Depends on the surgery. I went back to work (installing doors and hardware) 1 week after having a laminectomy. Took about 3 weeks and I was back at it full tilt, climbing gang forms and building shit.

Wishing you the best!

You guys know the story of the Christmas Truce from World War I? It's one of the most beautiful stories from that awful war and I'll link to it (I'm sure you can also Google a shorter version). There have only been a few verbal grenades thrown over in that other thread, but this post reminded me of the Christmas Truce. Thanks, Ziggy and fellow inmates- that was classy and I really appreciate it. Surgery went well and pretty pain free right now. It'll be a while before I see any of you on the water but feel free to wave down Tommy, Tyler, or Paul on the water. Tell 'em hello and see if you can find any common ground- they're good guys but honestly we've all been beaten up a bit over this boating CD and a handshake is a good new beginning. Don't give the new guy too much shit. Thanks, guys.

So are you home?
Or staying overnight?
Glad it went well and you're not in pain:thumbsup

You'll find, the longer you are here that this is a great group of folks.
If you're bored look back a few pages on just about any section of the forums. There's tons of great content.Tech, history, personal triumphs, and a few threads about members who are unfortunately no longer with us.

If you have a lot of time on your hands, this is about as interesting and inspirational thread I have ever seen, anywhere on the net.

Thanks for the link, I wil have some time on my hands to check it out. They got sick of me and sent me home- may have helped that my wife is a nurse and promised to drag me back in if needed.

I figured you might have some time.

And,yet another member here with a spouse working the front lines in health care.:thumbsup
Which means from time to time as they keep their certs up to date you may run across books in the house similar to the one I found on the end table today.

After more than 20 years you'd think I would be used to it,but the pics in some of those books choke me up.

How ya feeling today Steve? The day after is usually a bit less comfortable.
Glad to hear it all went well, that you're home safe and in good hands.:thumbsup
.
I believe you are beginning to see that we are not just punks on the river but good people with good intentions.
The vast majority of us on RDP have what we call RA....river awareness. We care about our lake. Being part of the 35-135mph crowd doesn't mean we disrespect the lake. Hell, many of my visits to various beaches adds trash to my load because we will pick up after those that left crap behind....of which I might add, fishing line a big culprit.;)
I appreciate you being here and sharing info to the best of your ability or allowance. Sharing your officers names also adds personality to possible future contacts, makes them real people and not just "cops". I think most of us have great respect for LEO's, just not always the method.
.
Rest and recuperate now, follow doctors orders. :thumbsup

Gelcoater, looks like you've got my number. You could not have recommended a better thread for me to read while I mend (doing well, Ziggy, but you're right about the second day being less comfortable- haven't needed any Percs yet though). I've been obsessed for about 13 years with the idea of buying a big piece of land, growing a garden and fruit trees, some chickens, pigs, and solar. I spend far too much time online looking at LandWatch.com. The single best thing about working for the Feds is that I've gotten to work all over the country for the same employer- Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Florida, California, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Arizona. And once I figure it all out I can probably find a job close to that land I'm seeking. The other good thing about being a Federal LEO is forced retirement by 57. I've been looking a lot at the Northwest primarily because I don't want any worries over water and without a good well Arizona's future looks pretty scary. I've looked at this property online about 200 times and if I disappear somebody, this just might be where I've gone. Come on up if you want to do some salmon fishing off the back porch. Thanks for the link- truly heartened to find so many of you share the dream. I'm gonna go read some more.

How did you like actually living up in Alaska??

I went up there for two weeks when I was a kid, and it's still the most beautiful place I've ever been too. Of course, this was in the summer. It really never got dark.

I loved it. In the summers I managed the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary out in Bristol Bay. Just me and one other person living on an island with up to 10,000 walrus and a quarter million seabirds. Our visitors were National Geo photographer types and some pretty adventurous folks. Totally off grid. Just me and my now wife for a few of those seasons. Winters I was back to office work in Anchorage, but I love cross-country skiing and Anchorage has one of the best urban trail systems- illuminated so it didn't matter that it got dark two hours before I got off work. My wife didn't enjoy the winters as much and we moved south. Arizona has been good to us too.

Wow. What an adventure...

I read James Mitchner's book Alaska, after I got back. Wish I would have read it before my trip up there. I would have checked out a whole lot more places.

We stayed at a B&B in Anchorage for a few days, then at my friends in Fairbanks. He took us to a lake that was reserved for only the military (he was stationed up there) and did some of the best fishing I've Ever done.

The trout we caught were just beautiful. They were huge and delicious! My friends wife cooked em over our campfire, wrapped in foil, with a little butter and lemon as well. That was the best fish I have Ever tasted, and that was close to fourty years ago now. Such an amazing place. I'd love to go back again.

Your story makes it clear why you feel the way you do about Havasu. The difference between there and here is way beyond night and day. Alaska is almost like being on a different planet, when you compare it to here!

Only someone that has been there will understand what I'm saying. You've actually lived there. I have no doubt you know what I mean. 👍

It's interesting, my S-I-L and her husband lived most of their lives in Alaska, I believe near Fairbanks. They now live here in Havasu and couldn't be happier. Oddly enough, they've met more than one old aquaintence from their area of Alaska that live here now too.
Not to say they don't miss it, but after so long a time there I think the long cold winters wore them down.

Fairbanks is brutal and I couldn't have handled -60 winters either. Anchorage weather was moderated by the adjacent ocean and honestly wasn't much colder than winters on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. If I were ever to go back, Anchorage or the Kenai Penninsula are the only places I'd consider living long term. Beautiful state though and anybody who hasn't visited should.

My F-I-L owns one of the premier fishing lodges in Alaska, located in Point Baker.. It's featured on ESPN sports etc.. all the time.

Point Baker is in the middle of freakin nowhere, town of like 8 people or something.. I asked him one time, "How did you come to pick this place?" His answer was relatively simple "I traveled the entire earth until I found the most beautiful spot, with the best fishing and said this is it"

The whales sleep on his beach... Snore like freight trains.. (No shit). I saw so much cool shit I'll never forget in the 2 weeks I was up there.. I can't wait to go back.

Lol.....they seemed a bit surprised that someone willingly spoke to them.

Probably just as surprised you weren't shooting a video of them :D

Good luck with your recovery...all the best. I had spinal surgery in my neck 6 weeks ago and the recovery time off has been good. I know how you feel being pain free at this point. I woke up from surgery pain free-it was incredible. Had some lingering soreness from the surgery, but that's pretty much gone and I'm working on building up strength and waiting for the fusion to set. Good for you...
