Because we get distracted by all the other cool stuff to see... like to get off the boat and hike around... drink, party and take in the surroundings too much so we have to stay put!

Ah gotcha. Like you said you can't go wrong with any of it.

I hit the San Juan for the first time and I think my next trip I will spend 2 or 3 days up there... I only saw about 3-4 boats beached up there and it was Memorial day weekend.

One of the fingers in the Escalante.
From Wahweep to the Escalante in a toon is an ALL DAY adventure, with out a doubt it is worth your time. But only being there 3-4 days Face and West canyons will give you a nice look at the place and you could spend a couple days doing that if you take your time to take in the scenery. Whatever you do you will not be disappointed.

where is that canyon picture from?

Why did it take that long?

Took us about 20 min a couple weeks ago lol

NO Doubt that would be a great way to do Powell! He said hes in a pontoon though and in my experience, the party starts on a pontoon boat as soon as it hits the water and trying to keep your crew focused on a destination at Powell in a pontoon is like hearding cats!

If I run into you on Powell, I will fire up the grill and feed you burgers and wings and you can show me tripple digits in your cat!

I have done the run in a Pontoon once before and it is a very different experience. I kept saying huh never seen that before lol.

That is actually my friends boat I have a Nordic Flame but i still want the burger.

I looked up my track in Escalente... My average speed was 3.1 mph and we spent 3 hours and 15 minutes exploring before we threw the hook at the end of escalente, broke out paddleboards and spent the night.... Obviously we hardly can get anywhere with our approach, so take my advise with that in mind!

What was really cool at Escalente is that we thought we were at the end, but we paddle boarded through the reeds and 6 inches of water. Then it opened back up again and we paddled another 2 miles up the canyon!

I used GAIA GPS on my Iphone last month. I posted a track and a waypoint earlier in this thread if you want to check out how that app logs the data.... I hardly use my Garmin chartplotter anymore, just as a back up to GAIA....

I just downloaded GAIA and looking at Powell there is a line from south to north, is that the bouys? Or best route with deeper water? its far from straight

That is the center line and where the traditional red/green nav bouys will be placed and if you follow those buoys you will be fine. Pair of Binoculars isnt a bad idea if you lose sight of the buoys. Generally the whole place is deep AF, like 150-300 feet deep. Wear your polarized glasses and read the water. The main channel is pretty straight forward and after that in the side channels you got to just play the game by being attentive. Bring a spare prop for sure.

On the way back to Wahweep I have missed the cut turn off and ended up at Antelope a few times when I was green. Just pretend that was the plan all along and follow Antelope the long way back to Wahweep.

ITS F'ING HUGE, you wont get it till you get it!

Looks like we ended up in the same spot We made it to the end of Wetherill on the skis.
Can Gaia download and save sattelite images for off line use?

Yes, I can down load maps easily with GAIA, but I pay for the annual GAIA subscription.. not sure if thats what makes it easy. I used to use MotionX but I am GAIA now. I never paid for MotionX so it wouldn't be fair for me to compare the two...

I'll second this. Gaia is great. I use it mainly for backpacking and hiking, but it could work well for this kind of adventuring too.

You can use your phone, select the map (i think theres 4-6 different types), and from there you can select which areas you want to download to your phones memory. I typically grab Topo maps since i'm hiking.

Thats awesome. Lunatic fringe and I were discussing the express cruiser route. seems like the perfect way to see the back country and get around. I think you are up by me in CC, if so we have to chat over a beer. We do alot of back country stuff, be good to swap stories. Was considering a earthcruiser/roamer before covid hit, now not so sure .

Of all the great threads on RDP, I love all of the “my first time going to Powell” threads the most! I love Powell and can’t wait to hear the trip report from your trip @riverroyal

Enjoy your trip, we have been houseboating up there for 20 years, this looks like our last year on our boat (7-22/7-31) as I am going to sell her at the end of this summer. Kids with kids and sports ect.. is making it a bit harder to pull off a trip. Since this is a boating site and the peeps here are boaters, Lake Powell is a MUST do boaters paradise.

Several of you have mentioned a Stan Jones Map. I've found it online on a couple of sites, but is it readily available at say a West Marine or local shop in Page? GPS I have covered, VHF radio will be purchased. We are going to pick a couple of "Must See" points but also want to relax and enjoy. Don't want to feel like a tour boat.

They are easy to find. I would suggest the plastic coated one.

Big fires burning on top of Grand Canyon, flew up to Powell for the day yesterday. Added about 15mins to our flight home to divert around all the smoke.

I'm a novice to that region and am curious what burns there.... assume there's enough dry brush? Seems like entire area is all rock? Great picture.

The fire is on the north rim of the canyon. The plateau has one of the largest stands of ponderosa pine in the country along with oak and juniper.

Thanks. No campfires zone for sure and I guess they get monsoons with lightening strikes as well eh.

What are the pros and cons of houseboats vs staying at a resort?

Houseboats are a ton of work and time. But a lot of fun to be out on the lake for an extended period. Resort is simpler and less work. Both have advantages

how long is the run from wahweep? Like 1.5hrs or so?

how fast are you going to go and what type of range do you have on your 150 gallons at 4000 feet elevation? Can you maintain that speed through 1-3 chop and Are you willing to just pin it straight down the main channel to get there?

someone else said 70 miles to the mouth of escalante from wahweep. If you can do 70 mph I would guess 1.5 hours without any outliers. You can easily spend a couple hours in the escalente arm once you get there.

Under no circumstances will I pass dangling rope without fuel regardless of how much I have. You might as well rename your boat and slap a new name on it as you pass dangling rope... 30 minutes to get in and out of dangling rope.

Entrance to the Escalante Is 70 miles from wahweep, and that just starts your tour. You can spend all day easy cruising all the fingers in there.
70 miles. Good info
At 35 mph with a gas stop on the toon we will most likely skip this sight.
Thats 3 hours each way.
But you never know! Leave at sunrise be there by 9am....

That’s 3 hours never coming off plane and having everyone take salt pills to never stop to piss etc... like being on the I-10 freeway from upland to Blythe with no stops. In all practicality, probability closer to 5 hours with some stops to swim and cool off and eat a bite etc...

Then you get to decide if you want to spend 3-5 more hours on the road each way to bullfrog/height.... bull frog is the Utah people launch! The only way for the flatlanders from AZ-CA to get up the lake practically is the houseboat type deal or camp etc to take a couple days and work you way up there.

Defiant house hotel? At bullfrog.
Or is the north end a locals only thing?
Some flat landers are not bad. Ha.
Maybe i should get a faster boat

Last year my ATT cell had horrible coverage. I lost coverage a few miles from Wawheap and never got it again all the way to dangling rope.
Keep in mine your ship to shore hand held will only go about a couple miles at best, and less if you don’t have line of sight. Also it’s handy to take Binos
All the up lake places are super cool and we have spent a week in Rock creek and Escalante. You just have to figure if it’s worth motoring for 6 non-stop hours r/ t to get there, especially if you aren’t running with another boat.
its not ATT it all the carriers.

a cell phone is a radio device and no cell carrier can get RF into all those canyons. or even up the main body of the lake for that matter.

all the carriers use a repeater thats on top of Navajo Mtn. if you can see the peak you have coverage. but because all cell traffic on the lake uses that single tower location, you can have "bars" yet not be able to connect due to traffic limitations.

even sat phones can be problematic in some of those narrow slot canyons.

you will have cell coverage near the marinas.
