Should be a stellar gathering of offroad racing for weeks, the event just keeps growing, good, bad, or indifferent it’s coming and is always unique. I’ve pulled back from any involvement with a race program, I’m working all the time these days bootstrapping my new business off the ground and being extremely protective of my time, I don’t have the bandwidth to run a race program right now and am very much looking forward to just being a spectator and enjoying my time with my pals out there.

Who’s going, where ya staying, and what are you planning on doing?

Wanted to go (even have tickets) for the first weekend after Morto weekend like normal, BUT my daughter’s semester break is Jan 26th and that is our annual daddy / daughter snowboard trip to Mammoth.

The second weekend, I have an international business trip (fly Feb 3), so that is out as well.

We go for a day and check out different spots. Went into Hammertown for the first time on the last day last dear as they were shutting down. They don’t sell one day passes so we just walked in and bought a steering wheel. I’d buy a ticket to if there was a one day pass but it was $200 each. We like grabbing an early dinner at the bar down the road on the way home. A day is all I need.

I wanted to go bitd but couldn’t get anyone else to go. Now it’s such a big deal no way.
Besides now the coverage is SO good watching on tv makes more sense.
If my group made a big deal of it I might go.

Trying to talk some friends into doing this same plan! Like to take my son(14 year old) and show him the racing and parts of JV.
Would be great to meet up with some of you!

I'm planning on it. I'll be Outcoled's bad navigator. Staying at the camp next to Laser Town. Pricing sure went way up.

We park on the dry lakebed before Hammer town to avoid the traffic and drive the SXS to the challenging spots on the race course. I’m not sure what day we’re going but we’re flexible if someone picks a day.

The past Moto events have been crazy, watched part of the live stream last night but didn't see the track layout for motos, class 11 loop looks like its going to be fun to watch/race. They start breaking down the tracks at 1:12 into the video

This appears to be our year.
Planning to leave here the 25th, roll in early afternoon the 26th.
We are staying at the Whiteworks Desert H.Q.

One more big blast of weather coming today, bottom fell outta the barometer about an hour ago, wind is blowing like a mofo.
I would like to be able to load up and prep for the trip south without wearing foul weather gear, dammit.

Race car isn’t ready and not that we tried hard. No real reason to beat up the car for an organization we won’t benefit from. Was just going to use the opportunity to test & tune. Pulled the plug on the deal last minute. Sorta bummed as it’s a wild event.

Like many events these days the promoters have become too greedy. Passing on this.

Oh, I don't know. It seems like too many people are assembled in one place, so it's obviously perceived by many as a value. When compared to some other types of sporting & entertainment events, it seems underpriced. All that said, it's not my cup of tea.

I don't think it's worth a free admission price, let alone $200.

If anyone wants to hang out with me and FBT you’re welcome to apply and go through the vetting process. Feel free to PM me for your application and background check authorization form. If you currently hold security clearances that’s a plus. If your looking to howl at the moon all night and eat dirt for a week please head directly to the lake bed and we’ll see ya when we see ya😂

In the early days of the internet forum world, Pirate4x4 was my home. Day dreaming about rock crawling and watching the early development of KOH from that forum was a LOT of fun. I followed along every year but never made it out to the event as I lived in CO and then British Columbia and it just wasn't that important to me to travel that far. I made it in 2015 after moving to Las Vegas and buying a SxS and it was fun to finally see the spectacle, but it didn't live up to the expectations I had in my head. Knowing all the drama that happens throughout the race, you don't get that perspective as an in person spectator watching a single point on the course. I also wasn't prepared for the sub 30F tent camping situation 🥶🥶🥶. With the absolutely stellar job they have done with the live feeds, I believe it's a better show at home than it is in person, just my opinion. Similar to the Glamis & Havasu scene, the spectacle is neat as a newcomer to see all the rad equipment and the "show", just jaw dropping the amount of money in one location. As I've aged and experienced things, I cant stand drunks, idiots, or crowds. JV, Havasu, Glamis are places I prefer to go to when everyone else is not there. I'll be watching from the computer again this year.

I did have an absolute blast my first trip to JV in 2016 with my crawler after moving to CA. That trip exceeded my expectations, it is a special place for sure!

I am going...not sure where I am camping yet? I will be out there on the 27th. I was going to bring my F-Toy crawler but I bought a turbo RZR instead to bring.

It will be me and kids, and a buddy of mine and his kids. We will probably be rolling out the evening of Friday the 2nd.

I don't know what their costs are for all of the video production, cameras, operators, drones, data links, and upstreams, But i am blown away by how much they have invested in that, and how good it is all streamed free.

NBC isn't capable of doing what they have done out there.

I'm glad to see someone actually taking that revenue and reinvesting it into the product itself.

I can't speak for how anything else is run, but what they have done with the live streaming is absolutely next level.

Where did the $200 dollar thing come from?
I don't think it's worth a free admission price, let alone $200.
I’d buy a ticket to if there was a one day pass but it was $200 each.

It was $50 if you bought a ticket by Thanksgiving, $75 if by New Years and now $100 at the gate or some similar timeline but those were/are the prices. The fact that I can buy funnel cakes on my lakebed is worth it.

Locals pay $30:p

You can't buy a sublime ticket for that and they will be playing 2 nights from what I hear
2023-02-09 23.42.44.jpg

Edit, here you go
From now until Sept. 30, tickets are $50 for the event scheduled to begin on Jan. 18, 2024. From Oct. 1 through Jan. 1, 2024, tickets will be $75, and from Jan. 2 through the duration of the event, tickets will be $100.

Additionally, buyers will also receive 50% off merchandise when purchasing a King of the Hammers ticket through Aug. 31, event officials said.

The guy at the gate told me it was $200 a person and it wasn’t worth it because it was the last day. I asked if they had a one day ticket and he said no so we walked 60’ in went in where there was a gap in the gate. I didn’t do anymore homework than saying two adults.

I just bought my ticket today. Veteran price is $50 plus fee of $4.50. Will be sleeping in my van and bombing around in the SxS. Not sure where I'll be parked but will probably meet up with some friends. Will be there on 28th but not sure how long I'll stay. Depends on the weather and how much I like the event. My first time so not sure what to expect.

Coldest night of my life was spent sleeping in the back of my old uninsulated cargo van. One year it was insanely cold, I put all the right layers and then slept inside two down sleeping bags mummy style. It was fine once the bags warmed up, but woke up to breathing frost from my mouth and it would just hang in the air LOL

Several years ago my buddy came up with me one night in my new van before the heater and insulation were installed. It has and upper and lower sleeping platform where you can deploy air mattresses, the kiddo gets bottom bunk on a single and my wife and I are top bunk on a queen. I told my pal to bring warm shit like 4 times, he say I got warm shit👍

I knew the kiddos air mattress had a leak but it would last her through the night if I pumped it up good before lights out. So I told my pal this and insisted we pump it up and give him a good shot at comfort through the night. We settle in for the night and about 5 minutes in i hear this rip and he says “ah shit” I just blew out the zipper in the bottom of my sleeping bag. Needless to say he froze his ass off that night and by 3:00 am the air mattress was flat also 😂 first crack of daylight he was out there in the morning sun trying to catch warmth.

BRING WARM SHIT, have extra warm shit in case your heating systems fail. If your open air vehicle bring warm and water proof shit. Being prepared when the weather turns out there is essential to enjoying yourself.

Don't under estimate the wind and possible mud fest if it rains, although last year was warm and dusty af, almost no wind to clear out the valley.

I can't help for the desert races weekend 26/27/28 but for the last weekend Feb 2/3/4, if anyone wants a place to park safe off the lakebed and slightly out of the dust bowl just let me know. I'll be out there with no wife, no kids and no dogs 🕺

Let's plan a meet-up anytime at the bar at the Forty. My neighbor is putting $millions into that place with the plans for a full campground, store, bar etc. and UTV rentals. $100 per night to camp there for KOH is a lot more than lasertown. I'll be eating 3 meals a day there from the Happy Cooker Rig. The menu has been posted

I'm planning on it. I'll be Outcoled's bad navigator. Staying at the camp next to Laser Town. Pricing sure went way up.

Staying at "The Forty"?

I pray for snow every year for KOH. I think racing through snow covered rocks and desert would take it to a new level. Great for dust too 😄 It could happen.

Snow?
You are praying for snow? Bite yer tongue!
Stop that. Dang man I am trying to get outta the damn weather, not drive all the way down there to get into it LOL.
We haven't seen the sun for about 10 days, and has been on the verge of that white stuff here for a few.
Cold...cold is OK. We can do that. I got clothes fer that.
But we don't need no stinkin' snow!
LOL.

Hopefully we can make it this year. I am still trying to figure out the scheduling. A Glamis trip may be one of those weekends or work might get in the way.

When I built out my new van I didn’t mess around, it has insulation and an Espar diesel cab heater with 500ah of auxiliary battery’s to run it. Fortunately on the sprinter vans there is an auxiliary factory fuel line specifically for these heaters. It burns 1 gallon of fuel every 24 hours and I run it out there for a week without having to fire up the van to charge the battery’s.

They make gasoline versions but that fuel source in this environment doesn’t sit well with me. There are also portable propane type heaters, I believe that those introduce moisture into the environment and may need to keep a window cracked to avoid condensation.

My heating system was a $3000 lift by the time I was done 😂 it’s all commercial grade, same stuff the truckers use in sleeper cabs back east that keep them alive in winter. There are Chinese versions on eBay, I’ve heard to buy two so you can swap it out when it fails, also heard they are great and same as the German version🤷‍♂️

The last time we went to KOH approx 6 years ago the dust was enough to keep me from ever returning anytime soon. Not dust from the races or wind - just from people driving around in the valley. You’d think part of the $50 bucks a head from 80K people ($4 Million Dollars) would more than cover that cost. 🤦‍♂️ Hopefully they’ve brought in more water trucks since then to wet down the driving areas!

I added a propane heater to my ToyHauler. It does add moisture inside and I end up cracking the roof vent to reduce the moisture. For KOH the last few years, I added a dehumidifier to reduce the moisture inside the trailer.

End of day, it gets cold during KOH. My first year it was 21 when we rolled back to camp at 1am

I stay out of the dust and off the lake bed when it’s dusty as much as possible. Hammer lung is a real thing, who knows what’s in that soil, but I know it causes people to hack for weeks after exposure. I won’t go in if it’s socked in unless mandatory, just wait for a little wind and it all clears out in 10 minutes time.

We set up over on soggy one year, nice clear air, quiet dark starry nights, whole different vibe, commute into the madness when you want. Only issue with that is you’re a little lower hanging fruit for the methicans. There are local thieves up there that literally will go steal shit the entire time the event is happening like it’s a full time job and their busy season, it’s getting worse each year. Every once in a while you get to read a happy story about one of them being all twacked out and rolling their car off the highway @ 100mph and dieing, but not often enough as far as I’m concerned.

I’ve tent camped the high desert when it’s been in the teens. Using propane for a heat source, and been very comfortable. But I’m looking into one of those diesel standalone heaters. Seem pretty cheap for what they provide.
Edit, I camp El Maroge a lot. Been there in white out conditions. Dust is no joke. I use that nasal lavage. Hard to get used to it first, but then to watch that crap come out of your nose, it works pretty good.

About 18 months ago I was out in JV when there was a legit wind incident, it went white out conditions for an extended period of time, maybe 8-10 hours. There was no way to leave as you could not see 20’ infront of you. I had a 5th wheel that was taking the hit broadside at the time and it was like sleeping in a sail boat in rough seas that night. 😂

Personally I like van camping and short weekends out there, but my girls are pretty fond of the motorhome amenities now so it’s not often I get to roll light. The creature comforts are nice, however there is a detachment from the camping/riding experience that I grew up with and enjoy.

As someone that has been countless times I gotta say I really enjoy the Live TV coverage while sitting at home these days...lol

Not being able to spectate on the actual course thus tied to the monitors in Hammer Town is a polite no thank you.
Listen to Dylan, If the wind blows heavy cover your face. I have been motor-homing on Soggy Dry Lake when a sudden dust storm was so bad you couldn't go outside to save your awning.

I'll watch some on TV.
