Looking for some guidance from the inmates.

My neighbor is 89 years old and has been widowed for about 10 years now. She still drives, cooks, walks the neighborhood at times and is in general good health minus some memory issues at times. During the last heavy storms we had she got a couple of small roof leaks that were temporarily bandaged up due to it being 23 years old. Unpronounced to me she had a roofing company stop by last week to give her an estimate for recover or a tear-off/new roof. When the sales guy went over the numbers with her she invited me in her house to listen in. Well after a 90 minute sales pitch I asked him to get to the point being cost. After all the BS discounts he proposed it came down to $26k for recover and $38k for tear-off/new....she almost fell out of her chair. Now she's on a fixed income and cannot afford a recover much less a tear off. I want to help her out with this cost which is about $4k for materials (16 squares) of shingles/underlayment delivered/loaded. I'll provide the labor but thinking about setting up a gofundme to help cover the material cost. I've never done anything like gofundme so need some advice from those that have been down this road before. What's the best way to approach this goal in helping her out?

BTW, that $4k quote was from South Coast Shingle in LB so if anyone knows a better place as far as pricing I'm open to it.

But they showed up looking like a roofer more than the 6 other quotes I got. For underlayment replacement and relay existing tiles and replace broken ones just under 10 squares.

It’s the phrase for CA. It’s the cost of doing business in the state.

They are very much aware. Oldest daughter (69) is on board as her caregiver and her son (67) recently found out he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer with 4-6 months to live....shity situation as you should never have bury your child...she lost their youngest daughter in 1995...she's a really good caring person that I consider family.

@NicPaus can hit the cost on the money. I think you have 10k in material and then whatever in labor. Assuming it needs to be re sheeted.


I did our 1100 sq ft house for $7500 in 2018. That included new plywood, shingles and almost free labor lol.

I don't really know my neighbors but for friends or family I'm always the 1st to volunteer on any project. I'll donate my time, the few skills I have and hard work and even money when needed to help. It's just the way it is and always will be. Luckily I have good friends and family that don't take advantage and will do the same for me if needed.

Figure around $275 a square for shingles, felt paper, flashings and drip edge. Plus labor. Wood replacement and plywood if needed.

Material has gone nuts same with insurance. Last roof was 33 squares and 9k for above not including wood and plywood. From JB wholesale Chris who I have bought roofs from for over 20 years.

Is an insurance claim not an option? I would assume if a roofer and the insurance company have a good relationship he can pitch a sale to the insurance company for coverage.

I just had a guy stop by a couple weeks ago to look at some concerns. He did it for free and only asked that if the claim was accepted that he could have job. Turned out my issues weren't as bad as i thought and he said everything really looked good.

Just another avenue to potentially save some money...

Insurance would only cover it if it's from storm damage. Wind blew off the shingles etc.

Pretty easy to tell when they are bad from age.

Couple ideas. Add whoever supports materials to the go fund me. Offer advertising, both physical as well as rdp and see if they want to help. Get some buddies, explain the karma ( yes, its very real ) to them on both the financial and physical parts of joining in to help you defray costs. No matter what, get it done for her. You will be rewarded 10 times over. There's nothing that will make you realize how much you can impact the direction of the world than by helping someone who both needs and deserves it. Your example to everyone that knows you will be what really matters here. Good luck. These are the times I wish I lived out there. Ill bet there's several retired guys that would love to have a few days of work/fun helping you. This is a great way to get the word out

Neighbor has done 3 roofs on street last month for other neighbor's, all in 8-9k, might be good neighbor discount, but pretty straight up dude. That doesn't include tear off, 2 of places he went over top but the last one is was 2k for tear off.
