Im not speculating.....nobody knows what is going on with this motor's glitter issue, via an RD Lounge post without pics 😂

But for shits and giggles - say the glitter is from a rod bearing going away,....well, that is often caused by detonation!

Im simply saying that running it 11:1 on pump gas up large sand dunes WOT, is putting it in the detonation danger zone.
Especially when alot of the older engine management EFI's used on rails don't utilize knock sensors.....

Stock 10:1 motors usually see 2-3 degrees of knock retard with the factory tune
I personally wouldn't do an 11:1 LS motor in a sandrail that sees repetitive duning action, on 91 octane. Same reason why I wouldn't do it in a marine application.
Running to the point of detonation will cause lots more than a rod bearing going away….being an LS, the pickup I-ring is probably shorty, sucking air, and made everything go to shit in a hurry.

Pull it apart, wash all the crap out…probably get away with sliding new bearings and changing an o-ring.

But…ya don’t know until you tear it down….I’ve gambled and won, I’ve gambled and lost. I’ve mostly done won on internet diagnosis engines where nobody bothered to pull a valve cover before condemning the engine. I’ve mostly lost when the did.

I agree, I've usually been able to fix stuff others walk away from. But it's not everyones bag

Started pulling it apart this afternoon. Looks like it tossed a couple of rocker bearings. Thinking it will be best to tear it down all the way for a good inspection. I reached out to JMS, I may go ahead and let them handle it.

Rocker trunion bearings usually won’t kill the motor, and if you’ve lost oil pressure it’s got something else going on for sure.

Yeah, I'm sure I either lost cam bearings, or crank bearings. I suspect the rocker bearings failed due to lack of oil in the heads... I did start it up to put it back in the trailer.

The ejecting of the needle bearings in LS rockers happens. It probably is not due to oil starvation. High revs and high load, they just spit out a bearing or 2 sometimes.

When you put it back together get upgraded trunions. They just press into the stock rockers.

It had the upgraded BTR trunnions... I will definitely be going down the rabbit hole on the LS engines. I know enough to get myself into trouble. Always been into this stuff, but never really built my own. I built the crap out of a turbo VW engine a while back, but the more I read about the LS, the more I learn. Not that it's complicated, just reading about the few tricks here and there.
My wife wants me to build the shit out of this engine and throw twin turbos on it... I guess I should plan on going that route. LOL!

Oh wow. That is interesting then. I know BTR revised theirs and there were a couple failures from the first version.

You’ve got a great base to go nuts with turbos :)

Yes, yes you should. Almost everything should have turbos!!!! 😉

or a supercharger

I'll have to do some plumbing, but I have these old Turbonetics turbos that are looking for a home.

UPDATE:

Got my engine back from JMS. 4 weeks turned into 6, so I'm not in a rush to try and get a trip in this season.

Here's what we know:
oil pressure relief valve was stuck open causing the loss in oil pressure.
rocker arm bearing failed.
Everything else in the engine looked good.

Here's what I decided:
FUCK IT, LETS BUILD IT!
bored to .030" over
forged pistons
gapped rings for boost
American Custom Cams ground a cam for boost
Eagle H-beam chrome alloy connecting rods
ported the exhaust side of the heads (Mike says the intake of the 799 heads flow pretty good so left the intake side alone)
new LS7 lifters
new rocker assemblies
new pushrods
basically replaced everything but the crank and block

Went with bushing style rocker bearing this go around

IMG_5998.JPG

Ditched the single disk clutch for a new double disk setup

IMG_5860.JPG

Rebuild the turbos

New CBR radiator. Changed over to AN fittings. Time to fab the cold side and plumb the oil lines to the snails.

Is there any harm in throwing some Torco octane booster into pump gas as "protection". I have a 415 cu in LS3 and run 91 straight from the pump. Have done so for almost 6 years now. Have never considered running octane booster even though others in my group do with their supercharged cars. Engine built with 10.8:1 compression. Builder said he would run Torco if I boosted it, but wasn't worried about using octane booster with the NA setup. Just curious if there is any harm running the Torco if its not "necessary".

If it's not needed for the C/R, there is absolutely no point in using it.

If you've gotten by for 6 years, you've already battle tested it on 91 lol. It wouldn't hurt, but probably not needed. Since its a 413, its most likely got forged pistons which adds a big safety margin against the occasional detonation event. The stock cast pistons are another story...

Well, going the easy route didn't pan out for me...
I put the ICT timing set cove with welded -10 fitting on thinking that it would be an easy turbo drain solution. Turns out, one of them will not work without rearranging my accessories. So, out came the engine again so I could drop the pan and weld fittings for the drain lines. Been crazy busy with work, but finally got a little time to get that done and stuff the engine back in place.
