This crap doesn’t affect me but maybe the city should worry less about the homeless and free meals for kids and more for those who actually show up for work.
Just another example if you work less, you’ll be rewarded

There was a couple of reasons they gave for the strike that I heard in a news interview.
One was for more money. I’m not sure if that was the real reason, maybe for some.

The other, and it makes a bit more sense to me, is they haven’t hired to fill the vacancies of people that have retired of left since Covid. A lot of crews are working at less than 50%, my shop included. We’ve had 16 of 30 guys retire or move on. None have been replaced.

I know to some that hustle to make their living it sounds lame, but the way the city works, it has really impeded the job for a lot of crews. It makes us look worse than the “Government Worker” reputation. Believe it or not, there are some that like to work and feel that they’ve earned their money.

I started at LAX in 2018. One day we were stopped at a light and I see a housing challenged person, laying in the stoop of one of our buildings, scrolling through his smartphone. I said “that guy has a better phone than I do”. I had an old flip phone at the time.

The only way to get more …. is do less!

This isn’t just a one issue problem …. More like compounded problems that have boiled over…. From neglect and Bad Idea After bad idea….

Our Leaders are NOT Leading ….

it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets any better.

You are correct but it's also money. Heavy truck drivers start at 60k and top out at 74k in 6 years. They can't get anyone to take the job and a few have left to make way more on the outside. AB5 also fucked the city with owner operators. Resurfacing billed out 100-150 owner operators a day and starting last June they weren't allowed to use them anymore and when do you think the city realized they had a problem and starting working on it? Yup you guessed it, in May. They forced transfered guys like me into resurfacing and tripled my commute for the same pay and they still are short 100+ drivers in resurfacing and now they are short 15 drivers in special projects, so now they are short drivers in 2 divisions of street services instead of 1.

The city needs to do away with the steps and put all drivers to top step and increase everyone 10% up front and 10% over 4 years.

I've talked to a few drivers that want to vote SEIU out and get the Teamsters in. I'm not for or against that but I do know the Teamsters allowed their members to be treated like absolute dog shit by management in the 2 shops that I worked in.

I used to stay in hotel circle when i worked in San Diego. One night i called my wife while walking to dinner. Crossing the overpass towards the old Gordon Biersch i see a homeless guy. I tell my wife I’m gonna hang up. “Don’t want him to give me shit”. As i walk by i notice his iPhone and the biggest wad of cash I’ve ever seen. I’ve never given a penny to a homeless person since.

It’s shocking how much most of them make.

Do you know why there’s so many homeless in LA - because they keep giving them free shit. Free housing free food, Obama-phones, free needles, free this free that. No wonder they don’t want to work - they make more on government handouts. And I’m sure these “non-profit” groups’ leaders are taking their huge cut for “operating expenses” even before any of the “services” they are supposed to be providing even get discussed.

You know the adage - if you give away free shit they will come. Nobody's arguing that.

You don't have to guess. Find the nonprofit you are curious about, go to Guide Star or one of the other NGO tracking websites and look up their 990. The IRS 990 form will break out their income and expenses and how much goes to programs and how much goes to overhead.

My dad was a original OG for San Diego Homeless Outreach program. He is now retired from San Diego PD. He always said the Homeless had a pan handling system, they work in shifts and share the money amongst their group. He also said each could easily make $100-200 a day and that was back then when sympathy was less for them then today. I don't give them anything, money or food.

The biggest reason for the ability to openly funnel billions into this scam was the successful public rebranding of “heroin junky” to “homeless”.
Once that was accomplished it opened all sorts of doors for all sorts of departments and social cash cows to reap the cash.
Look for zero reduction of any of this mess as long as you guys keep calling junky’s homeless.

Yeah, 95% of the “mental health” issues go away when the drug addiction goes away. 4 of the other 5% are true mental health issues that were caused by drug addiction. Ridiculous.

100% this ^^^^. If major cities compensate and support their city employees(like they should) like the BS homeless programs our cities would hopefully be much nicer. Serious cuts need to be done to these BS social programs.

It’s a way of life for my stepson.
His crew steals a car in Sac, drives to the Bay (hitting Walmarts on the way for free clothes) hit whatever free programs they can, scam other junkies for dope and money, “panhandle” for a week or more, then steal another car and head back to Sac.
At least that’s how he was doing it 5 years ago. (I haven’t spoke with him since Debbie died)
If they get arrested he could not possibly care less. He’s well known in County and runs dope when he’s in jail, plus gets fed and has a bed.
“Homeless” is a misnomer applied for the sole reason of inferring that a “home” is the cure.
“All they need is a roof and a door and they will be cured!” LMFAO!
This opens doors for developers, builders, real estate, and just about every trade and lobbyist and their unions that can be imagined.
Buying hotels for junkies is the funniest shit I ever saw.
Who in the fuck thinks a junky is going to do ANYTHING other than trash and destroy the place? It’s lunacy.
95% of junkies had or have a home, they choose not to be there, or have been kicked out because they’ve destroyed every possible Avenue of family help.

The programs for drug addiction are coupled with the programs for “mental illness” and “homelessness”…it’s a trifecta payout.

Pretty simple really. When you hand out free stuff it invites more people to the area.

Homeless industrial complex.

It will never get better. It will never be solved because if it did, the money will stop flowing that is enriching all the political friends and donors.

Don’t believe me? Why does is cost near $800k per unit to house a single homeless person in LA?

That's exactly it --- no position, no service, no commission or study ever established by any governing body wants their "Cause" vanquished or successfully eliminated.
Pharmaceuticals, doctors and hospitals need the diseased and sick, Leos need law breakers, fireman need fires, the military industrial complex needs wars, it is no different with the war on drugs or the homeless.
They are all in the business of mitigating enough of any problem to justify their performance, while never performing to an extent as to make their position unnecessary.

A nickle out of every dollar makes it to the homeless, and I'm aiming high. The rest goes into politicians pockets.
A nickel out if every dollar I earn makes it to my pocket, if I'm lucky.

Ok back to LACity union strike. The coalition members voted for a strike because of an ULP, unfair labor practice. Back when negotiating a contract the city put forth a 1year contract with a cost of living raise and a bonus. They also agreed to come back to the table and negotiate proposals for little pay offsets. When the city came back to the table they said they were not gonna revisit the proposal untill next contract and declined them across the board. To top that K Bass basically said she never received anything to review. The council members and mayor are something else to say the least. Fyi sanitation said they are not working this coming Saturday. So yes trash will be behind schedule. Almost all mechanics had strikes. Fire, Police, sanitation, parks, transportation, general service etc. There were other departments as well, hell even the life guards were there. It was not business as usual for 24 hours. Imagine a multiple days strike. They cannot bring in 11,000 people to cover. Just my perspective as an LA city fire mechanic.

I don’t know if back then this was the case, but I believe now they’re given smartphones and data with the idea they can use them to job search…..good in theory

I was being sarcastic, I meant to put it in “quotation marks”. 😁

That’s what I thought too. Good in theory, yes. But what a waste in reality. 🙄
