One last pour. Will sand out in a few hours. Thought I wanted it real shiny. But changed my mind. Don't want to get blinded when I look at the gushes. So going with a mat finish.

Ordered two cams, 2 sets of lifters,
2 sets of roller rockers and one distributor yesterday. Hoping to start putting the old girl back together the weekend after next.

Need a place to get some plug wires though. Need to be long enuff to go around Gill exhaust. Any recommended places.

Had planned on keeping the old skool look but broke down and bought some used gaffrig throttles. Couldn't stand the look of the Morse controls.

How good are the speedometers that use the little paddlewheel compared to pitot speedometers?

I would just got with GPS they are affordable and accurate. plus no lines to run. neither wheel or pitot are very accurate.

I never liked the look of those controls
103880.jpg

and knowing what I know from posts, every time I look at the pics of your helm I ask myself "WTF was the previous owner thinking when he installed those?"

I would of kept it old school too, by going with
103882.jpg

Or do you not like the look of Morse all together?

I just dont like the look of them period. they seem to clutter it up the way they sit above the dash like that. Plus I wanted it so that all of the controls were together. Here is kinda how I am gonna lay it out. the controls are gonna go just below the trim indicator.

Ok got dash mounted, upper part. Throttles have been installed. Trim indicators partially installed, lost 2 of the little pegs and springs. Gotta order those. Short block is built. Waiting on pushrods and timing chain/gears. Lower part of dash is ready to be coated with resin. Gauges are all hooked up.

Did you update to a roller cam? If not, did you at least load up on high zinc oil? A bottle of GM Break-In additive or similar might be a most excellent idea if you haven't already added one to the crankcase. I am overly cautious after wiping out a few lifters and the cam a few years ago. The same oil I had used for years went Earth friendly and didn't tell me. They reduced the zinc which ruined my 4th of July weekend. I'd hate to see all your hard work go to waste because of the wrong oil.

GM has their EOS additive... Comp Came has some, Crane, etc. The key is to ensure the zinc content is sufficient. Brad Penn has a break in oil that worked well for me in a non-boat motor a few years ago. I gave up on flat tappets and run rollers now because I didn't want to worry about lifter / lobe failure due to crap oil.

If you do a Google search for high zinc break in oil I am pretty sure you'll find the info you need.

Which formulation? The newer CJ-4 has reduced zinc additive content than the previous spec. I have heard too many numbers to know which to believe.

I still run the Rotella T 15/40 in just about everything I own except my Yukon and Subaru. It is good inexpensive oil and the price lets me change it out far more often than if I was running the exotic stuff. Even my CRF450R gets it and it works great on the engine and trans side. I just wish they still offered the older CI-4 spec stuff.
