Hello, I go to havasu about 3 times a year, I am coming from a yamaha jet boat 20 inch of draft give or take.
Thinking of stepping up to a i/o 32ft monterey with 40" draft is this too much to Hit pirates den from havasu? Or cruise parker?

Only on Thursday if you don’t know the river.

I think pirates is fine just don’t go past needles to Laughlin and Parker is good except the one turn forget the name you will want to stay on plane and in the deep lane

River Island. Stay to the left of the island going up river even though it seems counterintuitive to be on that side going up river. The right will jack up an I/O, which I learned the hard way.

Does that include the drive hanging down? If not up river past Castle Rock should be avoided. The water upriver has been low last several trips we've been there.

Don't go past Big Bend and like OD1 said stay towards the CA side coming and going just down river from Fox's or plan on impacting the drive.

Some of those Monterey's can be heavy tugs depending on the style of boat (Think pocket cruiser). Stay on Lake Havasu and you'll be fine. 👍

That boat isn’t drafting 40 inches on plane.. I’d seriously doubt it

Which model ss, I worked for monterey in the early 2000s and the 268ss was 28" and the 298ss would pull 30" off plane

I don't have any firsthand experience with that model, I wasn't working there when that model came out.

Sorry, man I was hoping you had one of the earlier models since I have spend decent amount of time in those boats

I just looked it up……

It has 2ft of draft.……..

It is 3ft with lower unit in down position.

Is that bad?

Where did you find that? Only thing I found in writing was the manual. So 2ft/3ft is easily manageable for the river right?
Here is what I found…….

I’ve pulled one very similar to this off the rocks/sandbar just below Foxes. Made my little ski boat look like I was pulling a container ship! It was on a Thursday morning and you could see the sand bar from a mile away!
Look those martinis weren’t gonna make themselves.

Think we getting side tracked here...
I don't plan to make it my number 1 destination just if my buddies go can I go?
South of Foxes you’d be fine. Might get a few middle fingers though lol.

You could make it north of Foxes but you better know the river. Adding a lot of boat traffic into that equation would make it “difficult”.

Keep this flow chart handy. It is a little less pertinent for up lake from Havasu as it takes a while for the flow to get down from Davis dam.

In Parker above Roadrunner bar, I’d suggest only running at flow above 9K-14k CFS ( preferably 14k) unless you know the river like the back of your hand. ( there is a pretty large rock bar between foxes and roadrunner up closer to foxes) There are places that look fine, but you can be on a rock bar in a second. Below Roadrunner bar, you are pretty much good as it is a fairly constant depth unless the dam is really shutting off water. ( 4k cfs and below)

Up river from Havasu might be a challenge unless you know the channels. Just because the flow out of Davis is high it might not be where you are on that stretch from Havasu to Pirates because it takes so long for the release to get down that far. Just because Havasu is full doesn’t mean the river up north is good to go, it’s about the Davis release and how long that release has been high. The good news it is “mostly” all sand bottom below Pirates unlike in Parker which is rock. Use the release data, take your time you’ll be fine.

The same link below to the flow rates updates automatically.

LOL from my old dock up by Parker dam

If you don't know the river stay south of Fox's. As stated above you can take the CA side to get to Fox's when cruising north but don't get too close to the CA side, it's shallow over there too. Past Fox's you're fine in the middle, but turn around at Castle Rock Shores.

If your buddies are going. Go on their boat. Problem solved.

Otherwise, I would stick to the lake. It doesn't sound like you know the river well. It can get challenging quick. Release schedules, etc... That's not exactly a small river boat either.

Just my .02 of course.

I really appreciate the feed back, I understand it's unconventional and I get it's not best. I just don't want to drag it there to not just cruise around. I don't plan to speed up and down the river and understand my enjoyment would be better at the lake up north.

Unless you're planning on sleeping on the boat...which probably won't work in Parker....why not just buy a more suitable Parker boat? Then people will wave at you with their whole hand instead of just part of it

I think most of us would under estimate the depth needed to float our boats, add getting on plane it another story, some boats/operators really dig a hole.

most stern drive and outboard are going to draft 24-30 inches

Draft does not increase proportionately with boat size.

Parker is rougher than havasu anymore with the wakeboard boats.. you actually need a monster to cruise it anymore..

Only time I actually had drives come out of the water in my 270 was in Parker.. 😳

Half of you guys are hyping me up, (unsure if legit or waiting for me to fail) other half telling me stay away. I would just float it n park it not cruise around at wide open just 15/20mph to hit a spot or two

Those of us “hyping” you up are just saying how it goes in Parker. There’s plenty of space for those who understand what’s running there.

It’s a little too much of boat for a typical weekend. Stay south of Foxes and you’re safe. Don’t throw a 3ft wake and “most” will be cool.

At the end of the day it’s a federal water way. But it’s always encouraged “small” extremely high performance boats. If you treat the river/lake as such you’ll be fine.

Oh 100% be respectful. I not trying to go speed, block waterway, create issues. Just take i, post up halfway between casino and pirates den. Post up at pirates den drink a beer cruise back at 20mph.

You’ll be fine. The only advice I’d offer would be either idle around or get on it (30mph+). That size of boat throws a decent wake at “almost on plane” speeds.
