As a resident of Long Beach, and someone who soaked up every bit of the "Long Beach Sprint Boat Nationals", it's always a bummer when another summer rolls by and we're not back at "The Beach" during the first weekend of August.

Most of you know, the rich history of drag boat, sprint boat, speed ski and barefoot events, along with stand up jet ski races, and countless other events that have taken place during what has been nearly a century, since the stadium was built in 1932.

For the past few months now, I've had a vision for an annual event to commemorate these past events, where folks can bring their old drag boats, sprint and ski boats, jet skis and other boats and water craft that were used during these times, and some that were used at Marine Stadium itself. I'm thinking this could potentially be more than a cackle-fest / show & shine, with the possibility of obtaining permits to allow for different forms of watersport entertainment on the water. Possibly, trick and slalom skiing, some barefootin', a speed skiing demo, maybe some stand-up jet ski races, even possibly some staged nostalgia boat races, that would be limited by a certain MPH. I could see the need for food (bbq) and drink vendors, possibly even a classic rock cover band, for additional entertainment.

For me, Marine Stadium is a serious slice of boat/ski racing history, that is still very much a tangible living place and it would be great to see folks meet up annually to share their war stories and fondest memories from their space in time at "The Beach!"

Feel free to chime in with your ideas for this event, including how to get something like this in motion!

Sad state of affairs …In 1969 it was my 13th birthday and my dad asked you want to go to Irwindale drag strip or boat races in Long Beach? Obviously the boat races.

I am local here in long beach and spend alot of time down in marine stadium.

I do believe its fairly easy to rent out the entire stadium for an event or private party.

I am not super up to date on the current decisions, but i am hearing that they are going to be hosting the 2028 summer olympics here in LA and will be doing the water events in marine stadium. I have heard that after the olympics that Marine Stadium will be closed permanently for boating and will be a "Passive use only" (paddle boards and rowing)

That would be a shame if it proves true.

If that happens doesn't that property go back to the family. I heard someplace that the family had a stipulation of if boat racing was stopped at marine stadium the property goes back to the family.

Just what I've heard.

I raced my first roundy round race in 2013. Great venue and spectators. A couple miles from my house with a lot of family and friends to support.

I like where you’re going with this Greg! I have thought about a protest fun day at the stadium on the first weekend in August! Too late for a permit for August now but an unofficial gathering!

As a young boy in Fullerton 62-69, my Dad would take me to Long beach for the boat races. I am old enough to remember oil derricks in the background. as a kid my favorite class to watch was the little runabouts and hydro's with the crosley 4 bangers. In those day's a kid could walk freely in the pits. i seen the original mortician drag boat with the twin engines, panic mouse with Ray in the seat. ( dad named a small dog Panic , ??)
I have taken a ski ride around that stretch of water.
It's Sad to see the loss of race these venues. Miami is another.
