Good morning Inmates,
'
I will soon begin a hunt for a new member to our family in the next few months, wanted to get any insight on local breeders in So Cal. If anyone has any personal experience with any, it would be appreciated. My preference is to get the lab as a puppy, I've never adopted a Lab or rescued one, but its never been of interest of me to get one already months old. Looking for a Chocolate lab, but any color really is considered.

Thanks to All!

No personal experience with them but have met a few dogs from calizonalabs. We looked into them and most likely would have gotten one from them, but we ended up fostering and eventually adopting one the fosters.

I love labs.... Have a Black Lab that exceeds all my expectations...

However being a life time lab owner ( and other breeds).... I do not like chocolate labs. Black & Yellow yes. Just about every problem lab that I have been exposed to, happened to be Chocolate.

I am not saying all Chocolate labs are bad, just saying you have a higher chance of not getting the best lab possible.

Thats just my experience, I would not take a Chocolate lab if it was given to me. But thats me and my experience.

Yellow Labs are my first choice.
Black Labs are my second choice...

BTW, a buddy of mine breed labs for over 20 years. When he stopped, he had a 7 year waiting list, his pups went for $5K. The key Sire was Willie, the largest lab I have ever seen in my life. Makes Rotty's look small. But Willie lived 20 years... No shit... One hell of a dog.

I used to know a Marine in San Diego that breed some amazing labs, need to dig up his number for you. Great dogs for the money. But if you willing to drive to Kansas, my neighbor has breeder down there, that sells 1 year old gun dog trained labs for about $1600 as of a few years ago. I can get his number if you want... Thats a damn good lab. Bit on the smaller size (which I prefer), but very intelligent and loving.

Not in CA or AZ but give Brads dogs a look at Driftcreeklabradors.com. We have a 4 year old black. Awesome dogs. He’s in Oregon.

I got a chocolate from Thornwood Labs in Oregon they brought them down to the Valencia area. They are English labs and very good dogs.

I'm sorry, but your opinion is 100% false. :D

It's the yellow ones that are gonzo. Best lab I ever had was a chocolate. That dog would retrieve anything and would take hand signals with zero training. Super mellow when she wasn't on the retrieve.

The key is breeding. If you want a gun dog, get one bred for sporting. If you want a house lab to play with the kiddos, get one that was bred for that.

Spend some time talking to owners of the pups out of the pair the breeder is using. They'll know the real dope.

I never said that all Choco Labs are bad... I have seen great Choco Labs... but of the 9-10 messed up labs I have seen in my life, 80% of them where choco....

Dont make me name names... Cause I go on for days about my neighbor 2 doors over, with the dummest Choco Lab on the planet. I have lived next to it for 10 years. Her name is Macy, and just dumb. They also own a great dane... I am not a great dane fan, but thats a damn good great dane, who is trained quite well.. So we cant say its 100% the owners, cause one dog turned out great and the other is worthless. I can keep going, but wont.

I've owned both yellow and Black... Yellow seems to be better and easier to train for me.... I was thinking chocolate just to change it up, I've seen online that they even have silvegray as well, but I want to stick to more traditional colors. Kansas is a bit far for a dog, I love them, but I have my limits on costs and travel.

Here's a breeder here in Wadell AZ. They do Weims & Labs. Use the AKC tool to do some research. Don't get too caught up in some of these breeders BS. A lot of them have a false sense of self importance like they're guarding the lord of the rings but you can have a piece for a price.

My dad bought his black lab female from one of these breeders for like 3k. She's a sweetie but dumber than a box of rocks. I paid 1k for Duke from a lady living in bullhead out of a trailer on a dirt lot and this dog is on point. Hunts birds, well behaved, listens, easily trainable and good with kids. He's only 10 months old.

Had Yellow Labs growing up.. Honestly there was no training involved, cause they where raised around other labs, and just learned. I agree that Yellows are typically the easiest. I think that it all comes from the desire to please the owner...
Regardless of the color, that the dogs wants to please, then they practically train themselves.

Now a dog with an independent streak, can make life a bit more challenging..

Fortunately for me. My Black lab, I just look at her side ways, and she thinks shes going to die. I dont even raise my voice and she drops. Seriously, just give her a dissappointed look, and her world just fell apart.

I potty trained her in one day. Leash trained her in 15 minutes. Sit/Stay/Come/Lay/Shake... had all that down before she was 16 weeks old.

But thats what I expect when you get lab... thats why they are one of the most popular breeds. They just get it, make your life easy.

The silver gray are mixed with Weimaraner's. I have had all three color Labs and had two litters with a Yellow/White male/Todd and a brown female/Brandy. Great dogs but I haven't had another since getting a Weim in 2002. Weims are like labs but smarter, less inbreed problems and they dont shed as bad. My Weims have been living for 14+ years. Labs seem to be lucky to make it to 12.

We have been looking too for a yellow/white/silver so I will follow this thread. We almost bought a Silver lab pup a few weeks ago but decided we wanted a Female for sure and leaning toward an English lab just for size.

We would love a family breeder where we can see the mom and dad on-site and ideally do the whole deal where the kids pick the puppy.

Not true at all. I just learned all about this
Just like a blond weenie dog we had, it's a recessive gene deal only.
"Why Is It Silver? The Silver Labs' coat can vary between silver, grey and blue tones. This variation comes from the fact that their coat is a dilution of the usual chocolate color. This color is caused by the appearance of two recessive genes rather than the usual dominant-dominant or dominant-recessive combinations.
Note that those dogs are more likely to be affected by color dilution alopecia, which is a hair loss condition in dogs which are dilute. In “Labs,” dilutes are referred to as silver, charcoal, and champagne."

I've met several of the breeders and that's how they arrived at a silver lab. It's a debated subject amongst the breeder community.

The thought of paying for a dog, let alone 5K, is astounding to me. Virtually every problem dog I've ever been around had some AKC pedigree, paperwork, cost thousands of dollars, yada, yada, yada....Best dog I ever owned was a huge long haired golden lab mix that I found ( or he found me) at a circle K. Before the chip days, I advertised and looked for his owner to no avail. Best, most loyal dog ever. My other two dogs were strays as well, all great pets.

Every dog I've had has been a rescue adoption. They're most loyal and often less health issues too

I have a yellow lab that we got lucky and stumbled into with some old high school friends. Sister went by there to check out their daycare and just had puppies. My wife wanted a yellow female and there was only one in the litter. Dad was a chocolate and mom was a yellow. Picked her out at two weeks and brought her home at six weeks old. Obviously wasnt a professional breeder but great experience and great dog. Not papered but who cares. Best $350 ever spent after looking at labs that were $1500+.

Daisy has been the best dog we have ever had from day one. She is always with one of us and rarely left alone. She literally goes everywhere with us. I think how a dog is brought up and the attention and time you spend with them depends on how they are. She is now 5 years old and to this day never has messed up or tore up anything. Been an amazing protective dog with the family.

I'm also a lifetime Lab owner. But I'm done after this. When my 11 year old Boy decides to check out, I'm good.

To add to your color vs obedience convo, I'd have to agree. My Folks have had 2 Chocolates they got rid of. I've had 3 black, and now yellow. Current is definitely the most obedient and well mannered. He didn't really tear shit up as a puppy either like my black ones did.

If a gun dog is to be considered, just know they carry alot more anxiety issues than normal, which leads to more destruction. So set up your environment accordingly. But to watch a gun dog in action is a very special treat.

I have to agree with you. Our family has had many labs over the years. We both had black and yellow labs. Black labs were the better of the two. We both loved our yellow labs but the black ones were the better all around dog. Never had a chocolate lab but everyone I’ve know that have said they were outstanding dogs.

I started with Golden Retrievers and then a black lab found us and stayed for 15 years. Now we look for Golden Lab mixes. We currently have two with zero health issues and great personalities.

My Christmas present from my wife this year was a Chocolate Lab puppy, the breeder was in Moreno Valley. If anyone wants contact information feel free to PM me. She breeds both Yellow and Chocolate. Our pups parents were both "English" but she's long and lean like an "American".

Over the years we've had Yellows, Blacks and now a Chocolate. I can't say I've noticed any unique personality characteristics in one versus another. All have been great fun loving friends to all, mischievous at times, and fast learners.

Just because a dog is an AKC registered pure breed dog is not a guarantee of quality. Purebred dogs are only as good as the genepools, dedication, integrity, workethic, experience, and skill of the breeder/s involved in the breeding program. Just like human breeding! lol

Quality breeding programs are priceless and never focused on volume or money.

I have a silver lab. Got her from a breeder in AZ. Great dog. Very smart. I didn’t know they were eating machines. She loves to swim in the pool. Her name is STELLA.
