My dad and I are both picking up some new 500excs tomorrow and setting a goal to be able to finish this ride at the end of year. Curious if anyone on here has gone and what’s your experience on the ride been

I did it in 2018. Similar goal. Built some FE 501’s and went for it. Finished it. Started with 560 ‘ish and finished around 350 ‘ish. I was drinking at the banquet when they did all the stats, so don’t hold me to hard to it. [emoji3] Super fun, glad to answer any questions you might have.

They provide all the info on the flyer for both Barstow & Vegas. The logistics are dialed, real easy for the participants. 2018 was the 35th anniversary of the ride. If you are going to Lancaster / Palmdale from a distance they have hotels for all budgets reserved for the riders as well. Guys came from all over the globe with all kinds of bikes. The oldest was some early 60s vintage getter, all the way to a brand new stock 450L. Youngest kid was 15, oldest rider was early 80s... Spain, Canada, New Zealand, Germany and some other countries were repping. Bike prep is the biggest deal. And keep moving with minimal rest and you will be good. And you need a slightly larger capacity tank or you will need to carry some fuel on the 500 EXC. Also, run the mousse tire inserts. Not tubliss and no way tubes. Not even the HD kind. Some dude got 5 flats lol!

There's lot of threads on the D-37 board, or Thumpertalk to get you started. Leave as early as possible each day, ride with people of similar ability, otherwise if you're fast and riding with slow friends it's two real long days and you run the risk of not finishing.

I’d like to do this ride this year. I’ve done Barstow to Laughlin on my Dual Sport Husky thru the Mohave Trail which was a blast.

I rode the event with my dad(Who is in his 70's) in 2017, hoping we can ride it together this year. The ride was a blast for me. My dad had small get off on day one, which caused him to stop on day two at Baker, so I continued on solo. We did "easy ways" and the only hard route I did was the last stretch through Red Rock Canyon. I did not find the ride to be technically difficult, I do know some "hard ways" can be a little tougher. I think that everyone who is at least a decent rider can do the event, time can become a premium if you have any issues, so I would suggest not to spend too much time sight seeing. We had to fix two flats on day one, but still made it to Barstow in daylight.

Logistics of getting bikes to Palmdale, and then back from Vegas is the toughest part for many, having someone in a chase truck is a good option. Hotels in Barstow fill quickly, so book as soon as you can.

You do not have to be an expert level rider for this ride. The easy way routes were ridden by guys on large adventure bikes. The only thing I would say is that if you don't enjoy riding int he sand, you won't like this ride.

Is this event usually schedule on the Thanksgiving weekend? Let's make RDP team. I want to try on Husq TE250.
Yes, starts on the Friday after Thanksgiving in Palmdale, ends in Las Vegas the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

I've done the Barstow to Vegas part 3 times only because my back couldn't handle two days of that type of riding. We always did the hard loops and every time we got to the finish right as the sun went down. I don't know anything about the easy trails but id imagine its all fire roads.

IF you chose to do the hard trails just know you will have to be moving at a pretty good pace to make it at a decent time. So prep your bikes and be ready to change a flat at the very least. There is LOTS OF ROCKS and at times you are a distance away from anything... and be careful of rain ruts! The last year I did it my day was almost cut short first thing in the morning because of a massive rain rut/riding into the morning sun/dust.

I was on a 450exc

I know a little about this event. :p
I've done the ride since 2000 and been the Coordinator for 10 years or so. Damn ride gets in your blood. We got a 5 year permit last year, finally, so we're good for a while!
This ride is going to have some surprises this year, but nothing too difficult if you do the easy ways. The hard ways are more like a good days riding but again, we don't want to break you or your bike so mostly hard ways are just longer.
There's nothing like riding your dirt bike(plated) down the strip for a picture under the Welcome to Las Vegas sign.
I'll post up more as we get closer but you should get your room at the Ramada today, like, today for Friday after Thanksgiving. You can always cancel but you want to be at that hotel after day 1.
Give me a call for any details or insights, I could write for days on this ride but I have to scoot right now. Gimme a call, 562 244 0244

One step closer to the ride today. After shopping around everywhere my dad and I bought two 500exc from Tom at Palmdale Supercycles. Not only was he awesome to work with he had the best price and host the start of the ride, so it was perfect. My dads super excited about riding again and motivated to get ready for the ride. his maiden voyage is tomorrow to the boat races then the desert bar, so keep and eye out for him if your over there haha

The Ramada is "the hotel" in barstow, and really the only one that fills up. IF you book online, make sure you call the hotel to ensure you have a room and they did not double book you! This happened to me a couple of years back. I got a room there via expedia or one of those online sites. MONTHS went by and like a few weeks before the ride I get a call from the hotel in Barstow and they say "oh btw we double booked you, you dont have a room sooooooooooooooooo good luck"

Its a fun ride though, I wish I had someone to ride with I'd be into doing it again. All of my buds sold off their bikes are are giant v's now.

Keith,
Other than tradition is there a specific reason LAB2V is held the day after Thanksgiving? For most off-roading families that is a week / weekend spent camping & riding wherever it may be. I know quite a few guys who have wanted to make the ride but can't blow off the family tradition to go ride without them. Just curious & have always been about the scheduling of LAB2V. Thx

Tradition is the only reason we keep it the Thanksgiving weekend. Always start on Friday after Turkey. Scott Cox told me a few years ago we could easily get this event to 1000 riders. I almost choked him! Our volunteer staffing model is about at their limits with 600 riders. We're usually just under that. Another issue is our footprint. I have to deal with 4 BLM field offices in 2 states, the State Lands Commission and the Forest service. All have their own stips and requirements. It takes me over a year to secure all the permits. last year we paid approx 20k in fees for 2018's run.
So, the self limiting logistics helps us keep the dust down, the numbers manageable and below the tree huggers radar. This is truly a ride that wont go on forever. The simple urban sprawl prevents the B2V race from returning. The closest you can get to Vegas in the dirt is 26 miles, that number will increase as the metropolis continues to build.

Get your room at the Ramada now, today. Next best is Quality Inn, across the street from the Ramada. I also like the California Inn since it's the same side of the street as the Ramada.
I encourage you to immerse yourself in the weekend, it's the friggin' Woodstock of motorcycling except it's happened 35 times! I have a legendary VIP party in my Mike Tyson suite after the reception Saturday night. I kick everyone out around 4:00 a.m.. Last year Snoop Dog was next door since he had a show at the Orleans that Saturday night. The whole floor was like a Cheech and Chong van scene. The costumery on the ladies (nsfw) was awesome!

One of the main players in Dualsport, Jim Pilon. He and a few others started the LA-B-to-V 35 years ago! He still comes every year in his yellow Jeep to sweep.

Our host hotel is the Orleans. We have secure parking and the finish is in the parking garage. Have your chase truck meet you there, get pics with the Showgirls, head up to the reception at 7:00. Party all Saturday night while you limp around, lol. If you stay Sunday we even do a bowling tourney in the Orleans lanes, about 60 entrants last year, of course money paid to winning team, it's Vegas!
