Once again rrrr provides a quality thread full of essential knowledge for the everyday RDP'er!

๐Ÿ˜

On July 5, 1937, Hormel Foods introduced their processed food product named SPAM. The name is a combination of the words spiced ham.

Some SPAM facts:
  • Consisting of "six simple ingredients" โ€” pork with ham, salt, water, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrate โ€” SPAM has "a relatively simple, conventional" production process.
  • Beginning in 1941, SPAM was sent around the world to feed Allied troops during World War II. Over 100 million pounds of SPAM were sent to feed the troops.
  • As of 2023, over 9 billion cans of SPAM have been sold throughout the world.
  • "More SPAM is consumed per person in Hawaii than in any other state in the United States," says the website for the Waikiki SPAM JAM, the SPAM-focused food festival. "Almost seven million cans of SPAM are eaten every year in Hawaii," said the festival's webpage.
  • In 2022, Hormel claimed that some 13 cans of SPAM were consumed every second, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

Despite the rumor that Spam is everything but the oink... It is made using the left over pork shoulder from carving the hams and then the trimmings from the ham when it is prepped for packaging. Hormel was looking for a product to use these left over cuts of meats and "invented" Spam.

Yep, Hawaiians eat a whole bunch of SPAM. As rrr posted, they are the #1 consumers. More amazing than that . . . they also have the greatest longevity of any state. Go figure. . . . ?

When I was a kid, my Mom would make cubed fried Spam and overeasy eggs for breakfast. Mopping up egg yolks and bits of Spam with buttered toast was great stuff.

My Dad's specialty was chipped beef on toast. The beef was little round flat slices, rolled up in a glass jar. He would chop and fry it in a skillet while making a giant batch of white gravy using bacon grease. When the toast was done, the beef was spread on it, and both were covered with huge blorps of gravy.

Awesome.

As long as were at it, love corned beef in a can on bread with Best Foods or cooked with Fried potatoes.

Yeah, Tom Farner went with me last Thursday to take Ted to lunch.
I walk up to give him a hug with some fresh fried Spam and he has a can in his hand to give me!
He loves the stuff!
Had a great Mexican lunch with him!๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ

My English MIL reminds us often that Spam was the only meat their family had when โ€œthe Americansโ€ were dropping bombs from overhead during WWII.

I tell herโ€ฆ HELLO, youโ€™re welcome ๐Ÿ˜„

I love Spam but no thanks on the Musubi

After my reminiscing post this morning, I texted my Dad and told him next time I visit he's gonna have to bust out the SOS.

Whatโ€™s wrong with lips and assholes?
Well itโ€™s probably in everything now. Used to be things like burgers were advertised as being 100% sirloin. Now they say 100% beef. Itโ€™s no longer just (or any) sirloin these days. Same for everything else, the race to the bottom to maximize profit by cutting costs and lying to the consumer about what they are actually eating. Weโ€™ve pretty much arrived at human grade dog food with better presentation.

Slice it up, throw it on the grill. Easiest and tastiest way to do it.
No mess in the house or trailer.
Get a spam slicer also
That's how I fry baloney...outside on the grill !
