So say you had a heart attack in LHC what are your chances?

Is Vegas the the answer for medical needs?

I did a search on here and came up empty.

My mom's husband was 57 years old (MaK is named after him), healthy, active, outdoorsy, rarely drank etc. He did not make it. I will state that the staff of HRMC did their damnedest. They got him back twice, but the original downtime to respond to the scene was too long. You have minutes...as in single digits to survive in most cases. It's not like TV. I hold NOTHING against HRMC, EMS, LHCPD/FD etc. They were all wonderful. I hold a lot of anger towards the person who created that delay in response time (a fucking coward), but in terms of the medical staff, they did everything that would have occurred in any other hospital...15+ min down you are essentially brain dead, which was unfortunately the case in our deal. You are in a "rural" area and with that comes risks. HRMC staff checked up on my mom for a long time after his death...and that said a lot.

I have a heart condition, I have some contingencies in place...but I also know full well if something goes down while in Havasu my odds are slim. I spend a lot of time in rural, off grid places for my hobbies/activities. I'm not letting the fear stop me from living. Response time matters in terms of survival however...

Ive had 2 HA"s and had wonderful care at LHRH in the past, but thats not the case now from what I have heard, and just had a broken arm this past weekend, went to the hospital backed place in the Hobby Lobby center, closed at 2 pm, went to the other 2 urgent care facilties in town, 2.5 hour wait, so went to the ER at the hospital, got right in amazingly. Called Lakeside Ortho this mornin and cant see about it till Friday morning which SUCKS.
IMHO the medical field here is in bad shape, not enough staff for a town this size, in fact they had to close the second floor of the hospital a few weeks ago becuase of lack of staff so the paper reported, damn shame
Good Luck

My dads friend had a very big open heart surgery at Lake havasu regional. It was during desert storm 10 years ago. His primary cardiologist at USC said they did a great job.

My wife had a heart attack in 2016 at our home in LHC. Classic severe chest pains etc about 4:30am. Called 911, paramedics and ambulance to our house, ambulance transport (lights & siren) to our LHC hospital. Straight into the Cath Lab. By the time I got our house locked up etc, I hurried to the hospital, walked into the Cath Lab, they had already completed the required treatment. Insertion of a stint in her right coronary artery. She was required to spend the night. That pissed her off. It was the DS Street Party. She missed that, but did make it to the shoot out. She received good care at Havasu Regional Medical Center. Dr Attasi was the on call emergency cardiologist for her stint procedure. She continues to see him, just once a year.

what urologist would you recommend ? In LHC

Dr. Gleason retired last June, he was the only one left. There is a new one in town, but I don't know his name. Might call Gleason's old office Southwest Surgery Center 855-8515. I am sure they will have a referral to who is in Havasu.

Just a side note. It doesn’t matter where your are at if it’s your time. One of my cousins was actually in their ER room telling the doctors about his pain and where it was. He had a heart attack right there. I guess it’s called the “Widow Maker”
Had the best of care and everything at his disposal but there was nothing they could.
Still dealing with my BIL. I’ll try to update the that thread later.

Sorry for thread Jack. Always good to have a plan in place.

Your chances are good. When the bill comes you're dead.

The bastard doctors that own Havasu Regional are complete charlatans and with no exaggeration charge 700% over the going cost; Supposedly a federal law that hospitals are required to make available to patients of which they do not.

Thankfully there are companies that specialize in keeping these heath care whores in check and can be used to fight them to get paid the fair amount not their robbery rates.

A friend dealing with heart/bp issues has opted to go up to a Kingman cardiologist for his care vs the previous cardiologist he was seeing in Havasu. He's scheduled for a stent.

That means he had an occlusion of his left anterior descending artery. That is the main vessel that supply blood to the heart tissue itself, very high mortality rate with that one

I couldn’t tell you yes or no from Sam on that. Just know Shit happens quick sometimes and there isn’t damn thing you can do about it.
His wife has since said he was feeling a little off in the preceding days. So good food for thought
If you’re feeling off. Less normal then even when you don’t feel good. Don’t wait. Go get checked out thoroughly.

Kingman has excellent health care. My wife and I have been referred to Kingman several times by Parker and Havasu doctors. Havasu just doesn't have lots of modern equipment. My wife has to go to Kingman for mammograms can't do them in Havasu. Just crazy.

Couldn't have said it better, like you mentioned if you feeling off it's best to be checked, there is a marker in the blood work called troponin that is used to tell if there is injury to the heart. The ekg monitors we use only look at the electrical aspect of heart health and not the chemical.

that could happen here ( delayed response Due to budget cuts, staffing etc ) in San Diego area.

Myocardial infarctions are not recommended.
KMRC did my Cabg-6, back in '17.
Crude but effective is all I can say.
In on Monday, walking out on Sunday.
Can't help you with HRMC, but if it's your time, you know the rest.

Does not matter where you live.
Had a work peer, 54 father of 3 daughters, who passed away of a heart attack last week while presenting at sales kickoff for his company in Vegas. His oldest daughter works with me, and I told her last week we got you covered. Take all the time you need! Biggest issue as stated already = It took too long for EMS to get to him and he was DOA at the hospital.
Really has F’d with me.

We have a 2nd home in the mountains in central PA. Everyone always said if you ever have a medical issue there then you’re fucked……well, i was there by myself blowing leaves one day and i had a left anterior stemi 100 percent blockage in September and i’m still here. The key to any survival is time (golden hour). If it wasn’t for training that i’ve had, me recognizing what was happening to me and calling for help immediately then i wouldn’t be here right now. I can’t thank the ems enough that helped get me rolling in to a cath lab in about 40 mins.

I’d say you just have to trust the local care on something like this. You may not have a choice.

Very true. His response was delayed due to the actions of a worthless excuse for a human being panicking and running away instead of calling 911, essentially leaving him to die. I don't want to get much further into it than that but I will never forgive him, and he has completely thrown his life away since via drugs etc..and now rests comfortably where he belongs in the custody of the AZDOC. Karma.

I live my life to the fullest for a reason, tomorrow is promised to no one and I don't want to work my life away and never enjoy it.

I have first hand knowledge and anger.
My mom went in there in 2019. Not a life threatening abdominal issue.
Mistakes were made. Bad ones, like life ended
By the time my dad demanded transport to Phoenix the damage was done. She passed in Phoenix.

The staff is fine. The doctors are not.
This is the biggest reason why havasu is not on my retirement list.

Before you ask...yes attorneys were consulted. Hospitals are extremely good at covering their asses.

If you can make it to Vegas or Phoenix without dying, start driving.

This...time is key. Back home in HI, the fatality rate of heart attacks outside of Oahu is exponentially higher. You are being flown to Oahu, and say a flight from BI is more than that.... Molokai, Lanai, Maui, Kauai is 25-35 min from pad to pad. Major MI's are often a death sentence in rural HI for that reason unfortunately.

Sorry to hear….

I am the same way in my activities, it took me some time to really get over my incident but i do still think about the “what if’s”…..i now carry a spot x with me anytime i am out in the wilderness. I also let someone know where i’m going and check in at each stop if i am out by myself. It makes me feel better knowing that i’m trying just in case…..

I took dog aspirin (only aspirin we had in the house), waited for the wife to drive from Williams, 2.5hrs, to take me to KMRC (another 30 minutes). Dr said aspirin probably saved my life.

I'm actually impressed with that timeline for a bird. I easily fly out 6-10 patients a month here in blythe. Most of the time our birds come from quartzite, but I will get some from Parker, havasu and imperial Valley. I have never had a bird land in less than 35 minutes, problem is that it's still 15 minutes to load (5-7 if we are doing a hot load) and another 45-50 flight time to the receiving hospital. Hell I just flew one out earlier today.

My old man had a heart attack and triple bypass in LHC last desert storm. I spent a lot of time in the hospital there with him and the surgeons and nurses, and honestly they were very good.

The issues are with the local cardiologists for follow up treatment, they are very busy and it's a long wait to get in to see them.

After his surgery i ended up bringing him to vegas to meet with a cardiologist that now does all of his meds and labs remotely and does telehealth visits and shares info with his primary.

For Primary care "Dr. V" Vivek Narasimhan is phenomenal, especially for older people. My Father is 80 in a couple months, Dr. V is a fantand thorough doctor, and his office staff are excellent.

I caught a story about it recently which is where I got the numbers. I’m going to assume they weren’t including load times etc..and I know on some of the islands they have to send a bird which pushes them out of the “golden hour.”

I’ve seen the quartzite guys take off a few times, always wondered what their realistic times were

Singleton : outstanding that you did that for his daughter, the way it should be done.

Plan in place, hug your family.

I have dealt with too many families that when a father or mother or any family member that has had any dollar value at all. NO WILL… NO LIVING TRUST.

If you don’t have a plan in place before you die. You are doing a horrible job of protecting and making it easier on the ones you leave behind.

Sorry it is the fact. Family has to decide, did you want burial? Cremation? Who gets what? Don’t be an idiot and put your loved ones though the likely most stressful time. Most people just don’t want to talk about death. No one gets out of here alive. Suck it up buttercup and prepare.

when the LHC paramedics wear take me to Vegas or Kingman bracelets, you have your answer.
getting into a cardo Dr in LHC is near impossible, although LHC Dr. Quinn has a excellent reputation you will be dead before he gets to you, Dr. Assi office is the same deal, the real problem is LRMC, it is definitely a FOR PROFIT hospital and you will need a cardio Dr. when you get the bill (no matter how good your insurance is), I live less then a 1000ft from LRMC and I am doing everything in Kingman at KRMC, I would look closely at the "Self Pay" option at KRMC it may be equal to or less then your insurance deductible and a good portion of the KRMC staff is Havasu residents, what I can tell you for sure is as I hit 60yrs and need health care is that the LHC health care system is absolutely awful if you need care for anything other then Pills and you better plan for those at least 3 months in advance.

I had a heart attack, February 2015. Cliff Notes version: Taken to La Paz Regional by ambulance, stabilized on the way (4 blocks from my house), pretty much threw 6 baby aspirin in my mouth and said "chew", hooked the rest (EKG, O2, Drip, etc.) up on the way. The Helo was warming up when I got there. Brief exam and review by the ER, into the Helo, flight to Havasu Regional. As soon as the Helo set down, I was rushed straight into the Cath Lab. By the time I was prepped, Dr. Atassi had come in, told me what's what, 100% blockage in right Coronary Artery, and began the stent placement. Spent 4 more days at Havasu Regional. Service was fair - good. Some shifts better than others, but acceptable for someone who absolutely HATES hospitals.

Note that all this happened on a Sunday Afternoon, Valentines Day weekend. No waiting anywhere, except for a brief delay for the ambulance and medics to arrive after calling 911. That was made up for, when I was on the bus within a minute of them showing up, and in the ER about 2 minutes later. Follow-up (still occurring) with Dr. Atassi has been outstanding, never have an issue getting in to scheduled appointments. Have had no heart problems since it happened.

The other times I've had to go there, (Thyroid uptake, misc X-rays, tests, etc) have been "pleasant" and no issues getting an appointment when needed and/or walk in when not. Unless it would be for specialized chronic care, such as cancer, I have no problem whatsoever with Havasu Regional, their facilities, Staff or associate Doctors. All my Doctors, (Primary Care, ENT for Thyroid, Cardiac, & Dermo) are based in Havasu, and are among the most caring and competent providers that I've had. Outside of overly specialized care, I don't see the need to go anywhere else.

Edit: Don't know too about costs. My health insurance at the time (County) covered pretty much all of it. (Not line of duty so no Workman's Comp). Now @ 67 YOA, with MEDICARE and TRICARE, I don't even see the bills. No co-pays, no deductibles, no costs, ever, except the MEDICARE premium taken out of my SS.

Edit2: My heart attack was during peak Snowbird season, plus the Sara Park Fireworks weekend, so the town was jammed. No wait or bumps in the road, even with the town overfull.

it's changed allot since 2015, The growing population has overwhelmed the system, things are different when your already flat lined on the table, and that is the only way your going to get any attention in Havasu is to be brought in by emergency transport. I have watched to many friends go into LRMC with minor issues and not come out, I have watched friends die here waiting on treatment because no one wanted to take responsibility for the case or much less take it on because they were going to retire THIS IS HOW WE LOST WATERDOG!!!!!!!!! last year. I just cannot recommend Havasu, Fort Mohave or Bullhead to anyone they are all the same company hell bent on profit over patient (or so it appears). I can how ever from experience recommend Kingman Regional, they are a teaching hospital in fact they call it a campus they are a direct associate of the Mayo Clinic and must adhere to their standards, if any issues arise the full resources of The Mayo Clinic are at your disposal, Havasu will fight tooth and nail not to let you go to a higher treatment facility for care, I will be joining you shortly Allen with exactly the same Stent in the same place as a one day out patient operation, this will be my 4th stay at KRMC and honestly I think it's the best decision I ever made in or for my life.

HRMC had the first American College of Cardiology accredited Cath Lab in all of Arizona. They also have the latest version of the Da Vinci Robotic surgery system.
I will continue to take my chances in non ACC accredited facilities here in AZ like the Mayo Clinic :)

Heart Attack - Aspirin. Similar to Boat Cop, my wife also did the Aspirin chew. Believe it should be true Aspirin, not a substitute. Low dose, 81 mg, is ok, just chew more of them.

Crowded Doctor’s Office - My wife sees Atassi once a year. Yes, his office can be busy. My wife says, Bad doctor’s offices are not usually crowded.

Area Health Care - My brother lives in an upscale area of Coachella Valley. I assumed the area would have great health care. But, not always the case. They drive to Riverside for their health care.
