I’ve looked into entropy resin, it’s a plant based epoxy deal. I like what they are about and have heard good things about the product. I was looking into it in order to run an eco board tag and be more environmentally friendly. But for what I’m doing I can’t get that high gloss and depth and the eco board guys sort of rubbed me wrong by telling me that I wasn’t “eco enough” using a poly product but if I used there buddys plant based stuff I could run the tag. I may use that stuff on some upcoming builds that are more performance based. I have been messing around with a mini gun design, maybe 8’6” or so, model will be called the “Cal Compliant“ I’ve Been busy with some other projects so the board building has been on the back burner, as well I have a back log of builds on the list.

To date this little hobby/project thing here has generated over $40k in charitable contributions. That’s the real story going on, My goal is to hit $100k in charitable contributions and hopefully influence other people to do some shit outside of themselves also.

I vet the organizations I partner with on these things carefully, I don’t want those donations to end up paying some dickheads slip fee down in the harbor, I want to make sure this has an impact on people’s lives.

Several places were contacted, not were willing to come get it. I’ll tell you this much, it’s a hell of a lot of work to process reclaimed material to the point you can work with it for a small project like this vs. having it ready and commercially available. I think big water tanks, bridges and things with larger structural elements may be more what those dudes are looking for.

It’s pretty surreal to see a monetary value like that put on theses pieces. I’m just out here in left field doing my own thing in my own time, circling back to general population and seeing this work recognized is very validating and adds a bread crumb on the trail to follow with this type of work. Being a commercially viable artist in your own lifetime is not something that comes easily. For every nice piece I put out, there are hundreds of fuck ups that have taken place over the years to figure things out

Put some more photos up, do you know the volume? It looks pretty small to be a sup, what are the diminsions? I‘d shoot for about 200 liters on the volume for a sup to float 260lbs 10’6” x 3 1/2-4” 28-30” that’s rough but that’s in the ball park of 200 liters.

Time to rewind a bit and see how we got to where we are right now. A couple years ago I decided to make myself a surfboard just for fun and entertainment just like @Bails is doing right now. I went through this whole process and made my first board, finished it up in late November and it’s sat in my shop until New Years. It was so damn pretty and shiny I considered just hanging it on the wall and calling it art. People would stop by and I’d break it out and we would stare at it, that was cool, but that’s not what I’m about. So I strapped that shit to the roof of my wife’s SUV and headed up norte for the holidays. New Years morning I paddled out on that board in 50* water and surfed on it for the first time. The experience was surreal, it was closure and at the same time a new start to a new year and new adventure.

These wood boards are not like foam boards in the water at all, they are more corky/floaty to start with. Then there is the vibration they resonate once suspended in the water while you’re on top of them. Unique is all I can say, you have to experience it to get the full understanding, it’s like a tuning fork, or tightly wound spring, the structure is under some sort of tension. They are slow to accelerate from a dead stop and get up to speed, however once underway the boards have a sense of drive and purpose, its like driving your grandmas old Cadillac, it’s lays down any ripple on the water and glides on It’s own merits. Long story short, everything about taking these board in the water is fucking cool and let’s you know that life is good.

board #1 is was put together with some stuff I had laying around the shop. Some bass, walnut and a piece of construction grade redwood from Lowe’s. It’s built like a tank, I didn’t know how to build these things yet so I over built it a bit, you could throw it off a cliff and it will be fine. With that comes about 5lbs of uneeded weight.

I decided to design and build myself a second surfboard, I learned some stuff on the first build and had some ideas. One of those ideas was to automate some processes and cut the internals on a CNC router. Somewhere during The process in converting files I managed to scale the entire file down about 10%, fuck if I know, at this stage in the game will chalk that up to Devine intervention, dumb luck, me being a mororn, like I said fuck if I know.

I figured out everything was off when I started assembling the internal frame on the jig and it didn’t fit. I was bummed, sat down in my chair and pulled out my phone to wander off a bit on the inter web. About 5 minutes later I see a post from Bildos wife about the Saint Baldericks event they put on, I go every year and it’s some real shit. So I decide I’m going to build this board and donate to be auctioned off. Now we’re back in business with board number two, I get out of my chair and start busting it out.

This board was bass and walnut, much fuller rail, different rocker, everything was different from #1. the build went smooth as fast, there was not a lot of time to get it done and I had committed. There was blood sweat and tears in this build, you have a lot of time to think when your build this stuff, the hands are on auto pilot and the mind can wander a bit. I remembered meeting a little girl named Abigale at the event the year before, my daughter and her were playing, she was a sweetheart. Some time after that event I had found out that Abigale had lost her battle with cancer, I’m guessing she was 7 or so and that’s just not fair. this Build was going to help kids like her so I knocked it out and got it there on time, even recruited my daughter to help, she was all in.

OGshocker ended up purchasing the board at the event, it was a heated bidding war between he and Bills Mom, and some other poor schelp who had no idea what he stepped in the middle of LOL Bills mom was phoning in bids, and busting Mark up every time he would write down a bid, finally he gets on the phone with her and says, give me the number I can have it for, your cutting into my drinking time with the crew Mark told me to take it back to my shop as he had an idea and needed to make a call the following week. TBC..........

Mark calls me up and says we need to take the board out to El Segundo, he’s made arrangements to have the LA Kings hockey team sign it and he’s going to donate It to the Kings Care Foundation where it will be auctioned off at the tip a king annual charity event that the Kings put on. The proceeds go to Childrens Hospital of Los Angelas. We took the board out to corporate headquarters and into the board room, where they would have all the guys come by over the next week to sign the board. After that I would pick it up and apply another hot coat over the signatures to protect them and make this thing really a nice piece. While in the board room I got to meet the CEO of the kings organization. I’d done a bit of research prior to the meeting and found out that this kings were celebrating their 50th year anniversary and had a special anniversary logo, I asked if I could put the logo on the board and got a deer in the head light look for a second. He says don’t ask anyone don’t tell anyone, just do it LOL I got the board all dialed in with signatures preserved and logo in place, then we went to the event and had one hell of a night. This was a silent auction format with some technology involved, you get an account and can bid from your phone at the bar the event is pretty rad, the whole team is there and they have autograph and photo stations set up for each, attendees can meet who they want, get an autograph, photo, and have a little meet and greet. If you’re a kings fan this is a must go event and you will not regret it one bit. The auction side of things was huge, tons of really cool Kings memorabilia of every sort, travel packages, all a variety of stuff.

We all sat over at the bar and watched the numbers on the surfboard auction rise, bidding started at $1000. And crept up from there over the next few hours, finally closing out the auction at $10,000 The highest item of the night. board #2 the saint baldericks board had now taken on a second life as the kings board, this board had generated $12,500. Between these two events for children in need. I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I know a good thing when I see it, so with the ethos of letting this proceed by its own design, I decided to lean on it a little and see where it would go.

As you’re starting to see there are people around this thing that have been and continue to be catalysts in making things happen, without those people who have taken the time to help “this thing of ours” along, I’d be sitting in my shop with a pile of sawdust and a rack full of boards no one would know about any of it. People amaze me and being involved with their generosity And kindness has been a path altering experience.

After the event I made arrangements with the new owner to deliver and install the board at his place, it’s a wall hanger in his home gym on a pretty epic estate

in conversation with the new owner it turns out he is an avid map collector, further more on that he actually had a map room and asked if I’d like to see it. Now I don’t know many folks with a map room so I said absolutely, matter of fact I didn’t even know map collecting was a thing prior to that. Without getting too far into it, I asked to see the prize piece because every collection has one. He slides open one of the drawers and pull this map on to the map viewing table, which every decent map room has of course. Turns out there are a lot of bullshit maps out there from way back in the day when planet earth was still being explored. this map had some bullshit land mass on it called (give me money for some boats and we’ll name it after you) these dudes would make up some bulls hit map and then go hustle money from kings and wealthy dudes to fund their adventures, some things never change I guess, anyways I learned all about maps that day and made a new friend as well.

pretty crazy how things fall into place sometimes. We were having dinner with Tony and Tina from HTW and talking about the Kings board and Tony says why don’t we do one for the Angels? The Angels have a foundation as well that does all kinds of fundraising and supports Children’s Hospital of Orange County. Tony calls Arte and gets the green light for the board and its on. This board was Basswood with old growth redwood from my private lumber stash. I took the board down to the stadium and into the clubhouse to have the team sign it, then it got an Angels logo and fresh hot coat and polish.

not gonna lie, the clubhouse was amazing and I could live there LOL

That should float you fine It didn’t look that large in the photo but you’re good.

foiling fins is pretty cool,I give myself reference lines in 1” increments on both sides of the fin and center line then work the removal of material evenly side to side. Just take your time and you will see What need to happen.

I would skip making a paddle, go buy a nice carbon fiber paddle and enjoy using it. Light paddles are a good thing once you get into a good outing you will be thankful. This SUP is 10’6, it’s a pop deal from overseas, my wife does yoga on it and I don’t feel bad when I bang it on things or I see the kids walking on it sitting on the dock Still trying to get the hang of riding them in the surf, but as long as I’m having fun it’s all good.

I think you’re on pointby what I can see and are gonna be stoked to get this thing on the water. I’d make sure youadd enough layers to the rails so you can shape it very full for stability, you can easily remove unwanted material during shaping, but if you don’t have enough there it will effect why you can do with the shape, make sense?

also before you seal that puppy up you will want to put in some blocking for the fin, honestly I’d just put a fin box in and go buy a nice wood fin, being able to remove the fin is nice when transporting a few boards (you will make more )
