Big issue in my "neighborhood" , We live in a semi rural hilly /canyon area 3 to 10 acre parcels , Lack of depredation and game management has led to the increase of Lions who not only prey on the deer population but they snack on the "gentleman rancher types" baby goats and fluffy dogs, there are a dozen sightings all around over the last few months , I even picked up one on my shop surveillance can a while back , the pic is from a neighbor about a 1/2 mile away ... The wife is now strapped when she walks the dog ;)

Yep, not a good situation. Couple of months ago, we were sitting and eating dinner. A large cat went across our field about 500’ away. He was big too. We have a bobcat that tries to intimidate the dogs and deer. He’s big but nothing like the mountain lion.

A gray wolf was spotted up there the other day as well, first known gray wolf in California in 99 years, it wandered from Oregon and it's tracking collar batteries died in SLO County a couple months ago. Fish and Game wants to tranquilize it and put a new collar on it.

Oh for sure they're in your area, especially with your close proximity to the Hualapai's. We're on the Hackberry end of the Peacocks and the X Bar 1 Ranch foreman shot a mountain lion on our property after he dined on a calf or two.

This one was captured a few years ago on a neighbors Game Cam. While out exploring we've found the remains of a fairly fresh deer kill, but never seen one.
Wife feels more secure in our new SxS with doors then she did with our original Ranger while out exploring.

We definitely have all sorts of wild animals. Believe it or not, the wild dogs are the worst. I’ve had three rush me at the same time when I was opening the main gate. I was able to take one out. Blew the foot off the other one. The two left alive ran off. The one I killed was about 5 feet away from me. If we see a dog on the property with no collar, they’re history. Those wild dogs will tear up our dogs too. Coyotes attack deer and rabbits, but usually run off if they see humans. When we moved here, two of them tried to attack one my dogs when my girlfriend was out walking. I took him out with my rifle. My 338mag destroyed him. Turkey vultures took care of the rest. After that incident, we don’t see many. Javalinas usually just run off if they see you or here noises. We do have a large bobcat. The idiot we bought the property from use to leave meat for him. So, he comes by looking for food. Usually runs off, but has been stalking the dogs and getting a little bold everyday. Really sux because of what the previous guy has done. Hopefully he doesn’t try to attack the dogs. I love it out here, definitely different way of life but it all good.

I'm walking every day now. Should be at 4 miles soon. My friend talked me into buying some pepper spray cause of all the animals up in the hills.

Hope I never have to find out if it works!

Be very aware of wind direction if you find the need to use it. I’m not a fan of a spray for defense. Would be better off with a knife than spray. Of course there’s an even better alternative to spray or knife...

Buy it in Gel form. Much better regarding wind. Just as effective.

From personal experience, those snake loads will kill small rattlers, but you'd best have a few in the cylinder cuz they really tend to piss off the big boys and one has never been enough.

Would one scare away a big cat ? Depends how hungry he is or how yummy you look 🤣

West of Denver there is an offramp off I70 that dirt bags from the city would go to dump dogs. It was/is terrible. A few mountain towns held wild dog hunts back in the 90s.

From a tactical standpoint, it is often recommended to carry in a chest holster for predators. If attacked, the natural human reaction is to hold your hands by your chest or head for self defense. At that point it is both physically and mentally difficult to release and reach for your belt. One man's opinion.

I have .357 mag with snake loads and you would be surprised how big the spray pattern is even being up close.
.22 is worse.
Next time set up a target and you'll see what i mean

Look at the size of the pellets in the .22. I've seen bigger grains of kosher salt lol
Shoot those out of a short barreled handgun and the spray pattern goes wide.
They need to be the size of the 357 pellets and the 357 pellets need to be bigger
Like shooting 00 12 gauge where there's only 9 or 10 pellets

Understood. Thanks.

Never used the snake loads before. Probably a back idea!

When the wild dog packs start becoming a problem the county would send local trackers out to eliminate them.
Not sure if it still happens. Probably not. This was awhile ago. Buddies dad was in the group that used to hunt them. Same guy tracked a mountain lion 9 miles that killed a high-school senior jogging behind the school in 91 or 92.

If you are gonna carry a gun, then why carry a small one?
My sentiments exactly!!

I’ve come across several mountain lions while out hiking over the years. The problem is they’ve become so use to humans now that they rarely run off when confronted. I never hike up in the hills without my EDC now.

Interesting story, especially if you know where I live.. I live dead center in the middle of Havasu..

A few years back I was in my garage and I heard the sound of claws running up the street towards my house.. then I hear these much larger claws hit the asphalt chasing it..

I looked out my garage just in time to see a flash go by and it was a mountain lion chasing something.. Stacy walks out two seconds after and I told her “a damn mountain lion just ran by”. Of course she doesn’t believe me..

We walked outside abd you could see it’s silhouette on a garage door at the end of the street. Whatever it was chasing got away.

You could see a kind of streak go by on our cameras.

The washes that run through town are like freeways for wild animals.. lol. Yes even in the middle of town we get some bizarre stuff.

Since I shoot a lot of 22 snake shot, I did a comparison test between my 22 rifle and 22 - 6" barrel revolver at a couple of different close distances, similar to how I'd use them to pop a rattler.
Of course the closer the tighter the pattern, but what was most noticeable was the hole in the center of the pattern as the pellets spread. The rifle, with more rifling twists due to the longer barrel, had a larger center hole then did the revolver with a much shorter barrel and fewer rifling twists. I'd imagine a smooth bore rifle barrel would optimum, like a shot gun.
Since the test, I've found that using the revolver with a distance of 6-8' packs a pretty good punch and what I'm keeping loaded with shot now.
The advantage for using the 22, even if it requires two shots, is that they're pretty quiet and could easily be confused with other noises.
The 357 mag snake shot is certainly formidable, but everybody's going to hear it.

I've never had a snake shot, blue plastic or crimped work in my Ruger 10-22, none of the snake shot or sub-sonics would cycle it and usually jam if tried.
Why I went to a revolver, plus I can easily pack it in a holster. I was tired of pissing off a big-ass rattler, then end up with a round that wouldn't eject and then it got shovel ugly. 😳
