Let’s be fair anyone of means will pull that card. Even when they serve it’s extremely rare they see combat that truly puts them in harms way.

Not to say it doesn’t happen but it’s more the exception than the rule

I actually went to join the military when I was 18. I ended up going down a different path as an apprentice machining program.

I would have had zero problem serving though, and I was saying two year minimum in the service since I was younger than you. I believe everyone should contribute something to their country.

By the way I didn’t serve, but I would say the weapons programs i prototyped and in some cases helped developed probably did more for national security than anytime I would have spent in the actual military. I feel like I did my part.

Wait…you say you helped develop weapons for the military? Prototypes made of weapons? Who designed them and what type of weapons?

Or do you mean that you made some parts based on a contract you or your Dad had to make some specific parts? I think your Dad was an engineer or along those lines, correct?

If you developed and made weapons for the military I am impressed.

Here’s my take: our manning is not in a position where this would be necessary. Having a conscripted force that has to do mandatory service would be nothing more than bullet magnets on a battlefield. They would not get any specialized training due to the sheer cost of training said individuals. Simple arms training would be about it. I also wouldn’t want to work with someone who doesn’t want to be there and would bitch the entire time. Unless we are in dire straights and are unable to gain the volunteers to continue whatever fight we are in, then I’d be more apt to accept a minimum.

Kind of pointless to debate, really. It will never happen in this country. We have enough issues with our all volunteer force as it is these days. Liberal “equality” policies creeping in further, etc. Forcing young men and/or women into service may or may not make better Americans out of them, but it would most definitely weaken the force overall. It’s a hard enough job to develop and lead the ones who volunteered. Voluntold??? No thanks!

I would agree that the USA needs a Mandatory National Service be it in the military, Peace Corps, or other public, you could allow participants to develop real-life skills in their areas of interest. Between 18 to 21 year old would need to complete 2 years working for the USA. You could help facilitate participants’ career goals as much as possible, allow participants to develop real-life skills in their areas of interest.

Note: US Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY) made five unsuccessful attempts to pass the Universal National Service Act, which would have required all people in the United States between ages 18 and 42 to either serve in the military or perform civilian service related to national defense
