August 18 2022 - Lake Elsinore is closed effective immediately for all recreational uses including boating, fishing, kayaking, and swimming until further notice due to multiple toxins produced by the recent Algae bloom affecting the water's quality and shoreline. It is highly recommended that visitors do not enter or swim in the water as exposure to toxic algae can cause rashes, skin or eye irritation, allergic reactions or gastrointestinal problems, and can also be fatal to dogs.

Damn! I really wanted to coat my bote with green split pea soup and pick up some fresh brain eating ear worms.

I saw a new orange 28’ Eliminator Fun Deck being towed by a Eliminator shop truck yesterday in Elsinore yesterday. Looks like they didn’t get a test drive in.

When did it turn green? I remember it being so blue there when I was a kid. But that was 25 years ago.

The only time I’ve seen it blue was in the early 90s when there was so much rain Canyon Lake was letting water out to keep their lake from overflowing and flooding streets.
The fishing was epic for a couple years after.
The airport was flooded, there were water front homes and business along the west side that had gotten too comfortable with the lower water levels and had cars parked down there, stacks of building materials and random junk that all became under water in less than a month or so.
There was a nursery on the east side that had large wooden pots with large trees in them.
All underwater. Looked like a little slice of Louisiana swamp, and the lunkers hung out there😉

I remember taking delivery of my first boat there in Spring of '84 and it was flooded then. You could see houses underwater and power poles that went down into the lake when it flowed Sout to engulf the airport. An interesting read below that also talks of all the federal money spent to clean up the lake and prevent algae blooms. Also says it was dry for most of the 50's. Global warming?

When the conditions are right, lake Elsinore was ok. Obliviously not in an algae bloom, but remember, this is California.

You must be color blind. It was already nasty and green when we lived there in 85. Shoot, we were a block away and most of the time we would tow to Perris to boat. “Pre being filled with baby diapers”

I remember the flood well, even though I was young. All the lakefront “yards” were in the water and coming up close to the houses. It was a trip to see chain link fences leading into the water where they disappeared.

Getting past the quagga muscle nazi inspection is the hardest part. I used to go every Wednesday. Last few times 1 drop of water from the outdrive and sent packing. Bitch will make you lower it until it almost touches the pavement. Then tell you that they have found quaggas in the lake but were half dead and incapable of breeding.

Way way back I learned to ski in that suspicious pea-soup looking stuff. I'm living proof you can inhale gallons of that horrible green shit and survive - I'm 80 now. First time we went there we thought the beach on the east end was all white sand - turned out it was bleached fish bones.

Years ago we skied after one of the many fish die events. The wind blew all the dead floating fish to one end of the lake where you would hear them knocking on your board as you skied over them. Always hated falling in that water.

Of Smellsomore? It's kinna like a far girl...

Looks good from far, but far good! 😁

I can think of one summer in high school, my dad woke me up one weekend and asked if I wanted to go take the skis to the lake, of course I jumped at it.

We get down there and it’s like pea soup and smells awful, dead carp floating, like hundreds if not thousands. It was the only time I never fell, not once.

I Worked for Jerry and Nick back in early 2000s--Nothing but respect for both of them. Sold my Hallett years ago but I still "listen in" to you guys now and again. Dave was kind enough to even publish a couple of my stories quite a few years ago on here. Nothing beats boating though--golf tries, but fails miserably. LOL

I've lived in Elsinore for a period of time and have boated there on and off my entire life. The lake is basically unusable in the late summer and fall. I haven't been on it since about May 2019, but go every new years day for the Weekend Paradise show. It seems like the water is getting worse and worse thru the summer months and thats making it hard to recover thru the winter, lack of rain obviously not helping. It's a shame but I still ain't scared of boating or swimming in it between about Feb-june.

I was there a few times this winter early spring. At that time, the water looks like any other SOCAL lake. A murky brown. Haven’t been there late summer in years.

I remember taking my X2 there ( first ride ) one time around 89-90"

The lake was Gatorade green. I crashed and swallowed a big huge gulp of water. I came back to the truck and my buddy told me " dude you better take a shot of tequila or you are going to get sick "

I was 19 and didn't even drink but still took a big slug of Cuervo 🤣 You have to love the quick medical advice from a bunch or 17-19 year olds.

First and last time I drank Jose and it was nasty and not much better than the green lake water.

Yeah, most SoCal lakes are stagnant water. The puddle has a bit of flow through it, but not enough to keep it clean.

Silverwood is the best option for halfway decent water.

Pyramid is IMO the cleanest of the local lakes. But like @NicPaus said you better have your shit tight and dry for the inspection lady lol.

Also some free advice, in CA they have a system that tags your boat if you’ve been in an infested (muscle) lake. 2 week quarantine so plan accordingly if you’re headed to Naci etc.

Anyone boat in Diamond Valley? I see a launch ramp from the aerial shot. Have friends that live right by it in the new construction homes. Never hear about it.

Diamond Valley is sad. They first pitched it to us locals as a water sports paradise in order for us to vote for the increased taxes to build it. The closer you were to it, the more your property values would go up. I am 15-20 minutes from the ramp.

Then politics got involved. I guy that was a classmate of mine at UCR in the 80's was in charge of the project. He started circulating information that if you allow human contact with the lake that it could not be used for drinking water. Hmmm....Tahoe, Havasu, Mead, Powell, I've been in all of them and the water is just fine! The guy is also an avid bass fisherman and personally wanted it to become a premier bass fishing destination. He hates boats like mine as well as all watersports because they harsh his mellow while fishing.

He got his way and it is a no contact lake. They even built a pool so you can swim there. Also, you have to go through their specific inspection to make sure you have a low emission engine and quiet exhaust. It is a beautiful lake but we all got taken for a ride and can't play in it.

Sucks with Elsinore being closed for the time being. Everyone is going to Perris I think. Left super late yesterday and got denied to use the lake. Said it was full capacity at 5pm. Gay

Living there most of my life, I'm usually a big defender of the lake when everyone talks trash about it....Unfortunately, it is real bad this year. We boat on the lake Spring through July, sometimes into August but the water is way too bad this year. The water is almost always pretty nasty by August but it is the worst I have seen it in a long time. I live about a mile from the launch ramp so it's a great place to go spend a few hours then come home to bbq.
We booked our Labor Day weekend at Lake Mohave and won't be putting the boat back in Elsinore until we get enough rain to make it worth doing. The city spends a ton of money trying to keep the lake usable. Pumping water and air into it and stocking it with fish.

I drove down from Idaho to fish DV with my son and my Dad a few years back and caught some great fish. A lot of BS to go through to launch, though.

the reasoning is a bit different though with those being just due to lack of water flow and heat whereas SMELLsimore has a LOT to do with crap runoff and being a natural lake, not much way to get a lot of the water out to freshen it up and definitely not much of anything to re-fill the lake either.

Ironic screen name 🙂.
I’ve had a lot of good times at Elsinore. And ear infections. 😂
