Thinking about going over to the dark side.

I had a Sea Doo GTX 3 seater over 20 years ago and it was a lot of fun. I just spent the day on Lake Topaz and my friend's resort and thought I'd pick up a cheap PWC around $5K just to buzz around a little and get wet.

Found a 2001 GTX with 100 hours on it for $4500 with trailer. Looks to be in good condition.

Is 100 hours a lot? What should I look for? I think these things are pretty basic so not a whole lot to go wrong with them?

Thats a lot of $ for that ski.... its also current in season.

You can buy a low hour spark for that...or for a few grand more something a lot newer.

100 hours depends on the driver....if they run it pinned out etc... you'll be buying a motor at some point which run around 1k-1.5k online...plus your time. I wouldn't give that for it...better deals to be found. A used older trailer like that is 500-750$ on craigslist/marketplace. An almost new one is like 1000-1500$ for a single.

I would keep looking. That’s an older ski and you will prolly be looking at engine issues sooner then later.

one problem with older skiis is a lack of available parts for them. Does the mfg. and/or after market still produce repair parts for that yr/model? There quite a bit of electronics that can and will fail at some point and can be a real pain in the azz to repair.

Bunch of Years ago on a whim I bought a pair of seadoo wave runners (94 /97) on a trailer for $1500.00 I new absolutely nuthin about them. I learned alot and especially how much I hated being bent over working in a very confined space down inside those damn things. They were fun, when they ran. Nothing like buying used electronics for to much $$$ off the internet hoping they were ligit working parts.
If your going to do it, spend the $$$ and buy a nice well cared for machine and ENJOY your experience rather then despise it in the end being frugal. Good luck.

Had 2 Kawasaki 440 standups in the 80's, bought 1, few weeks later the wife said "We're buying another". They were $2,500 new OTD. I have no idea how many hours we put on them, but they got used and abused. Sank them more than once, tow to the nearest beach, pull the plugs, crank it over for 30 seconds, put the plugs back in and away you went. Sold them to a friend 10 years later and he he ran the hell out of them as well. Neither one of us had any problems with them. Bought a new 2009 Seedoo RXTis that the upper part of the hull and seat had suspension. First time the wife fell off the back, I heard "We're buying another". Price was 10k each over the Kawa'a. Had them 10 years and only put 40 hours on them. They were a blast to ride and great for restaurant running. Dock them anywhere and the suspension was amazing. You could ride them all day at speed in crappy water without being beat to death. 255hp moved them along well. Only issue was, being 70, just too much hassle launching and retrieving. Was sitting at a bar talking to one of the locals and Seedoo's came up. Said I was thinking about selling ours. He asked how much, I said $17,500 for the pair and trailer. He said, I'll take them, can I pick them up next weekend? My wife and I both were sad to see them go.

I sold my low hour garaged Waverunner 760 and Waveblaster 700 in June of 2020, I had used them the year before on a weeklong Naci trip after spending time going thru both and getting in top shape, Carb overhauls, oil injection flush..

In 2019 Yamaha no longer sold a few parts I needed for the 1996 Waverunner, like the very important fuel and oil filler hoses that were broken open. Found the oil hose on Ebay, jerry rigged the fuel hose with plumbing parts, but the flow was restricted... so filling with gas took extra time.

On the last day of the Naci trip the Waveblaster was dead, no crank. Both skis had new Odyssey batteries so it had quit charging. After getting it home, charging the battery and remaking all the connections by unplugging and replugging, it was again charging?

Add in the 2 strokes are restricted where you can use them.

Bottom line, the old ski's were fun, just no longer practical. New skis are HUGE and expensive so it's another level of commitment to own a few.

This Waveblaster was used in the movie "the Underclassman" with Nick Cannon, the stunt men cracked the hull jumping it at Long Beach marine stadium.

They’re fun for about 5 minutes, then they’re boring pieces of equipment for transportation. Stand ups are always fun…and X2s and the old Yamaha blasters.

I have a Honda F12X turbo 3 seater that was given to me…only runs about 60-62, but that’s plenty. I have fun on it for the first few minutes, then hand it off to the kid for rest of the day.

My wife’s 3 seater Yamaha FX1000 Waverunner also does about 62. That’s plenty fast for her and the grandkids. Looks like ethanol free gas is the way to go. Particularly for end of the season storage.

That seems like a lot for that ski. We have some older seadoos and it seems like we're always working on them. I'm currently looking for a couple 4 strokes, because I'm tired of working on old 2 strokes.

They are nice to have, especially when you have kids. We just got home from the river and we didn't bother putting the boat in because it was so hot. It was nice to blast around on the seadoo for 10-15min, throw them back on the dock, and go back in the house.

If you're gonna stick with the 3 seater GTX of that era I'd steer clear of the DI's and go with the carb'd models. I maintain a set of the DI's for my mom. They run well and are really good on fuel consumption but unless you know someone with the proper computer they are a PITA when troubleshooting.

I have not owned a Ski since the early 90's. I am seriously looking at the Kawi 310 Ultra. 310 HP and will run 74 with the speed limiter removed. Crazy tech in the new ones.

Look for an 2008 or newer. 2007-2005, have sodium filled exhaust valves that fail.
Look for a 155 hp, best engine without a super charger.

Stay away from any of the older DI models. Also if looking at 2008 or older Sea Doos with a super charger make sure the washer has been swapped out as the original washers were ceramic and known to fail and cause major damage to the internals of the motor when they fail and break apart.

Okay, I'm over the whole PWC thing!😄

I thought I might be able to get into something decent for cheap but it looks like a good one is going to be more than I want to spend on one.

Instead, I would like something like this. A little hot rod boat to mess around with. Way more useful than a PWC. This one is local to me so I'm going to go check it out.

The Seadoo's with the IBR are really nice for low speed maneuvering. Right hand lever is throttle, left is neutral/brake. At speed. the brake will almost throw you off the ski. It will turn in its own length at idle.
