It was a good day and then a bad day on the lake today

Finally getting comfortable in the new to us boat. Weather and water were perfect and I’ve now had maybe 15 plus hours of seat time. As a result, I pushed it into the 90s for the first time. Pretty smooth and stable however I did not execute any significant maneuvers - just followed the lake’s path to the Springs. Still 1,200 Rs left to go however, Im still learning and taking it incrementally.

Unfortunately, as we were a mile out from Thompson Bay (heading to the Turtle for lunch) we threw a blade from the port cleaver. Going to likely have to replace both now as they had been worked extensively. Not sure if the starboard can be matched..

Oh snap! That is a bummer for sure.

Glad it held up long enough for you to get a good run though.

Those cleavers...particularly when they are worked....they are so finicky....when they are so thin and sharp...micro cracks turn out to macro cracks...nice boat!

What did it do when it threw a blade? Vibrate like crazy?

The second it started to vibrate (and it was severe at speed), I shut it down. At first I thought it might be a thrown blade or perhaps even a motor mount issue, regardless, I determined what side it was, kept it off and motored in on the unaffected (starboard) side. It was only when I pulled the boat out of the water that it was confirmed.

He wishes he was gonna get off that cheap. Ouch.

New set of cleavers are ridiculously expensive. Perhaps B Blades or someone else has a decent used set that will work. Regardless, I’m scheduled to drop off the boat next month at Teague for full rebuilds (due to hours only) which will likely predicate an upsize anyway.

Ouch.......What pitch were those? The recent pricing I have seen for new Mercury CNC 5 blade cleavers are close to double today what they were just 4 years ago

How much are those BBlades?

6 blade 39 x 16.8, at least that’s what the factory test sheet says. I believe they are Mercury and were later worked on by B Blades since there is an BB stamp on them. I reached out to them a couple of months ago with pics (thinking I might buy a reconditioned spare set) but other than acknowledging my first email, they never got back to me.

Unfortunately these aren’t an off the shelf product, they are made to order. I’m told a set of new Mercurys run roughly $16k plus the tax. Since the size may need to change after the rebuilds (scheduled for next month), I’m going to wait to see what Teague says. Not sure if I’ll be able to find a decent used set (quality checked, balanced, etc.) but I do see used props in close sizes (mostly Herrings) in the $7k asking range.

Here they are pre-incident. They really did look fine. I saw no sign of fatigue and examined them every time I went out.

What did Teague quote you for a rebuild? Top and bottom ends? Or just tops?

Sorry about your props, I know they’re extremely expensive and can be hard to get NEW.

They’re around $7,000 new.

Full rebuilds. He gave me a rough range which, while not cheap, makes sense to me. He once built a blower motor for us and he serviced our Donzi exclusively. Never ever had a service related issue on the water.

Although the motors are running strong (they are 700s), and have good compression numbers, they are approaching 600 hours so it’s time. Certainly much cheaper to do while still running good.

I’ve got receipts going back 6 years or so totaling north of $100,000. The vast majority of them from a long term owner out of LOTO that took care of the boat with an open check book. He had the top ends done at 275 hours, trailer rebuilt. transom done (by Shogren), etc. It was facetiously serviced as well.

Ya....I hope that is current pricing. I have Merc 38 pitch CNC 5 blade 15* Rake 1200's that were $6,500/ea new 3 years ago and have heard they are over $10,000/ea now if you can find them. 🤯
