Looks like they were supposed to be August 3-4th but is cancelled. Is Ross still trying to work with the city on getting the permit back or is it a done deal for good?

Sadly, I think the races are done in LB. I've not seen any updates from Ross.

All hope is not yet lost but it is definitely an uphill battle. That race is a significant contributor to the financial health of the club. He will continue to work at restoring racing at that venue. Currently the area is apparently under renovation for other "boat racing" activities. The lefties in the city are not fond of our loud and dangerous type of racing so that too is becoming an influence to what type of racing that facility is used for.

I appreciate your optimism. I don't share it though. LB doesn't want boat racing back. Otherwise it would not have gone away in the first place.

There's a handful of rich folks with influence that live around Appain Way that hate the noise, then they use "it's dangerous," as an excuse to stop the races.
Very sad for Long Beach and surrounding cities because sooo many people love to come to Marine Stadium and watch racing.

Susie Price was the Council woman for District 3 in LB and she had a handful of rich folks pushing to stop racing at Marine Studium. She knew she was about to make a run for Mayor and she was gonna need these peoples help. So she pushed and pushed to make it harder and harder to get permits, and pay for more security, more life guards, more insurance, more safety barriers. Basically making not cost effective.
Well, she's gone, she didn't get elected to Mayor and she's no longer on the Council. So maybe it's possible.
Ross needs to work with John Morris, if anyone can get it done in Long Beach its him.

You have two days a year where you can make some noise at Marine Stadium…….
4th of July & New Year’s Eve !
Make the most of it and have a Cookout Lobsterfest whatever / light off the Bad Boys and celebrate , even the city of Long Beach can’t shut it down 😎
( I would also put money on it you will have a few cops down there cooking Hot Dogs ) it’s American !

One of the main reasons us racers voted to rejoin APBA was because we were told doing so was a major influence to LB to being allowed to return to that venue. We will see what happens for next year. I hope it's true. Returning to APBA added considerably to our costs to race.

they allow the Long Beach Grand Prix and that makes a shit ton of noise ?????

maybe the powers to be can get a hold of the heads over there and strong arm the city as fellow racers to continue the sport ???

That race brings in major $$$$$ to the city. Sprint boat racing......not so much.
i get that , but maybe somebody knows somebody that knows somebody from the Grand Prix that can convince the city council really nicely to let them race ?

racers helping racers ?

This sounds like a replay of 50 years ago when Long Beach council woman Renee Simon decided to make the closure of Marine Stadium part of her campaign strategy to become mayor. She never did attain the mayor position although she thought aligning herself with the Alamitos Heights homeowner group (very small in number, but very vocal about ending boat racing at the Stadium) was possibly going to be her ticket to the top spot.

IMO, if boat racing ever hopes to regain use of the Stadium, it will need to elect council members who strongly favor reasonable racing policies. It can be done but it would be take an enormous amount of work and significant financial backing. Is the boat racing community up for that challenge? Certainly APBA is not the answer.

Liberal Long Beach hates boat racing. They've been trying to stop it for decades and with a good amount of success. I'm amazed that Ross has succeeded at keeping the race going as long as he has! After we lost Greg and Jay, I thought this could be the end. I'd like to see the races continue but each loss takes a toll on all of us. :(

Thanks Jerry -- what's the job pay? Seriously , if I was 10 or 15 years younger I might be interested in the challenge -- but it would be a grind. I don't know if Ross is still actively trying to work some magic or not. Long Beach politics have been slimy for decades.

That’s a real shame, my dad ran SK there back in the 60s when it looked totally different. I saw some races with mufflers in the 80s but it wasn’t the same.

I live in Long beach, been going to the stadium races since I was a kid. (lived in Lakewood growing up)

Ironically the city of LB still touts the stadium's history with SCSC on its website.

Well, in the mean time come on down to San Diego for the Bayfair event on Sept. 13-15 and watched sprint boats plus the hydroplanes/thunderboats all in one venue. Can't beat it. And the eye candy is X100 too.......win/win.

There is a huge project going on right now connecting the water of marine stadium to the Colorado lagoon which is a few hundred yards away. My guess is the street closures and huge construction site are the cause of the cancellation. They were supposed to be done this month but it’s pushed to next year.
