Ditto that and I have worked for most of the large companies in So Cal such as McDonnell Douglas, JPL, Lockheed, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman and Boeing.

CAD jock... work in the Aerospace industry

You can go to ITT tech and get a certificate in CAD drafting and work your way into some decent design positions.
I work in the structural design group designing wings, fuselage, tails, etc. All composite graphite/epoxy resin.

After 32 years in the biz you can work for 20 somethings straight out of college ... LOL

My friend, Jack Beckman used to be an elevator mechanic. He always joked that he was a vertical transportation specialist. He now races in the NHRA Fuel Funny Car for Don Schumacher Racing

Ross... I just have ask why you would say elevator mechanic.. are you in the trade or do you know someone in the trade?

Try for a Lineman job for electric power transmission/distribution facilities. Just check out the pro's and cons to this occupation first.

The biggest issue is building the calluses on the back you hands from dragging your knuckles on the ground. :D

Lots of apprentice positions coming open as the industry "grays out". Be willing to.move helps.

Single? I'd open one of those Asian massage joints. Good money, ability to open more, day to day visual is good, I doubt they pay accurate numbers in taxes, I'm sure there are side benefits.

Real Estate Appraiser.

Work from home, snap some pictures of a property, write up a report.

I have a really good buddy that does this, to say he is doing very well for himself, is an understatement.

You do need to get some education, also log in so many hours before you can be on your own.

I believe appraisers are charging about $400.00-$450.00 now. I don't see a reason why you wouldn't be able to perform a few a day.
Half the money they charge goes to the appraisal management company. They are swamped right now because of the strong housing market so obviously a downturn could effect business. A lot of old guys in the business and the younger prospects aren't there. I have considered it, but you have to eat crow for a couple years while you apprentice.

On a similar path to this. I'm 21 about a year away from my 4 year degree in business management from BYU, just started getting my certifications for Air Frame & Powerplant.

Currently working 12 hour night shift at a CNC machining company. Planning on getting a few years experience in manufacturing. Probably will need to be a mechanic for a couple years after my schooling is done.

Longterm goal is to be a airframe inspector, ultimate goal would be to do inspections for the FAA. Trying to get all the hard work out of the way while I'm young.

Well Done :thumbsup FAA inspector is a good gig

Never worked for JPL or Lockheed but the others I sure have.
I would still be at NGC if they would give out some decent raises.
They also capped the pension in 2014, and reformulated the bonuses so it was time for me to go.

Thanks. Hopefully it all works out, knowing a few people on the inside is a nice perk. My pops told me at a young age to always have a plan for the future. So I've thought 5 or so years in the future, and made it a goal to always be working towards the things I want.

If you have your 4 year degree Enterprise Car Rental is always looking for new employees. Their business is off the hook now, many opportunities and full benefits in about 60 days. Make manager of a branch, good $$, commission , car, etc. They are my #1 client and are terrific to do work for.

I'm pretty sure the car rental is similar to our business where the path to branch management is through sales. He didn't like sales much.

Car and Equipment rental is very much run like the mob. You go from wise guy to made man when you start bringing the capo's above you lots of money lol

If you can get to key accounts and or national corporate accounts you can make a ton of money and make more than managers but it takes a few years to get your customer network built. They're account based so even if the customer wants to do business with you and doesn't like his current rep you can't have the account unless the current rep lets you have it which would be extremely rare.

Territory manager - Medical Devices

As with any job it has its stressful/annoying times, but at the end of the day I am allowed to run my territory/team with a lot of autonomy and not having someone watch over my shoulder. I get to work from home and make my own schedule... bottom line is as long as the work gets done and business is growing, I can do what I want!

What type of devices?

Mind you I'm going off 2 year old figures as well so it's more now, IMO it's unreal, they wouldn't make anything near that in the private sector for similar work.

Out of curiosity, for a job that you stated you wouldn't do, what do you think is a "fair" wage?

They recruited heavy out of college and I had a friend go to work for them. He hates it! Says he works 10-12 hour days 6 days a week for about $40,000. I make more than that now by a good bit and don't work more than 40 hours, and when j do, I get time and a half.

After reading up on the tech forums I'm looking to code academy and the like to learn code and get my certifications so that I can stay out of more school debt and start working towards a career in software engineering, which apparently, you can do from home, or the beach if you have data :)

Great idea. Take a look at Bloc also. My wife is looking into the same career path. I have a friend who runs a department of coders (SQL) and they pay $114,000/yr for someone with a degree and 2 years experience. You choose the 8 hours you work every day and full benefits.

I take it you are a software engineer?

I used to be. Did that for 3 years out of school. Was in PricewaterhouseCoopers Digital Content Management Group. Ended up walking away due to the hours. Yes the pay is good, but as you work up the ladder, milestones start to drive your schedule and 8 hour days are like vacation.
I remember working multiple 20 hours days for weeks to meet customer milestones. As one point I was working Monday/Tuesday in San Jose, Wednesday/Thursday in Houston and Friday back in San Jose. Spent Saturday and Sunday home in Hermosa Beach.
So if you go this direction work in product development and avoid customer implementations.

I loved working at JPL and would go back in a heartbeat.

I worked at Lockheed at both the Ontario and Palmdale, CA facilities. Was at the Northrop El Segundo facility and enjoyed it. I tried transferring to their Palmdale facility but nothing ever happened with that.

Well Done :thumbsup FAA inspector is a good gig

Get certified in PEGA and an I would have a job for you...3-5 years experience in PEGA and it would be a six figure job. Experience in Java, Oracle Ebiz System experience, Big Data programming in R or Python and there will be plenty of jobs for you and you can make a lot of money for punching a clock..

In all seriousness I cannot find talent in most of the above except Java....and if I do it is normally an Indian national who needs H1B or Green Card sponsorship...we are talking 90-130K individual contributor technical jobs with opportunity for bonus...not leadership jobs. I had to open up search to all over the country to folks that could even work from home and still tough to find good talent unless you are willing to pay above market, as the market is continuing to go up.

Everyone of my nephews/nieces I tell go take computers learn these languages, intern your 3rd/4th year and get a job right out of school.....I did not know anything about computers/programming but with a little work/dedication you can learn like anything else.

I think that has more to do with the type/company you work for such as PWC or E&Y, ect vs. the skillset or job........The big firms are grind houses but extremely good learning and launch places to other places that don't require 20hr work days on the reg. Working at a company in the fortune 10, we grind on release weekends and work our butts off, but there is definitely work life balance and the ability to work mobile from anywhere regularly as my team spans many states and countries.

Off and running, I see.

Check out Coursera, they have tons of classes taught at top-notch schools for very little costs, or free.

Python from Rice University (!), I started the class a few years back but was in to deep on other classes and I had to drop.

Class starts June 27th, if you want to find out if you like it, these courses are a great way to get your feet wet. Just you and about 40K of your closest classmates!

There is also an SEO course from UC Davis

Depending on what skills you have, there are a ton of deployment jobs now and in the future. I've been at it for almost 10 years now. Average pay is 120k a year for trades such at electrician, generator tech, down fall is being away from life.
I was a commercial pilot for 10 years Pryor to this, and did a transition to the UAV world in 06, I doubled my income and have never looked back.

There are some interesting takes here. I'm don't know much, but I do know if u want to be successful there is no such thing as a 40 hour week. Guys that are killing it are working a lot but don't be scared of that. Sometimes that means being on vacation with your family and answering emails from your phone. Leaving the office early but putting in a few hours on the computer at home while your watching TV. Don't worry about money, If u get with a good company and work your ass off.....the money will come. It took me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do but u need to find something that fits your personality. Some people want to earn a decent wage, have no stress, work 40 hours a week, not take work home etc. and that's ok. If u can handle more stress/BS and long hours in exchange for some extra free time and more money then so be it. There is not one master recipe.

Don't overlook healthcare. Lots of great jobs to choose from. I worked construction for a decade, learning from old-timers who didn't put up with BS... Only to watch them all retire when the economy tanked in 08. Didn't like the writing on the wall and made the leap... Never been happier. Work 3 12's and spend 4 with the family, OT optional, and full of bonuses. Not easy by any means but rewarding and indoors, not as physically difficult as construction.

What do you do in the healthcare field? Not afraid to work hard as I already work over 400 hours of OT every year, 95% of which is mandatory, just looking for something I can do without more student loan debt that gives me a chance to grow in someone's business or grow my own. Capital investment is an issue with starting my own business which is why I'm really already working on learning JAVA and other coding languages already as it's pretty much free and has great potential.

Due to recent events(damn morals) I transitioned from an EHS Advisor/Lean Instructor to a house husband. Hours are great, benefits are even better (wife works from home), but pay sucks.

I'm taking some time off to get my projects caught up that weren't getting done due to traveling greater than 90% of the time.

I'll eventually start looking because I am already bored..:rolleyes

I'm 26, I started going down the fire service path out of high school, went to fire academy, emt and worked as a paid call fire fighter. I knew it was what I wanted to do until I found out I was going to be a dad at 19. Took a turn and started working at a waster water treatment plant as an operator, which had good pay benefits etc.. but I knew it wasn't where I wanted to spend another 30 years. I'm finally starting a full time job in the fire service. Like many have stated, the fd offers generous pay, benefits and most importantly time off.

I just retired. I just realized that the most stressful thing I have going now is some of my dreams turn into nightmares and I have to wake myself up.
Looking to have a new company up and running in the next year. But if it becomes stressful, I'll get rid of it. I'm hoping to extend my lifespan at this point.

What does the entail? Something you've done before or just going to invest in something? I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I honestly feel like I'm meant to do big things. I feel it. Sounds dumb but I don't know how else to explain it.

I am a Prosthodontist(dental specialist-anything fake on the head and neck). I had a stroke 7 years ago and it finally got to a point of pain I can't practice anymore. While researching my back surgery I came across a company that make a spinal implant made out of ceramic. I had the idea to produce dental implants in this ceramic. We are submitting to the FDA this week I hope. They will tell us what testing we need more and go forward.
Bottom line is ,,, It is something I know a lot about , but something that could change the face of dental implants. So, "A big idea" like you talk about. I too feel I am meant to do something big. It is a lot of work , but it is exciting at the same time.

Depending on what shedule your dept works, you generally have twice as much time off as you do working. Work for 2 days off for 4 days, there are a few different structures to the schedule.

Sounds like a company I visited about ten years ago when I was covering Scottsdale for an investment bank.

At 25 I was in retail management. Working 50-60hrs a week. I loved the job, but our first kid was born and didn't want to work weelends and holidays any longer.
I did online classes for water and wastewater. Got a water treatment license. Started work for the city in the wastewater field as an operator in training. Stayed with the city for 5 years. Went to work for the state as an operator. That was 20 years ago, I have changed departments. Enjoy what I do work ot if I want.
Started a consulting business for water about 18 years ago. Between the two life is great.
