Might be able to do some at Puddingstone with my outboard, need to drain old fuel, maybe an impeller and go test one day.

I will be running around offshore on select weather days. Do you prefer Ocean training or doing a couple river runs. I will be out in Parker 3 to 4 times in May & June.

you know there was a race in Nor Cal last weekend that would have been the best WATER TIME you could get AND WE NEED PEOPLE TO KEEP THESE RACES AROUND people like yourself have races to go to ! If we keep getting low numbers at ski races there just wont be any to attend at all and that is inclusive of the greatest race in the world the CATALINA SKI RACE !! There is another race scheduled for Pittsburg on June 8-9 and I really need to know that we will have people to attend that race or it could be canceled. Please put the word out for everyone to come and let me know asap that your coming so we as the NWSRA board can make the call. Remember if you like ski racing and I am sure you do then we need you at EVERY RACE in order to keep this great sport alive !!.......................Most of the guys that travel to the river instead of coming to the races up north spend more on beer than it would take to drive up and race. It is always easy to make the excuse to not race but let me tell you one thing and that is if we all don't make the effort you wont have to worry about making one because their will not be a race to go to..................That is my two cents and its coming from someone that has made 99 % of all the races for 45 straight years as a racer and for 51 straight years as a spectator...............I am very frustrated right now with this lack of desire to keep this sport alive !!

Some of my closest friends/racers are NorCal folk so please, keep that in mind and easy on the flack. That said, back to the basics: These days the majority of the participants in our sport are from the SoCal area. Sound business principles dictate success lies in selling a product that is close to the people who will buy it. I know race water down south is expensive and difficult to get and like traveling north, it's rarely just a 2 day weekend proposal for the pocket book. However with more attending, the growth potential is a sound ROI. In closing, most of us know your leadership is trying very hard and the challenge is huge. Thanks for caring Mike.

Mike,

I knew there was a race in Nor-Cal that weekend and I know you work hard on keeping the sport alive! I respect that! I want the sport to stay alive but due to this wonderful economy, $20,000.00 in pay cuts over the last few years, wife having to work in Vegas for her job, paying 2 rents, 2 electric, 2 gas and 2 water bills makes things a little tuff. So before you "RANT" on someone's thread you may want to find out the situation. When I started ski racing I attended EVERY Nor-Cal race but due to situations and other priorities this has changed. It takes allot for me to even attend the southern cal races and saving up to do Catalina. that's why I made this post, I have not skiied Cataina in several years due to the above mentioned and looking for local help made sense. Maybe the NWSRA board should focus on getting the average joe's into the sport rather the focusing on the "BIG DOGS" I don't mean any disrespect by that comment cause I wish I were one them! I know with the grass roots that is a step in the right direction and the NWSRA is trying! I think the NWSRA needs to think "out of the box"! Things I get but don't, why the stock boat class is in the women's marthon? I see it as most of the people who want to get into ski racing would own a stock boat. Just my 2 cents, if I was a newbie I wouldn't want to run my stock boat in a 40 plus minute race in usual ski race conditions, seems like a deturant to me. Sure you have the grass roots but where do they go after that? Why are JR. boy's and Girl's in the mini? Being that these are classes that get to attaend the world's shouldn't they be in the men's and womens' classes seeing that at world's they have to ski for 60 minutes? Just asking the questions although I already know the answer. I love the sport and respect the the people that work to keep it going and wish I had more time to be able to be on the board but don't. So maybe before ranting on someone's thread you should ask the questions.... Just my 2 cents and i will try to attend the national meeting and we can discuss in person.

With all my respect!

What I was doing was not ranting as you both have said I am merely stating a fact. I wasn't pointing a finger at you or trying to attack anyone. I am stating a FACT ! there was a race up north and there are plenty of people that could have made it and just didn't want to make the effort and what I am trying to get through to all of you is if we only choose to go to the races we like what will happen is those races and the rest of them will cease to be their. The statement you make of the NWSRA focusing on the BIG DOGS is just plain BULLSHIT !! If it were not for those BIG DOGS as you say the sport would have been gone years ago ! ..........Over the years we have donated to ski racing to keep the sport going to the tune of 100's of thousands of dollars......................with out sponsorship from guys like myself,Randy, Howard,Scott etc the NWSRA would have been out of money and no racing would be going on at all.............. ..Furthermore we have tried to get the new guys in for the last 5 years as a priority, we have tried plenty of things that still seem not to work because the talkers say what they want and then we make a change only to find out it is just that ,TALK and they don't show. As far as the JRs go there is a place for them to race in both the woman's as well as the Mini we just do not have any kids that want to right now. The stock boat was done that way so you can run in EVERY RACE not just the woman's. We have a format right now that gives every type of skier and or team a few races that they can enter and of shorter and longer distances. The people of the NWSRA board have and will continue to do what is in the best interest of our sport period, and I am sure I speak for all the great people that work so hard on the Catalina ski race as well .................It is just very frustration for me and others that try so hard to keep it going and then we have weekends where people do not show and we loose a ton of money. Also you should know the Grass roots people that we really want and try to give them all they need cost the NWSRA money as well...............Just thought you should know the facts before you have your RANT .....................We need people like you and all other to race all you can and go to as many races as possible or the races will just go away from lack of funds............

Well i can tell you why I decided to stop going to the races. After being out of ski racing for about 8 years I signed up my two daughters for the grass roots. I paid the regular nwsra and awas memberships beacuse I thougt it was a good cause. The flyer said the the grassroots would ski on saturday and sunday. At the sunday drivers meeting when dusty said the grass root skiers had there chance on saturday and it was a waste of time to have them ski on sunday I was like wtf. I knew that this was the same bullshit that made me leave the first time. It is a new song but the same dance.

How are the castaic and other local lake races coming along? I know the goal is to get more racers involved in the already scheduled events, but it appears that it is easier to get the Southern California people to show when it's a less than 6 hour drive to the race.

I realize that statement is completely unfair to the NorCal guys who make Parker and Havasu. But it's hard to fight what people wanna do. I don't see guys who are thinking of racing their boats who boat in Havasu/Parker/ etc towing to NorCal until they have been racing in their own backyard for a few races.

I did grass roots last year and I skied novice and double up in Parker this year. I didn't ski havasu due to being sick but plan on sticking with the sport. So for me personally grass roots worked.

I also, and more importantly had a great team with Jim/Kyle Lancon and Dennis Frisch helping me with skiing. As well as mondorally (Justin) getting me into the sport.

I think that's also key, having guys that are all about getting you to race. And I know all of you are!!!! But it goes beyond race weekends, you have to keep people jazzed about racing in between racing. Getting them to practice and what not... Something I don't do enough. But something all the guys I listed above keep leaning on me to do. Not only to show up to race but what to do in the "off season" to get better

Hallet21,

Very well said! Fully agree and i have worked at doing that and had some skiers lined up at Parker this year but my boat broke and was unable to get it going. I think one of the best things I saw for the sport since I have been in it was the ski reunion at Long Beach Marine Stadium last year. I know they are doing it again this year and have contacted Andy offering my help in what ever I can. I think if the NWSRA really takes that event, does some promotion on it and get as many non racers to attend and get them on the water it can even be better. I am planning on brining my boat home for that event and would love to pull some people that haven't raced in race. I think beyond the fun races they had last year maybe some "grass roots type" races for people that haven't raced. I don't know the logistics of all that but just my opinion. Stick with it, there is allot of good people and it is a great family sport!

Steve,

Those are things I am exactly talking about! This year at Parker when they announced on the web site they were only going to run the mini one day "I was not going to ski" if it wasn't for a personal friend helping out with some things I ended up going to ski. Was "VERY" happy they ended up running it both days. Here's the thing I don't get, the mini, consistantly has the most boats in it so why would the NWSRA "EVEN" consider going back to running it only one day, is that not income for them? Don't know maybe I am missing something. When you hear things like what you said in your post above being said by an NWSRA board member that leaves a sour taste in the mouth and hear what you are saying! Hopefully you will stay in the sport with your kids, you are always welcome in our ski race camp!

I dont know what race you are talking about but we had two grass roots races at Parker and at Havasu Sunday there were no grass roots signed up ! As I said before we will continue to try and give ALL competitors a chance to race at least two times a weekend and I know for sure that has been the case this year.

It was parker two years ago.

I will tell you that right now you are holding the proverbial "Batphone..." The red one that goes directly to the mayor, and doesn't have to go thru his attractive Secretary...

Mr Warpath has been HMFIC for the NWSRA less than 1year, abd is really trying to make the sport more attractive to newcomers. I'm sure not going to speak for him, but the BS that happened 2 years ago at Parker isn't how he does things...

I am sure you are right mike is a great ambassador for the sport and there should be more people like him. IMHO there are some that might have good intensions for the sport but because of there egos drive people away. Ski racing should be one of the best family sports. There are not many sports where different generations can compete together.
