... Disabled plates for commercial vehicle registration will save you a ton in Ca...Not suggesting that you break your neck like I did:yikes... But a letter from a doctor to some sort of disability does the trick... My Dodge ram diesel is cheap cheap cheap...

I always wondered about the auto insurance policy and those taxi services. I can only imagine the insurance cost increase once the insurance company finds out you are using your vehicle as a taxi service.

One of the guys in my van pool drives for Uber and he said he has put about 25K miles on his car in about 8 months.

In CA they got this ruling. From what I am hearing Uber and Lyft drivers are going to have issues with car insurance soon. Most personal car insurance excludes commercial usage and pressure is being applied by insurance companies that Uber and Lyft need to provide driver data to insurance companies. This will cause a huge issue for both companies; they both are fighting not to provide that data.

get a disabled plate and no weight fees/
Hmmm.... I'm gonna be in the market for a new-to-me truck hopefully within the next few months and I have some pretty fucked up knees and ankles and was diagnosed with "lose joint syndrome" when I was in High School. Might have to look into that.

Definitely wouldn't use the handicapped parking though as that's just not right.

Tonneau covers won't get you out of the tax. Only a camper shell will. It takes it from a commercial vehicle to a passenger vehicle. The lady at the dmv argued with me for an hour over it. She said tonneau covers are removable. Hmm. So are camper shells.

Well, I hate to admit I was wrong. I checked my registration fees and there is a weight fee of $154 on my registration. So, looks like they have me listed as commercial for this truck. I looked at my last truck registration and there were no weight fees attached. I only had a tonneau cover on that truck as well.

FWIW

I had a one ton back in my Cali days, registered as passenger. Did the camper shell thing but also did the carpet kit, if anyone remembers those (benches on either side). I think I paid $125 for the registration I now pay $65 in TX [emoji51].

I believe the ruling is you cannot haul anything in the bed that is not part of the vehicle, I.E spare tire, broken shit, etc

This isn't new, my father got cited for hauling stuff in a 64 El Camino in 1968. He went to commercial plates.

that's the road im looking at. The cops wont be running my plates. I have a shell, no idea whats under it. But I never really carry anything anyways. Ice chest, few havasu items like skateboards and clothes. Sometime a dog! If I did get pulled over the argument will be all this stuff fits in my wifes car, no difference. Now if your recurrent buzzed driver I don't recommend this, another reason to be pulled over. that's the other thread though:grumble:

My truck can carry more people comfortably than a honda, yet it's not a passenger vehicle.

Bought a small Dodge truck with a camper shell a few years back, got tired of the shell and lack of visibility and pulled it off , pulling out of a driveway in Arroyo Grande I get redlighted, next I know the Lady Cop is yelling at me to "keep my hands in plain sight" (was looking for my wallet) She already had he sidearm out and was calling for backup.... What was the deal ... a pickup truck with a passenger car plate, she reacted I suppose thinking it was stolen before she matched the non commercial plate with the description , got a citation to reregister the truck ..... as a truck

We too changed the registration on our Chevy 2500 HD years ago since it has a permanent Snug Top shell. In a sense, it's no different from our Suburban or Excursion that we owned. I'm trying to figure out why we didn't do it earlier or with our other trucks that had camper shells LOL...
