At 23, you still have time to make something of yourself. If you don't have any interest in going to real school, then maybe learn a trade. A lot of my high school buddies went to lineman school and are making good money. There is decent money in HVAC, Plumbing and other trades as well. That is the direction I would go if I was you.

When I did wrp we went to the riverside plant a lot. Those guys get paid well. I believe it's 3 classes or certs u need? I spoke to one of he supervisors about it.

To the op. In a union carpenter and I do pretty good and enjoy what I do. My Union is looking for guys as well as a couple others. Commercial construction seems to be booming. I just put in a call today to get my little brother on. Not sure this is what I wanted for him but at 24 the clock is running out. It's 30 years to retire and no one wants to hang drywall when they are 60. I'm 27 and stated the trade when I was 20. Where did the time go?!!

I currently have my level 1 certificate for water treatment from the state but treatment plants dont really want level 1 certs. To take a level 2 cert, you only need 36 hours of class time and to pay a $70 fee to take the state test. I take my classes at mt. Sac.

Check the jobs section and do a little research about us. PM me if you're interested and I can point you in the right direction.

We have a location in Anaheim, close to Yorba Linda, as well as jobs throughout the country.

I started in 1998 as a way to help pay for college and never left. It's a common theme from many of the employees.

I'd say find a trade doing something you will enjoy. You'd probably get to a spot where you can make decent money faster than you would by going to school imo.

Learn a trade.
Also depends if you want, To be your own boss or work for someone?

Learning a trade, will let you make that decision.

My son your age works as a apprentice at his uncles shop during the week. He also now works at home in our garage with his own cnc lathe on weekends. Just starting out. Plus helps me out with my business, as I will help him out with his.

My advice was learn something you like doing and go for it. Don't look back. Do it 100%. Work your ass off learning and making money. Look at failure as education and keep moving forward.

The bottom line is you need to make money to enjoy this life . Don't let anyone ever tell you can not do it. If you can figure it now, by the time your 30 you will be much better off.

Time flys by. The earlier you start the better.

Good luck.

This is 2015, you don't do your job, get fired, get 99 weeks of unemployment, file for section 8 housing, start a cash business on the side with a corporation under someone else's name, after the 99 weeks, file for disability keep that going and get free healthcare and foodstamps too. The business should be making some cash now, put as many on payroll as you can for 6 months. No real paychecks are paid to anyone, just need social security numbers, fire all employees on paper and collect 99 weeks of unemployment. Just keep it all going and have a fleet of imaginary people collecting.

I learned this trick from a buddy that does a lot of commercial loans to middle eastern clients.

Don't waste your time with level 1 certification. Take the level 2 in treatment and distribution. I have a T4 and D4
Yea, the first course i took, i had already found out that i had to send my test payment by a certain date and it was the day that i started my course (night class). Well i figured that i had to take my course and that would cover me for the first test. I felt like a dumbass when my instructor told us that we could take the T2 after we completed at least 36 hours in the class. My test was 2 weeks after i completed the class. Ended up getting a 90%. A guy that sat next to me who was taking the T3 asked me why i was taking the T1 and he told me i would laugh when i got to the math...oh i totally laughed. Lol

Join the coast guard ?
Also if you have no ties holding you down. I would go venture out of your area or even state to look for opportunities , if that is any interest.

Stay away from any kind of farm or ranch work. [emoji107][emoji107]. Especially milk. You will end up like me and you don't want that [emoji202]

The trades can be very rewarding, I served a carpentry apprenticeship starting in 1998. There is something about the feeling at the end of the day that, hey, I did that today... however, knowing a trade does NOT make you into a business person. making the jump from working for someone, to working for yourself can be like falling from a cliff. But, hey, I'm still here. Self employed since 2001...

I know Im gonna hear shit for this but if you want to be in the construction trade, being in the union will get you better money faster. Carpenters, millwrights, electrical, pipe fitters, etc. That being said you need to show up everyday on time and work your ass off and keep your head down. Learn as much as possible ask questions, the more you learn the further u go. There's guys that ride the books and don't work very much, and then there's guys that have been with the same company for 30 years, guess which ones work harder ( or are related:D)
And when you've been there a few years and start to get comfortable and cocky like some of my apprentices, you get a reality check :bash: I had plenty when I was coming up:D

^^^^this!

I know a few people that took this route. It's a cash cow! Lots of money, lots of overtime and lots of travel.

I sit behind a desk. Spend most of my day not working but I like what I do. I handle workers comp claims. I make a lot of money, but every other Friday, Uncle Sam shows me just how big his dick is. He doesn't like people like me (not married, no house, no kids, no write off's, etc) so taxes on the check are a bitch!

I'm only 25 and kind of fell into this job. Prior to, I worked at Petsmart. Went from cashier to stocker to lead to manager to other manager. Hit the end of the line when they wouldn't move me up any further.

I go where the money is. Seems to work good for me!

I work in wireless telecom sales and this industry in booming!

if you are not into getting a 4 year business degree and getting into sales within this industry i recommend becoming a cell site tech. with overtime and bonuses many of the socal techs can earn upward of 70k plus their 2nd year. you have to climb towers and work shitty hours but if you work hard you will always have a job in this industry.

cell phones are not going away anytime soon and the technology is like computers, doubles every few years.

my two cents.....

Im 31 btw

I'm a project manager for spacex, when I was going through college I wanted to be an airframe and power plant mechanic because I heard they made great money. I went through all the schooling and testing.

I worked at a sheet metal shop for a year and told myself I never want to do manual labor again lol so I pursued a higher education.

But....airplane mechanic's do make good money.

I would try to get in as a machinist at a water district to get your foot in the door, then get your certs in distribution and treatment and work your way up. I'm in a fleet department and have a d2 just in case I want to move into a different department later.

I have always preferred to use my mouth versus my brawn i try to put deals together and have been very successful at it. If you know of anyone in a rural hospital setting that can control the air ambulance services this could be VERY LUCRATIVE.

Depending what you are selling, sales isnt a bad gig. One of the best gigs I know is being a factory rep for a construction line of products. Good base salary, work from home when you arent traveling, expense accounts, etc.

I agree with a lot of guys on the trades. Specially in the LA area right now. I know most trades are seriously hurting right now since they lost a lot of guys during the recession and are scrambling to get more guys.

I'm in the refrigeration industry which is a little more specialized than just HVAC. Some guys like it more, like me, some prefer HVAC. Mt. SAC and Cypress college have pretty good HVAC programs that can get you into the industry pretty easily and pretty cheap being as it is a JC.

I'm in the EMS part of refer. Good trade to be in but I hate the work and on call schedule.
