Neighbor got the same message that 500 JPL employees and 40 independent contractors were being laid off. Also told NOT allowed to come into the office tomorrow. Maybe to prevent a riot.
Usually those told to stay home are safe.
Those told to report are at risk.

Been through that process before and that is how it worked.

Telling the best and brightest in their fields, "stay home tomorrow and we'll let you know if you can come back to work"

Yet billions to Ukraine or to illegal immigrants...

It's the government... Not at all synonymous with the best and the brightest.

NASA has become an abysmal failure over the last 15 years focusing on political issues like 'climate change', diversity bullshit, rehashing the same old crap for billions and billions like the SLS program....

Wife's meeting is at 9:30 tomorrow... Gotta love the "we love and respect you" followed by "we are breaking up via email". Don't even have the courtesy to call if you're canned.

As an aside, @hallett21 needs to have his ass kicked by his cousin. Family at JPL, and you question the moon landing?🤯🤬

Sad news for sure.
Southern Cali used to be over-flowing with aerospace.
I've often thought some politician with juice in Congress back East or down South gets the funding for projects shifted to their districts instead.

The USA is going the have to hit bottom financially before we see any changes. Probably be more of a reset and back to the way it is now with no changes at all.
Smoke and mirrors.

Maynard said the Russians can't shoot down USA built missiles or jam them with counter measures because USA missiles don't use GPS, electronic (radio) nor other Sat guidance.
They are terrain reading guidance. For an example launching a rocket here in Simi, could drop it in the back of a pick up truck in the parking lot at Safeway in Bakersfield. A moving pick up truck as well Maynard adds.

That technology came out of Pasadena goes the tale and it's really sophisticated, really knows what it's looking at.
He's close to all this and I buy that take.

It's the nerds and geeks that win wars.

So the layoffs are tied to the 24 fed budget. Is it safe to say if said budget is passed these people are rehired?

I work in this industry and I am ressponible for buying some of this technology. The answer is yes and no.

From a technology leading standpoint (space wars) USA is very behind right now

In theory.

Reality is NASA's budget is anticipated to take a serious hit. NASA has already requested JPL to stop work on MSR (Mars Sample Return). Huge project, massive national pride potential, massive science potential, and it has already been axed... Build (Ukraine) Back Better!

Why invest in Americans when you can invest in Russians…oh, I mean Ukrainians on the other side of the world?

Having grown up somewhat close by, and having family that were involved in aerospace years ago, I guess I put JPL on a pedestal of sorts. Maybe a romantic notion, as there are very few names left of the "old guard".

It's kind of surprising to hear SpaceX doesn't pay as well. In a way, it shouldn't be. They seem to be more of a private business than a dedicated government contractor. Government will always pay more, because they're spending someone else's money. It was true in construction, probably is in other things as well.

So only if MSR or another project is reinstated people would return.

Then I guess Elon will bet taking this over then.... Nasa has been known to overly spend.

SpaceX employees get paid very well, especially because they can take stock.

I know a guy that was cnc machine setup and operator. When he left SpaceX to move to my friend's business his stock value was well into the 6 figures, and he only worked at spacex for 5 or so years, as a machinist, not a manager, he was on the shop floor writing toolpaths and setting up machines, running programs.

@hallett21 My daughter's chemistry teacher used to work at Amgen as a chemist he but hated his job (not saying your cousin does) he decided to become a teacher, he took a massive paycut but he loves his job, enjoys teaching and because of his experience as a chemist and his experiments in class the students love him and his class. Her experience could make her a great HS science teacher and the job won't go anywhere.

If we want to live in a free world, we have to support Ukraine.

Building weapons in America and sending them to Ukraine is no different for the economy than building rockets in America and sending them into space.

I know a guy that was making big money before 07, building high end dune cars. Phenomenal welder. Boom went bust for him as well as others. He applied at SpaceX, and last I heard was still there. He had said the pay was decent, and there were benefits too. He said the best part, everything fit and was perfectly ready by the time he got it. Prep was simply clean and go.

Building rockets and sending them to space is to learn.
Building rockets and giving them to people to kill our supposed enemy is not.
Already videos of American made shoulder fired rockets used against Israeli tanks. War pays the bills, because war greases the palms of those who start them.

One of, if not the most corrupt country in the world! All Ukraine does is provide cheap women and a place for the big dogs of the world to launder their money!

The welding processes down in Hawthorne have been having a few issues lately. LOTS of out of spec pieces due to a lack of correct climate control in the fabrication areas. There is more to the story stemming from Elon's philosophy of time is money over most any short of design (this is what I had been told by SpaceX personnel).

And the axe falls on another one. Officially laid off.
Sorry to hear that. Strange that with the amount of people being laid off they didnt follow the WARN Act.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988 is a U.S. labor law that protects employees, their families, and communities by requiring most employers with 100 or more employees to provide notification 60 calendar days in advance of planned closings and mass layoffs of employees

I was one of 30K people laid off from Boeing after 911 and we were all given 60 days notice and at the time I was a contractor.

Procore just laid off 5% of their work force. They offered me a pretty nice remote job a few months back I was strongly considering. Feel like I dodged a bullet

I would assume lots has changed. Last I spoke with him at any length was in 13 or 14. He'd been there for a few years, but that was when they were a "small" company. I want to say he was in El Segundo...but may have been Hawthorne?

Interesting, glad it's proving gratifying for your daughters Chem teacher.
I had a HS Chem teacher who was a recently retired Chemist for Richfield Petroleum. Nicest guy you'd ever meet and a true Mr Wizard.
His class room demonstrations were off the hook cool and that was one class I always looked forward to --- for the couple of months he was there.
Poor guy was not prepared to deal with the few smart-ass students who refused to show him any semblance of respect and appreciation and instead took advantage of his friendly nature. He was simply not prepared to control the few class clown morons and once that crew discovered his vulnerability, were relentless and no amount of peer pressure would keep them at bay.

He tried, but quit having obviously not signed up for that bullshit he didn't need in his life.

They have a small location in El Segundo and one in Long Beach. I have never been to the one in El Segundo, but I have been to the one in Long Beach. I thought all the fabrication was done in Hawthorne, but it may not have always been that way and some may be done in El Segundo that I am unaware of.

There is a 60 days paid period, so officially her fuck off date is April 7th. Good news is those 60 days put her over her anniversary, and her severance is based on 17yrs vs 16. Still, 17yrs at a company, and they are disrespectful enough to terminate via an email? I'm more upset about that than the actual termination!

Yes, that is absolutely BS to be laid off via email.

Side note, JPL laid me off in Dec 2008 when I was in the hospital recovering from a heart attack. Although in their defense I was a contractor but still should have had some freaking compassion. Should have allowed me to come back to work and then lay me off.

I cant imagine how any company feels that firing folks over an email is acceptable? I can't imagine the thinking behind this. Its insane! Is this the world we live in now?

I dont even do that to the clowns I have to fire for disciplinary actions / theft etc who work for me.

The days of going to work for a company and retiring 30 years later from that company are long gone. We started our small business a little over 25 years ago and hire #1 and #3 have been with us 25 years. We pay well and don’t have the BS that goes with even a small operation. I keep the work flowing and they accomplish it. The two owners are going to lay themselves off in the near future.

My last "real" job, I opened the letter informing me I was being "furloughed for yet to be determined amount of time". Said furlough was to begin in 30 days. That was large state organization, federally funded. Being listed as a furlough they could avoid that type of technicality.

I opened that letter at the dinner table, after coming home from my Mom's funeral... At 6am the following day, I informed my supervisor I would be burning some vacation. I returned on my "last day" to turn in my keys, sign out and have lunch with some of my friends.

If a business can be so disconnected to it's labor force, I felt no need to return at any time. After 7 years, I was still just a number. After another 7, I don't believe that would have changed.
C'est le vie...
