How many trees need to comedown? How big are they? Oak???? Have you considered a "cut and haul" your own firewood business?

I got quoted 9k to remove all my piles. Ahhhh...not a chance. Its not like I am still in Cave Creek. Lol
How big of piles?

I had 8 ficus about 16' tall 10" stumps to remove. I figured around 2k my cost. Gardner quoted $800 to cut to dirt level or $1200 to grind 1" down. He showed up with a full size tow behind chipper and tow behind stump grinder. Average tree around here $2-250 to remove. Not worth dusting off my chainsaw.

I am sure my piles fill up a couple of 20 ton trucks. Ridiculous.

this is already old trees down in piles. Mostly cedar but some oak in there. I will throw the oak to the side to burn and cut up bigger pieces to use in a fire pit. Although that cedar is shitty wood to burn

Red or white? Cedar is great fire starter. Cedar and doug fir is pretty much all we burnt when I was growing up. Mix it with the oak and you'll have a great fire.

I have more cedar than oak as far as trees. I try to leave the oaks alone. Cedar trees have been growing for decades here and are all over

Didnt think of mixing it. Red cedar. I was just gonna keep em separated. I know the oak will burn hotter and longer with a lot less sparks and so forth.

I will give that a shot while burning

I've got 16 large Italian cypress trees left to pull, so I know your and your gardener's pain. Since this is our home, and I don't ever want these bitches to grow back, I've already cut and dug out about 15 of them. Each one I've removed has left me with a 6' wide crater about 4' deep. It's been a shit-ton of slow work, but I'm happy to get rid of them, their stumps and as many roots as I can get to. They are nothing but dried out insect and rat hotels, standing their waiting for a misplaced cigarette butt. Good riddance.

Years ago I picked up a used yard vac (picture a push mower but a vacuum instead of cutting)....was an expensive unit, 8hp or so, I picked it up for $20 at an estate sale.

It had about a 4" chute to feed sticks and branches that would get chipped up and sent to the bag. It would choke on anything bigger than about 1/2". Completely useless feature.

I'm not sure 5hp is enough to get much at all done, except leaves maybe. Reviews seem to be pretty OK though....dunno if I'd roll the dice...

You won’t regret renting a real machine. It’ll still go slower than you think though. We’ve chipped hundreds of yards of juniper and oak with ours and it’s real work. Eye, ear protection is a must. Those branches take on a life of their own as the drum pulls them in. I’ve taken my fair share of hits to the shoulder and jaw. Stihl chainsaw helmet is even better. Tight long sleeve shirts too. Loose ones get caught on those cedar branches faster than you can react at times.

I'm not sure about red cedar but white cedar will burn alot hotter than oak but burns fast.

I dont need to chip 200 trees but I have somewhere in that range on the property. This is old cuttings that need to go

Funny you wrote that though. Woke up this morning and decided I am going to rent the SunBelt one and cancelled that order. I plan on working for a straight week just chipping. Fuck it. Lol
Good choice not buying. I owned a good one but still it was just one thing after another to keep it unjammed and running, not to mention it's time consuming. I went the rental route as well but now I just order large rollaway dumpsters for $ 800 - 1000. Seems expensive but the time & hassle of chipping isn't worth it to me.

PS: The rental ones are much heavier duty so if you're going to chip that's the way to go.

I have no shortage of tractors so I ended up buying a 3 pt unit that requires 40 pto hp min. I used to hire a "thing" to come through my pecan orchard after pruning and grind all the trimmings. (the "thing" was pretty bad ass but didn't like anything over 3") now me and a couple guys can clear and chip it in about twice the time, but a much finer chip that works into the soil better.
We spread some of my compost pile (manure and cattle carcasses) last fall and there were still a few big bones left- skull, hip bones etc. My guys grabbed the chipper and tossed the bones in- came out almost powder! ;)

I have a lot to chip up.....LOTS.....I looked at a rental at SunBelt today which was only a couple hundred less than this purchase for a week long rental. The SunBelt one was more robust and heavy commercial grade but....

I think this will get it done as long as I don't just manhandle things. If it does work then I will be set going forward at almost a push price wise compared to the rental.

I looked at some very heavy duty ones but did not want to spend 4K+ for one......

Anyhow....wish me luck as I pick it up tomorrow

Same One I have Tom Works great
