So after almost 7 years of working from a home office, I took a different job where I need to go into the office every day - With a 32 mile commute each way. Rather than spending the money on fuel and putting the wear and tear on my truck, I have been looking for something cheap to use as a commuter car..

I started off thinking I would get a Smart car, then considered a TDI VW like Tom Brown has, then thought about everything from a Honda Civic to an older Mercedes or Cadillac. LomitaBob sent me a PM and suggested a Prius, which I had never considered because I don't like anything that has to do with the image of a typical Prius driver. I did some more research and realized that prices on a used Prius are about the same as everything else I was considering, but the Prius will get 45 MPG and if I get the right one I can use the carpool lane by myself during my commute. I talked to 2Driver also about his Prius, and he helped push me over the edge.

So, here is what I ended up with, carpool plate included.... Now I need to put an NRA sticker on it and some train horns. :) I will appreciate spending $30 in fuel per week instead of $200

I have the same. 2005 with 201k on the odometer and still on the same batteries and not 1 problem with it.
Just make sure you drive at least 80mph in the fast lane.
Good luck and dont let the gay comments bother you.j/k

I hope you're not in CA, cause that single driver car pool sticker program went out the window awhile back!

Admitting you drive a Prius is worse than telling your parents you're gay.

Just playing. Like you, I commute about 70 miles round trip per day. Been looking for something other than my dually.

LOL!. True Story, one of my clients is a gay man, and he was so excited to show me his new car the other day. He was so excited for his Prius. He insisted I sit in it and test out all the controls. I had to fake for a good 15 mins how cool it was. When I went home, I felt violated!!

You might be right, but the Smart Car would have fit inside my garage with the other cars and boat

Haven't tried that, but I will check it out - I think it has a whopping 76 hp

Baby blue metalic colour would have pushed it over the top:p

Agreed - I wasn't too picky on the color, but there were some blue and light green ones listed for sale that I decided to skip over.

Look at my location - I live in AZ and they still have the carpool plate program, but it's limited to only 10,000 plates so they are hard to get.

How do you break the news to your family and friends?

No news to break, what's gay about an inexpensive car that gets 45 MPG and saves me 40 minutes of driving time every day???

Ha ha - I never said it was a cool car.;)

You bought a car that makes sense to you and that is all that matters.

That would have to be a real Cobra to offset the Prius. :).

The Prius carpool plate is worth its weight in gold, and the 50mpg is a nice fridge benefit, and so is being able to say its my wife's car not mine :)

Scottsdale to Parker dam 3.5 gallons of regular.

Great thing about hybrids using Toyota Technology (includes Fords) - they last forever, with very little maintenance beyond oil changes.

Brake pads pads and rotors last a LONG time due to regen braking.
Under normal conditions, the friction brakes are used very little at all.
The transmission is a simple planetary gearset with very few moving parts and no torque converter or wear parts like clutches.

And battery failure rates are statistically insignificant - less that 1 in 40,000...and they're relatively cheap - compared to an engine or tranny rebuild - and actually quite easy to replace.

Drive it like you stole it...that's how I drive MY WIFE's Prius.
The electronics won't let you push things beyond their limits.

We once drove non-stop from Scottsdate to Long Beach.
It was late on a Sunday night, averaged 79 mph and got 45 mpg.
Not too shabby...we average around 45 overall in mixed commuting.

Had one tank that was only 38 mpg, hauling ass thru traffic on the way to Vegas with 4 people and luggage aboard.

True, I forgot to say that with my 201k odometer I have never done the brakes.

It's real fiberglass and has 5x the horsepower of the Prius. :)

I don't care what the image is, all I know is that after about 200 miles, the gas gauge still shows a full tank and I won't be sitting in traffic during rush hour.
