Thats an interesting paint scheme for a race boat. Its cool showing the difference in the hull compared to the Rayson crafts. I heard that they both share the same bottom design. the Raysons a 18 foot which was a faster runner?

Here's a photo of Krazy Kanaka as a K boat. Somewhere I have a photo of it on the trailer, which is covered in orange shag carpet. I've heard that it also had a fake palm tree on the trailer tongue. She was a far out groovy boat!

I believe that the Schiada and Rayson's do share a very similar bottom.

Krazy Kanaka as a Super Stock boat.:thumbsup

I dig the super chinky oriental font of the numbers and lettering. Like an old chinese food restaurant. It's too cool.

Must've been neato back when everyones boat had it's own look...

Don Due who owned and drove the Kanaka boats, He had some Business interests in Hawaii, and sent alot of time there, So the Krazy Kanaka paint was a based on his Hawaiain theme. The SS boat held the world record for a time, and I believe was National Champion one year. The K-boat also held the record for a time. I have a friend in Seattle who said he saw it about 10 years ago. But when I contacted him last summer he said the guy had moved, abd he had lost contact with him.

Leonard Schiada worked for Rudy at Raysoncraft in the mid 50's the LP Raysoncraft is simlar to the 18' Schiada flat, but if you get them side by side you can tell they are different boats. When my dad was rigging Schiadas his stuff did not have much trouble beating the Raysoncraft of the day.

I would like share a little info on the Krazy Kanaka Hulls. Sometime in the mid to late 70s the orange SS-50 was destroyed and what was left of it sat in front of Bob Reads NW Performance boats until he closed the shop sometime in the 80s.From there I am not sure where it went.As for the yellow K-67 also mid to late 70s racing in California it lost a blade off the prop and tore the bottom out of the hull. They recovered what they could, brought it back to Bob's shop, patched the hole and it collected dust until 1982.At that point I traded a car to Bob's son who was in possesion of it. Once in my ownership I installed a mild carburated big block 427 chevy.I still have it after 29yrs.I go out and beat on it whenever I get a chance. It is still painted as it was in its record setting days.I do appreciate its place in history.I was able to spend some time with Don Due and hear his racing storys.I remain close with Bob Read and his family. If I get a chance I will post some photos and pick Bob's brain for more info.

I will try to scan some of the old black and whites that Bob Read has.He still has shirts and jackets that match paint schemes of both Kanakas that the crew wore at the races and shows.

Here's some photos I just took in the garage. I'll try to get it out in the sun to take some pictures as soon as possible. I have some photos of the boat in motion I have to scan when I get the chance.

Here's the rest of the photos I took tonight. I have headers that I run from time to time when I feel like really beating on the boat. Future plans include fuel injection and twin turbos. I have wing and single racing seat that was originally used when raced.

Thanks for the kind remarks.I built the tank to clear the wet manifolds, should have used original tank with headers the manifolds rob a lot of rpm and power. It is not an easy job to change tank just for looks.Tank holds about 28 gallons.

What's the deal with the turnbuckle on the plate that runs off to the side?

Glad that you asked that question.......I was just about to do the same!

Cool prop strut! Heard about those 'enclosed' struts but never seen one!

Does it sit on a Litchfield trailer? Litchfield brothers made their own trailers with wood steps just like that one.

Thanx for posting!

I am assuming the turnbuckle is to keep the boat from sliding to either side of the trailer. Once they are ready to launch, the turn buckle simple comes off.

Looks like it's to hold the boat centered to the trailer or something?

HotRodLs2,
You have a Great boat! Not many guys can say they have a boat the held the world record in the K-class.
I have the last Schiada that Ken Sanberg owned, Ken ran K-20 about the same time Don ran SS, in the Seattle area. I am restoring it to new condition, and will be running in Nostagia and or Vintage classes in the Northwest.
We would love to have you come out and show and or run your boat.
If you think you might be interested, pm me your contact information.

Here are some photos of the turnbuckle you guys were talking about. As you suspected it's designed to center the boat on the trailer. And the question about who built the trailer, it was built by Bob Read at Northwest Performance Boats. He also built the super stock trailer. I just got off the phone with Bob and he told me that the K boat started out as an E boat with a 354 Hemi. It never ran worth a crap so they threw a blown alcohol chev at it and started winning races in K class pretty much by accident.

if you look at the picture in post 4 with the wing, it looks like this is where the braces tied in

Sorry I did not address that question. The vertical pins on top of the transom are for the rear facing strut rod supports for the wing stand.

I found this picture and posted it on PB under Green Dragon post. Kanaka is next to the Dragon, the other boat I can tell is in the inside it is and boat that took the world record from the Kanaka, The CanAm Express, driven by George Woods.
