1977 to 2008. Ironically enough my boat was brand new the year of the first photo.

Lake Austin is a pretty place. In 1978 I started the Powerboat Magazine "Boat of the Year" award program. That first year a 17-foot Hammond family bowrider was selected as "Boat of the Year" and it caused quite a bit of controversy in the industry. It was Bob Hammond's (the former owner/founder of Glastron Boat Company) first year in business with his new company, Hammond Boats. Went to Bob's home located on Lake Austin to do the photo shoot for the magazine. Spent the day cruising the lake -- great hospitality and fun!

That bridge and area looks familar. Back in mid seventies we had a drag boat race held there. That was a great event. We launched at that ramp on the right side of the bridge and the start lights were at what is the bottom of the picture.
Great time.

Well that would be the wrong bridge and wrong lake..
The bridge in the photo is on Lake Austin, and was not
there in the mid 70's.. The races were held on Town Lake
( next lake down the river ) but still in Austin.. Yes they
were a great event..

aw yes lake austin, dropped the hondo in there once and made some passes in front of the golf course just to fuck with some folks some pretty kick ass houses on that lake as well :skull it was hallarious this year because lake travis got so low that all the public ramps were closed so there was a shit ton of people trying to boat on that tiny little lake suprised there weren't more accidents than there were.

Thats the truth. On the north end of the lake there is a 13 million dollar house for sale and next door is a guy that lives in a double wide.

Cool pics... I have a few old dragboat pics from Town Lake in the mid 70's.... I'll have to get 'em posted up.

For some of the years they also ran a marathon circle race on
Town Lake as part of Aqua Fest. This photo is Joe Fielder in his Glastron Molinari with twin Mercurys from 1969

Your taxing my memory now, but what I recall was a 250 mile
marathon. The course was on the lower end of Town lake
by Festival Beach with a turn in that area just south of
Festival Beach and then back up past the IH35 bridge to
a second turn in that area between the IH35 Bridge and
the Congress Ave bridge. The sound from all those open
stack boats running up and down river and the echo off of
the bridges made some beautiful music to my ears, but
the East Austin community did not share my enthusiasm.
