Friend was down there looking to buy a used Ultra from him that he says he built while working for Ultra. It is a 2001 and I was wondering if it was built at the facility in the valley ran by the Van Beeks or at the facility that was run by John West. Anyone know which location he worked at?

John and Jeff worked together as Ultra.

Thanks Throttle. I did not recall a Jeff at the valley location. My Ultra was rigged there and wanted to make sure the boat he plans on buying was not.

Only problem is the price. A new 21' with 350 in 2000 was only $24,999. It does have upgrade to mag and bravo one which was around $5k upgrade and nice stereo. Insurance will only insure it for 14k and they are asking 24 but he said they would wiggle a little. He is an impulse buyer and always loses his ass. I have sold all his toys for him when he impulse decides to sell. I can see myself selling this for 12k in a few months LOL

The price is good. I'm sure there is a bit of room in that price, and it seems right in line with what they are selling for. I haven't seen ANY 21's in that condition for 12k lol but if your buddy buys it and you put it up in a few months for 12, let me have first run at it. I'll be there that day! :)

PM Ultra28 with the details on the boat and he can give you the lowdown. But Jeff (Cobra) was a bare hull dealer for Ultra until they split ways. Jeff then started Cobra.

It would be hard to tell exactly where the boat was rigged and assembled.

Jeff is a straight shooter and if he says he assembled the boat in Montclair, then I would tend to believe him.

Out of the three facilities (San Diego, Montclair and San Fernando), Jeff and his crew rigged their boats better than most. There was a period of time where Jeff ("Ultra of Montclair," before he opened "Cobra"), was rigging all of his own boats. There was even a time when Jeff was rigging boats for John West down in the San Diego shop. If "Ultra of Montclair" did sub-standard work (Which they didn't), John West would have never sent any of his hulls up to Montclair to be rigged. Jeff and his crew are top notch and they put out a great product. If they didn't, they would have never survived the economic downturn. The fact he is still in business today and seems to be doing fairly well should be a good indicator that he knows how to turn out a quality product.

I haven't seen the boat you are talking about but if the boat was not rigged in San Diego or Montclair, I would look the other way. Just my .02. :)

Good luck and post up some pics if your buddy pulls the trigger.

Henry

When I was looking for another Ultra last year I passed on two that had relation to the Van Beeks.

I dove up to a dealer in Burbank (can't recall the name) to look at an Ultra 21XS I/O for sale. I think it was listed for $23k. When I arrived the lot was almost vacant. One of the workers who barely spoke Engilsh handed me a cell phone with a white guy on the line. He directed to a Holiday Inn parking structure in Burbank where they park their inventory. Weird! When I arrived I didn't see the boat so I called back and was told, "Oops! That boat was in Bullhead City getting worked on". He told me that the boat was originally rigged in the SFV so I asked his last name and he said "Van Beek" so I hunk up shortly thereafter.

That Ultra at Cobra is pretty clean. I was in the market for a 21 Ultra or Cobra a year ago and found most to be in the $18-24k range. I found a pretty good deal, but had to drive over 1000 miles to get it. After I worked out all of the bugs out of it I was well into that price range. Those boats with the 350 are great. I ended up geting one with a 502/Jet because it had more features and a closed bow (I'm not big on open bow boats).

Not a bad price. Your friend would pay double for a brand new one.

Well we shall see what He decides. I tried my best to convince him to buy Throttles friend 26' Cobra over the Ultra. The used boat market has definitely gone up over 2-3 years ago. I am contemplating selling my Ultra 22 stealth with these prices and upgrading over winter to a 24-26'. I like my seating arrangement just want walk through cuddy as well. Not sure if any 24-26' models have the seats behind driver and shotgun like my 22 does.

I believe it was an option on my 230 razor walk thru cuddy to her seats behind the driver and shotgun. I'm not 100% but I do believe the hern and I discussed it. That ultra is a sweet boat I almost bought it the first time I walked into cobra. It's been getting more interest everytime I'm in there. I was shocked my bayliner sold that quick the guys at cobra are doing lots of things right in my book they've earned a loyal life long customer!

I have seen that 21' Ultra for sale at Cobra boats, it was extremely clean both boat and trailer. I purchased a 2002 21' Cobra Copperhead from a private party a few weeks ago. My insurance company only wanted to insure my boat for up to $17,000. But then I got a call back and was told the underwriter researched the current used boat market and they agreed to insure it for up to $25k. Good luck to your friend.

Just an FYI, that boat was laid up and rigged in Montclair. Jeff would put "Ultra Custom Boats" in cursive, John used the block letters till he went with his logo. Not sure exactly what they did in the valley. Hell, they might have tried to copy both.

Great info. Thanks

So mine is the 350 EFI with the Bravo 1 and upgrade Stereo with a clean gelcoat and decent interior is worth how much?

It is my understanding that there was an upgrade package for $5,000 that included the 350 Mag, Drive Shower, upgrade Alpine Stereo and 2 30 Gallon fuel tanks. Does anyone know about this?

Someone else bought it.... He bought the 26 Cobra that was next to it. The one Throttle posted up. We just got to Parker and it towed great. Jeff was very helpful and my friend had nothing but good things to say. Take it out tomorrow and see how she runs. Don't think he will sell this one, we are already talking upgrades and my neighbor here has a stereo shop Wired For Sound.

Back then in 2001 yes, my Ultra 22 Stealth upgrade to 454mpi with bravo 1 was $7500 in 2000. The used boat market is going good if you plan on selling now is the time.

That seems like a good deal. My stereo upgrade alone was near 4k. The engine quite a bit more but the drive shower was pretty cheap [emoji3]

Not sure if the 23' would be big enough. And it would need more than a small block. About to launch and I will see how this one does. Prefer a walkthrough cuddy as I launch and anchor out myself most times. With this 26' not sure I can do it all myself. If so maybe a custom 26' build.

A custom build 26 would be sweet. I know they will do a walk through if u wanted. I did the walk thru on the 23 cause like u it's a one man show and I didn't want to deal w crawling under. The 26 is much bigger though.

I was thinking the same when I wanted the 26ft about having to crawl under to get to the front .Wife wanted a walk thru.
Took out the new 26 Sunday For the first time . There was lot of room to get to the front. A 23 get a bit smaller under the cuddy.
The 26 your not even on your knee .

My Dad has a 2001 Ultra 21 Stealth. I am not sure if he has the "package", but he went with the 350 Mag, bravo one and the duel tanks. The boat has been fantastic since he got it. The 350 is bullet proof. He isn't into big stereos so he didn't get one, but he has the rear facing seats. Tons of room for a 21'er. It actually has more room that my Ultra 247.

His has the American flag gel coat.

I would think low to mid $20s. I wouldn't sell mine for any less. Only problem is if I sold it, I don't know what I'd want next. I like my boat.

Not sure. Mine is a 502/jet with two 25 gallon tanks. It has a great stereo too (not installed by Ultra).

My friend has the has a 23 mid cabin Razor. It's very comfortable for a 23'. I could crawl through to the bow no prob.

Yep then there are 4. Yours, Wes's old one(Froggystyle), MoistureMissile and there is a white/midnight cherry and grey one out there.

If you look though MoistureMissile's is different. Look at the deck cleats.

Friend was down there looking to buy a used Ultra from him that he says he built while working for Ultra. It is a 2001 and I was wondering if it was built at the facility in the valley ran by the Van Beeks or at the facility that was run by John West. Anyone know which location he worked at?

Well here's what I Know about Jeff...Jeff started working for Ultra before the Van Beek brothers were involved.... when I purchased my first Ultra in '92, the original group working at Ultra were as follows, the company was owned by the Family, can't remember name, Jerry Van Beek was Son in law, owned Big house overlooking Puddingstone Res. Ron Sanchez was Sales, Carter Read was in Rigging, Jeff was parts man, he had all the contacts for parts, he ordered motors, drives. jets .. you named the builder he bought it, helped him greatly when he split and started Cobra... After JVB ran his in laws company into the ground, John West bought Ultra and most of this group was gone, the VB brothers opened Ultra "Dealership" in the Valley, an off shoot from JW in SD, this shop did their own rigging, which lead to the separation from JW in SD, the Valley shop was run by Jason, but big brother Jerry was still in the background, Ron Sanchez went off and started Essex, Good boats, he also learned from Ultra's original owners, Carter Read left and started Ultimate Warlock, with another group of investor's....After JW took over he changed the Philosophy of Custom boat building for the better, the others that left took their Ideas and attitudes and went on their own.... some survived and some didn't, right off the bat, JW did great until the economy tanked and took everybody down....losing money was not an option for most..... that's what I know.... BTW.... I went to a few parties at JVB house .... glad I survived :D :D :D

It was Jerry's much younger brother that ran the Lopez Canyon operation, the place is still there with gates mostly closed. Run like hell if you see one of those boats. I have seen two that sunk first time out, no sealant used between the deck and hull joints!!
