Lavey Craft has teamed up with Boats Unlimited out in Texas to begin this new build.

Molds got cleaned buffed and prepped, topsides on 3rd coat of wax... Nailing down the gelcoat scheme within the week.

Excited to see it all go together.

Will be good to see Lavey come back. My 2000 24NuEra, is an awesome boat, and was built to last. The construction and rigging are top notch. The hull still looks new and performs as good or better than any new stepped V that I've been in.

So glad to see some Lavey builds! I think it could help get the name back up in the mix of the top custom builders.

Btw.... dust off them Seabring molds. Lol!

Hello everyone. I signed up currently here so I can follow this thread among other threads on the RD forums. This is John from Boats Unltd. It is great to see Laverycraft and myself putting a new 2017 single engine build together. There will be more pics and info posted as we go forward from here. I would like to thank the Laveycraft crew and Dave S. aka Uncle Dave for all the time and long talks we had coming together for this new build along with new ideas.

This brand new 29 build for us will be a show boat and our demo boat plus enter into poker runs to help market Laverycraft in eastern and North Eastern parts of the country and Canada, hopefully to gain name recognition producing sales thru out. The boat will head to a home base in Upstate New York when completed and for the year 2017. More info to come on the new build.

Also if anyone has questions about Laveycrafts feel free to ask or checkout www.laveycraft.com or you can ask me as I would give you my personal cell number. Boats Unltd currently is putting a new website together. Thanks John

You spray for Lavey also? I was under the impression they had their own guys?

I've been known to spray a Lavey or two.:cool

I did the F1-11 2750 race boat Cooper used to run and the later 28Evo he ran.Among a few other boats in their production line.

Sorry I have not been back up here sooner than this. Very busy as I still have a extremely large customer base for boat service and repair especially during this time of the year.

We have already made our plans for LOTO Shootout for 2017. we are looking to haul the mail with the new 29 being built and more so during the Shootout. We actually will have a team with use for that whole week. The engine builder and Tuner will be there as well putting forth extra effort to get every last bit of power out this beast. We want to put this 30.6 ft with a 8.6 beam full cabin and full interior Lavey Craft on the map for speed.

The jist of the engine build for now. Dart Big M - 665 CID all NA build -no SC - no TURBO - No SPRAY, Dry sump oiling, 8 O2 sensors, MS3 Pro ECM - all on 91 pump gas.

More to come and updates as we go. Next month will be the word on who the engine builder is. Kind of surprise and the reasons why.

Lavey Craft builds one at time and one of kind for their owners. www.laveycraft.com

What drive are you putting behind the beast?

Had a chance to read all posts -

Sorry the big 29 kicked your nutz for all that taping. it looked like a lot.

Lavey29 likes Lavey 29 --------- ME 2

And for the drive - it is giving me sleepless nites.

And so is the headers -leak proofing -

Do not want to be the R & D for some of the surfaces drives on the market especially with a twin step 29 that I have no idea how it will run with SD's. Plus the huge amount of time to dial it all in. Then we have to do all that prop testing. Those props will drain your wallet in hurry.

That leaves IMCO. But most likely the SCX inwhich can mean slowing the hull down. Do not want that either. No free dinner with drives on the market currently.

I didn't get pics of the area to be red was exposed or the orangy yellow small blend.

I'm thankful they have one of these things.

With the bulk of the colors out of the way a few pieces of masking are removed, exposing the area for lettering.

Stickers supplied by Dave at cal signs
http://www.calsignsandgraphix.com/

The stickers served at temporary stencils to mask around, then go around each letter with fine line tape.

Spray with black, pull the tape and the rest of the masking and the blue fade is the last color before backing with a final black over the entire mold.

It is to bad the young don't want to learn a trade/art in the boating industry...They are all money driven and don't want to get there hands dirty.
Once again,GREAT work Gelcoater !!!!!!!!!!!!

The service and repair end is harder than hell to hire anyone and really no young people entering in that field either. The aging marine techs are retiring and down the road it will be very hard to have a true expert work on your boat. Just my 2 cents.

Back to the Lavey 29 thread and thanks Gelcoater and UD.

There it is.
One day while I was blacking out a boat I was finishing at Lavey,Chris says to keep the black in the gun and rolled that thing in.That big metal upright tank, the exterior of the water tank, and that tank above Chris's head. All shot in gelcoat.
That scuff just above Chris's head is about the only one to speak of.That was at least 13-14 years ago.

Gelcoater,

When you say that you're "done", does the gelcoat dry up and the layup can be continued the following day, or say you completed the gelcoat on say Friday, and the layup of the fiberglass starts on Monday, can the gelcoat stay dry that long and still adhere to the fiberglass layers when it starts being laid up on Monday?

The gel used is air inhibited,so it won't completely dry without a surface to dry against.(and why surfacing agent is applied to repairs)So the top coat of gel will accept a layup even after sitting a weekend.

I'm not a big fan of leaving gel in the mold overnight if the job isn't complete. The chances of some portion of the work lifting away from the mold is there. On this job I did just that though, left it over night. The amount of tape needed and the amount of detail involved in doing the Lavey logo in the mold was just to great for me to handle in one session.

I typically won't spray on a Friday unless we have reliable laminators set up to work the weekend.(sort of rare;)) so rather than do a Friday spray most times I will opt for a Sunday spray,so laminators walk in Monday morning to most of a weeks work.

Heres a quick time lapse of the process. Really labor intensive and tricky to do.

Now I know firsthand why

1. Lots of companies don't offer it as a service or sell you into thinking you don't need it.
2. Companies that do do it charge/ or differentiate because of it.

You need specialized equipment, skilled hands, and lots prep work.
Its a lot of work to do even with 12 hands helping out.

Chris assigned everyone their task, and did a dry run, tweaked and optimized for all the foreseeable variables- then went live.

Thought you said it was time lapse?
Didn't look much slower than the pace Chris goes on any given day?

Really curious to see how this 29 turns out. Of course as a prior owner of the 29 model I can tell you they run nice and solid for sure.
