24" water line cap blew off once and took of the top of the head of a pipefitter.
The guy was still alive when we found him.
Lived for several days.
It was brutal.

Man that was brutal!I work in aerospace and we have all kinds of nasty lathes mills ect.One thing that we stress is dont get complacent around any kind of machinery.Years ago I worked in maintenance at a chemical company and one of our electricians was doing some work on a fan motor on top of a cooling tower. All the equipment was locked and tagged out per procedure. When he was done with his repair he went down and told the operator he was done so they could pull the locks and tags to get the thing up and running, but realized he had left a tool behind. He figured he had time to go get his 10$ screwdriver before they fired it back up.Well he was under the fan (12 foot diameter coupled to an 80 horse shaft driven electric motor that goes zero to full tilt in 4seconds)when they turned it back on.Sucked him head first into the fan, wasnt pretty.Didnt find him till end of his shift when he didnt come back to the shop.Machines dont think, operators do.Well some of them.

Seriously, whoes job is it to clean that up? I like the idea of placing the picture above the machine.

Most likely a third party that generally cleans crime scenes as they'd be the only one used to seeing that stuff.....and you really never get used to seeing it.

That would suck if they made his coworkers clean him up.

went on a call of an industrial accident a few years back at a paper mill. Guy climbs half way in a jammed press to dislodge item. He sure did.....popped his work boots right off. :skull

Well that isn't gonna heal up.

Pretty gruesome, on par with the grizzly bear attack I posted up once you promptly took down.

Was it disclaimered like that?

The only reason I bumped it, is I just saw a ton of exra people land on RDP for this time of day, so I went to current users and looked to see what the hell they were all looking at.. It was this.

As serious as it gets right there...at least he felt hardly anything it would have happened so fast....

When people talk about no loose fitting clothing, no jewelry etc...this is the outcome they are trying to avoid. :yikes

I long time ago I had a ring short circuit and fuse to my finger...I took notice and never ever wear shit like that again when I am working.

So I have mostly forgotten what is on Page 1 of this thread. After seeing this thread title, I can somewhat remember it. The question is, do I click First page again? or go on my way?

I wouldn't have even posted this, but it's relevant to what alot of people do for a living on the board..

No No... No it's not. :D

I'm not against porn guys.. Hell I'm a member of a couple of great pay sites "Brazzers, Milfhunter" and of course the implied "bonus sites" that go along with those Big Naturals, JugFockers, etc.. etc..

The amount of porn that's stored in the temp files of my computer would astound even the biggest pervert, or possibly local district attorney..

Those sites make big dough though, and have big lawyers, with all sorts of legal implications etc.. etc..

If people start throwing porn up here, then somehow someway I have to prove every girl was over 18, and deal with all that bullshit.. It's not worth my time, and if some overzealous prick decides to sue for some reason that I can't even think of, well needless to say that's going to screw my personal life which isn't acceptable.

Aside from all that I'd like to keep this place family friendly etc.. I realize this thread doesn't fit that MO 100%, but there's so many machinists fabricators on this board it was kinda fitting to the group..

If it turns out that it's above and beyond, then I'll moderate myself and remove the pictures..

RD

I should've moderated myself back in the day.. LOL

I'd click out and move to another thread if you aren't a machinist.. It's pretty f'n rough.

Gotta be a pretty sizeable machining board.. They just popped about an extra 900 people on RDP and we just broke our site record a second ago for most online. (now 2090 something)

This time of day on a monday it should be 900-1100 going into winter. In winter the #'s will climb again when Offroading starts etc..

When you make a disclaimer like you did, curiosity kicks in and says, "it can't be that bad, I've seen blood and guts movies that they used to show in driver's ed classes and traffic school". But Ho Ree Fuk! That's some nasty shit! I'm can't look at it long enough to really figure out what is where - I found the arm, and what looks like what's left of a head, but that's all I can take to try to figure out how the chain of event caused this. :puke:

So who cleans uo somthing like that?

Coroner.. the machine itself the machine shop would hose it off with coolant etc and pump the tank if I had to guess.

It's not the machines fault.. just a reminder that if you fuck around and don't pay attention these things are pretty unforgiving. It's to this day an "old world" trade.. meaning your fingers and life are in your own hands.

These sorts of situations have always confused me, if the force is strong enough to do that, how did it not just rip the clothing off of him?

Dave, next time I see you, remind me to tell you about the suicide case we had where a guy cut off his own head with a mitre saw. Gnarly.

That is exactly the point.

You would be surprised at what it takes to actually rip a workman's piece of clothing off the body. Much more force than ripping your wife's panties/summer dress off lol.

Even a tiny chain of some sort is extremely strong when force is exerted along the linear chains.\

Even a tee-shirt could drag you into the lathe...then it's steel vs flesh and bone...bad ending.

Well it's a couple of things.. You are standing there leaning over a machine, it doesn't take that much force to "suck" you in.. Imagine someone leaning over something and you just walk behind them and give them a little "nudge." By the time the clothing gets wound up in anything it's over.. It won't tear or rip like you'd think linearly like that.

Imagine a rag or a towel and "ringing" the water out of it by twisting.. You can twist that shit as hard as you want and it isn't going to rip.. hell it won't even stretch the fabric etc.. Kind of the same thing.

I am just glad I was looking at it on my phone. Pictures to small to see the details and upon seeing how graphic it was I swiped fast. I assume he didn't survive

One of the Framers I used to sub work to used a beam saw to his own throat. RIP Efren.

Put it this way... They didn't have an open casket funeral for this guy.

Many of the old time machinists I've met over the years always have some missing finger parts. It was a dangerous occupation before automation came about.

I've been a woodworker for many years and have had more close calls than I'd like. Been lucky and still have all body parts intact. High speed machines have high speed accidents that can kill.

Proper use includes where you place your body and not having clothing/jewelry/long hair that can get tangled up quickly. Simple things.

My dad was a meat cutter and had a helper get his tie caught in a meat grinder when he leaned over the feed reaching for something. The auger pulled the tie in and the kid's neck was pulled tight against the meat tray on top of the grinder. My dad hi the off and quickly cut the tie before the kid choked to death.

We had a kid in HS get his class ring stuck in the net on a basketball goal hanging him from the net and peeling the meat back on hos finger as the ring sliced in.

While skiing one night, a young girl with a waist length pony tail was going up a rope tow lift. Her hair somehow manage to get wrapped in/around the rope and being short she was lifted and passe over the safety cord that shut down the lift. The skier behind her hit that cord just as she was about to enter into the top sheave the rope passed over.

All these are things I've encountered where loose clothing, hair, and jewelry got people hurt and nearly killed......It's a dangerous world.

Years ago in IAH a Continental Airline mechanic got sucked thru a 737 engine, they pulled the engine and buried it....
