I have a few things for sale on craigslist. a guy texted me wants to buy something and pay me via pay pal and send it to missouri. I don't really use it except to buy stuff online sometimes . Theres no way for him to get into my bank account right ? Obviously id get payment first before shipping. I'm just not comfortable with online purchasing /selling. I want to see cash in my hand or see the product in person. just paranoid i guess.....

I've successfully used PayPal for hundreds of sales and purchases alike over the past 5 years - plus. I have never had a single issue.

Oh, I've purchased classic cars with lots of zeros without hesitation.

for him to pay you the only info he really needs is your email address. If you get an email from PayPal asking you to click on a link.............it's phony. I have been using (buying and selling) Paypal since they went into business and never had any problems.

WTF? That's crazy. Do you just give them your email?

That's what I was thinking. It's on there screen where you slide your card. Not sure how it works.

Paypal is legit, but don't forget that they take like 3% though.

Yep, what Zaairman said, and if it's more than $500 bucks if you don't have a paypal premier account you can't withdraw more than $500 a month from your paypal account. The premier account takes a slightly higher fee.

Yes.I've had firsthand exp with their evil ways...

But is that any better/worse/safer than a "regular" bank or credit-card company?

I've been fucked by both WFB and BofA, that's why I closed my accounts at both :thumbsdown

Pay Pal is scary for the buyer. Seller just needs to click on the email when the money has been transferred. Then send items to buyer.

Buyer depends on the seller to send items to them. If buyer is scamming they simply close the Banking Account before buyer gets wise.

I like that as the seller. As a buyer, if the seller had no history I would pass. No matter how good the deals were.

I sell/buy stuff on CL all the time. I only deal with $ in hand at a public place. You wont believe the things people would buy? I got tired of Ebay/Paypal taking about 18% of your sale now.

PayPal is legit, but it sounds like you're being set up for a scam. As someone else said be careful of any link you are sent that is "supposed" to go to PayPal.

Continuing on with the discussion....

They are a trusted brand name.

I too have heard the horror stories, but then have also heard good things too.

I'm about to launch a website and am using a secure forms processor (rather than going with a database/SSL option.) PayPal is payment gateway on many of the secured forms providers and I'm still leaning heavily towards them - if anything, for the brand trust that comes with them.

The site SloWhacka put up is interesting, but seems more like a money driven blog with affiliate links at every turn. They suggest National Merchant Bancard, which despite the cheesy looking website, is now a division of Wells Fargo.

Any other PayPal seller stories? Good or bad?

Mikey, I use PayPal all the time. I'm buying a $750 lower unit from Minnesota using PayPal right now. Its easy and simple. As said before, as a seller there is little to no risk. As a buyer.... make sure the person is somewhat trustworthy.

If you sell using pay pal and ship to a unconfirmed address or buyer picks up himself then you can get screwed. People think once it hits your account you are paid but if buyer uses a stolen credit card it can take up to three months before caught and paypal will reverse charges.

If the buyer offers more than asking price, wants to handle shiping or refers to your item for sale as "is your item still for sale on craigslist" and not refering to the name of actual item you can pretty much bet its a scam.

We have a boat listed on craigslist right now and you would not belive how many letters we have gotten from so called service men that are over seas and want to buy it sight un-seen using paypal and will have friend pick up. All the letters refer to the boat as "item for sell". they all offered an extra 100 or 200 as to take it of the market. Paypal sight itself will tell you these letters are a scam and charges can be reversed and its in your terms of service that you agree to when you sign up.

Pay pal not your thing or just don't like it .
Use Fed Ex or UPS put the money in a box .Get the box insured for the amount of money in the box .
The box is insured there is no way any one can lose .

I have had a paypal acct for years but rarely use it except for the once or twice a year I buy something off of ebay.

This fall, my paypal acct got hacked and I had about $2k worth of fraudulent charges to my AMEX acct through paypal. When I called AMEX to dispute the charges, they suggested that I first contact paypal to see what they would do.

Since paypal is not a bank, they are not required to handle disputes the same way that a credit card company does. Eventually paypal refunded all of my money, but it took them about 3 months and I had to cover the cost of the charges while they investigated.

In hindsight, if this were to ever happen again I would just file a claim with amex and let them sort it out with paypal. Paypal's customer service sucks and the only reason I still have my acct with them is that there are times when paypal is the only option for completing a transaction.
