we paid for it.

FYI, this was in late 2018 and still love it to this day.

Unfortunately, laying on a mattress in a store for 5 minutes is completely pointless.

Buy a mattress from a store that allows for an exchange in 30 days if you don't like it. Then you actually get to try it out the only way it can be.

I also bought one of those online mattresses, Dream Cloud I believe. It was rock hard after the shipping and I didn't keep it long enough to find out if it got better. Got my money back and they had me give it away to a friend who had to sign a form that they received it. Friend loved it. I went back to in person mattress shopping.

It's not pointless at all, it would have allowed him to know that that particular mattress was firmer than he would have liked and he would have been able to find one that could have fit the bill.

We have the 13” with all Talalay latex layers. I liked the adjustability of the sleep number but didn’t want noise or the ability to break. Latex is healthy and you have the ability to customize and re customize the layers and each person changes shape. “Weight” It also lasts a very long time. I LOVE this bed

I highly doubt it.

I was in sleep number for 1-2 hours with my wife. I think sleep number did offer the 30 day money back. Maybe even 60 I don’t remember.

So laying on a mattress in a store that has had everyone else lay on it, and essentially broken in, is gonna be the same as a fresh out of the bag mattress? Its not.

You have to know what you have now, and go in a store knowing you want to go softer or firmer and then have the sales guy make a recommendation (or do your own research).

People picking mattresses on the sole basis of 5 minutes on one are going to always wind up unhappy.

We got a purple mattress and really like it. Have a sleep number in the Motorhome and it’s pretty nice as well, but definitely sleep better at home.

Ok, you're right🙄. They get swapped out pretty regularly but they are definitely not broken in like you are thinking. If you go to a good store and have a good salesman they can pair you with the right mattress. I worked for many years at a good store with great salesman and we rarely had a mattress returned.

If you like to have sex on your bed, don’t get a split mattress - one of your knees will always seem to find the split or your foot will get stuck in the abyss. Maybe make one of your other rooms the sex room if you get a split mattress.

Mattresses rate right up there with used cars and solar salesman. It's another big ticket item that people buy once in a great while.

We sleep on a foam mattress we bought online for around $1,000. It replaces one we bought seven or eight years ago the same way. They just wear out. I sleep with no pillow and it's just okay for me, a little on the firm side.

Before that we had a sleep number and both hated it.

In our guest bedroom we have a queen mattress from Costco with a foam topper we added on that also came from Costco. that bed is heaven to me but my wife doesn't like it.

The foam mattresses seem temperature sensitive, that is they are softer in the summer and firmer on a cold night.

We bought the Mac daddy Beauty Rest black 16 months ago. We laid on what felt like 100, and kept coming back to it.

1- I bought one step firmer than what felt good in store, assuming it would break in a bit and softer. It never has. That’s on me for trying to out think the sales guy that told me it wouldn’t soften.

2- thanks for the reminder, I need to call them as that POS has a hole on my side that kills my back despite rotating it multiple times.

Never again! I’ll buy $1k delivered in box mattress’s from here on and throw them away every year. My back pain and sleep is worth the cost!

At first I loved our sleep number, 8 years or so in i think, I hate it and I've disliked it for at least 2. We're gonna throw a foam topper on it like we have in the trailer and see if that helps. Maybe I'm just getting older, but I know if i sleep on it my pinched nerve gets worse.

I prefer a medium to medium/firm and this mattress has been great. My wife and I tried it in the store and liked it over all the others. 6 months later and we still love it. It feels more like a ‘normal’ mattress than the high end memory foam Tempurpedics. I cant stand the feel of memory foam changing shape and hugging my body. It’s the first higher end mattress I’ve purchased, and my back thanks me.

The Casper Select that Costco carries is very comfortable as well and a lot more affordable. It’s just a little softer than I prefer.

Split is fine as long as the top layer is not split. Other layers below can be different with no issues.

10 years ago We tried several higher end mattresses including sleep number(hated it), The last one was like $3500 back then. Returned them all. Had a shop custom make one where you choose all the layers and pillow tops, I have poor circulation and the pillow top was a little firm so they just exchanged the top that is removable by zipper. It was $2600, probably 50% more by now, but the only way to go.

We bought a Casper bed from Costco 3 years ago. My thoughts were if we don't like it, Costco will take it back. Spent $400 for a queen and still love it today.

We bought a Casper online a couple of years ago and love it, I doubt I'll ever go back to an innerspring mattress. Seems like they all are done after about 5 or 6 years, and I understand we spend 1/3 of our live sleeping in bed, but 7-10k for a mattress doesn't pencil out for me.

Go on Amazon and buy a good 2-3" memory foam topper, about $150 for Cal King.

We have a tempurpedic breeze or something like that. It was 7k I think but vibrates and goes up and down and what not. We got it about 12 years ago and it’s still pretty good. Had a 20 year warranty which I laughed at at the time but I think it’s going to make it past 20

I made the same mistake, I got the firm and don’t have a platform bed, so they sold me the 2 box springs for additional $500. There is a large lump in the middle where the box springs meet. Getting to the other side for a piece of ass is a chore In itself. They came out and replaced it after a couple weeks and the same shit. They said I need a platform bed to get rid of the lump. I gave up and wake up with a sore back everyday.

You're gonna laugh but I bought an Ikea memory foam type mattress for like $500, along with a cheap but modern looking bedroom setup 2 years ago as a temporary solution when I moved in to new house in TX. It was supposed to go into the guest suite soon after...

I'm still sleeping on it and it's great, didn't have a reason yet to redo the master bedroom setup at all lol!
