I had a TJ and really liked it, except for the room. We couldn’t hardly get a car seat and stroller in it. I searched for a year for a JK 4 door. Found an 08 cheap. It’s needs a lot of cleanup and love, but fuck some of them are pricey. Clean car fax, but it came from Canada, so it’s got some rust here and there. Had custom wheels with the stock spare. Shocks are shot, so I’m just gonna buy a 2” lift for it. I’ll get it clean and respectable. The room is day and night though. I wanted a manual too, they are hard to find. It drives way better than the TJ on the road. Feels a thousand times safer on the highway. Off road wise, the TJ is hard to beat. Everything else though, the JK is way more refined.

Three-link, take a look at all the bushings. If its Death wobble have someone slowly saw the steering wheel while you put your hand on every steering component. You can find the issue pretty quickly with that method. In so far as the rear three-link, they can do some weird stuff if the geometry is off. I would start again by looking at all the pivot points for wear.

Hard to tell in the pictures but it looks like the drag link has a pretty good angle on it. Quick google search should help you correct the issue.

So…
My take after having a few and being in a lot of 2 door YJ / TJ and then 4 door JK….the 2 door jeeps are a bit sketchy on pavement stock, and get sketchier when lifted and thrown on tires.

1 - It’s super short wheelbase / solid front axle. That’s an automatic issue and it’s gonna make it drive like crap compared to any “normal” modern vehicle you’ve become accustomed to over time.

2 - It’s lifted, exacerbating the issue noted above. Higher CG, more travel, squishier = it’s gonna move around more and react to the road

3 - The wheels - high offset rims greatly magnify the forces acting upon the suspension. Like a breaker bar….way more torque on bushings, tie rod ends, etc due to increased leverage.

4 - The tires - aggressive tread and wide tread footprints (yours arent massive or mud terrains, but compared to stock they are a huge change) make it grab the road and magnify tread steering and sensitivity to bumps, uneven conditions, expansion joints, etc.

But since it’s an off-road toy with around town duties, you probably don’t wanna compromise and want to make it more bearable.

Besides checking all the bushings and making sure the shocks are good, the biggest thing I can recommend is checking your tire pressure. Overinflated 33” or 35” tires (inflated to door sticker PSI) will make it drive horrible. Do a chalk test on some flat concrete surface, and lower PSI down till you get an even contact patch from inside to outside of the tread. You’ll be surprised how low of PSI you actually need with the bigger tires. My wife’s JKU drove horrible when we got it - ended up doing the chalk test and we lowered the air pressure in the 35x12.5x20 tires from 38 PSI all the way down to 24PSI, and now it drives….well….great for a keep with 35’s on 20’s lol. Night and day difference. And the tires wear a bit toward the center still, which tells me we could probably more PSI if we wanted. Chalk test don’t lie….

Check the air pressure and chalk it!

Or drive it on the dirt and it will feel much better lol

Stretch and upgrade the TJ, the king coilovers are 650-700each. My jeep rides great on the highway with this kit

soooo,... how much?... JMO... never buy a jeep if you want comfort , smooth quiet ride.... little jeeps are cool toads, slow off road vec.... great go anywhere , if you don't care when you get there... 800 rzr will out perform it... we had a new 4dr jk... it just set,.. too nice to go beat up off road... and would never keep in any way with an xp 1000 rzr... they're kinda like old street rods... you give up a lot for the hey-lam part.. fuc, my chevy cruze or my fiat 500 is like getting in a caddy after riding around in the jeep..

JK ride is ok I still wouldn't say it's anything to write home about. honestly my 17' 2500 Dodge diesel rides better. If your into the longer wheelbase the LJ maybe a good platform to. I have a 11' JK and it wags all over the place too. I love it but I think the only way you can get rid of that is to upgrade the suspension and go with wider dana 60 axles. Just my thoughts but I'm not for sure. Best of luck man!!

^ This----Seen that a few times. The other thought I had this morning is Caster. Some short arm lift kits will mess the caster up. With the short wheelbase that can get sketchy on the road.

I have had a lot of jeeps and raced a TJ in Jeepsped years ago. You can make them handle really well, but not normally with an inexpensive lift kit.

Before you sell it and trade for a JK/JL, I would take it to a credible alignment shop and get an inspection. My last jeep a 2 door JK handled great until it didn't. I battled death wobble and high wear steering components because I drove the hell out of it offroad. The suspension design is similar in both the TJ and the JK. I assume the JL is still the same, I never have looked at one. The Ram trucks can also have some of the same death wobble issues when you put a low-cost lift, or just throw spacers on the coils. (The caster)

I have a long-time friend named Danny Grimes, who goes by the name Grandpa in Moab. He has been building jeeps almost as long as there have been Jeeps. He believes the TJ/LJ is the best Jeep platform hands down.

On my TJ everything back there was just worn out. I replaced it all with a long arm Metalcloak and it rides like butter now. If I was to do it again I’d do the TJ to LJ conversation that Genright recently came out with.

So this is a 2FF for sale thread? I totally didn’t pick up on it. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Good luck with the sale. That is the most I’ve ever seen a regular non rubi TJ listed for. That’s LJ money and an LJ Rubicon is the holy grail.

Sell it and get an LJ. Bought this last January. Did a 4” lift, 5:13 gears with lockers, stereo, skid plates, still not in it anywhere near what a newer one costs.

These guys seem to have decent articles on Jeep stuff.. https://www.quadratec.com/

just got this one for my daughter to have at school in Colorado. Spent two 9 hour days driving it there, thankfully not as bad as I expected :)

Why? You just picked it up right?
Kids don’t ever want to go for a ride. It’s no fun going by myself. Kinda sucks. I bought it and went spent a bunch of money setting it up with new Terra Flex suspension, falcon shocks, switched to 17” wheels and tires, changed diff, trans, transfer case fluid. 2 synthetic oil changes in 4,000 miles. It’s dialed and ready to go.

Soon as I find out if I can skip the vaccine mandate and keep my job. I’m going truck shopping and selling the Jeep.

Lookin for a high mileage jk 2007 or newer at a fair price, plan it dropping a Lt motor and 10spd in it . That plan a, plan b is finding a good deal on a fairly modified jk with fairly modified suspension. ive been eyeing the Evo double throw down suspension if I did a build. Thoughts?. Fairly new to the Jeeping but wanting something thats capable to hit some whoops while also some trails.

My opinion @THE WIDGE , you're on the right track with the double throw down. That kit will let you eat the whoops, give you a little bit of air time while still be very capable in the rocks. It's a beast of a suspension package that's pretty reliable. You'll want a f-150 axle under it, whoops I meant 60/80 axle set.
