Wife and sister are planning a trip to see the home country.

They have never been there and they don't really have much of an idea of where to start. I need a nice, more important safe, area for them to venture out from. No car at this point.

If in Dublin, I think 2 must dos are the Guinness factory tour and visiting the book of Kells in the Trinity college library.

If they do rent a car and head out - the left hand driving will take some getting used to, the rural roads are very narrow and there are lots of tractors to be cautious of when you pass them.

Stay at the Clarence in Dublin...at least in Dublin do a tour, also do Jameson tour, Guiness tour, Trinity college....then spend 3-4 days on a bus tour around the island.

June is the plan.

I take it, like all cities, there is an area to avoid.

LOL no golf, I took her to the course in Parker to try it and lets say it wasn't fun, it was hilarious for me but her not so much

Is Ireland a dangerous place to visit?

I think I would try to visit some of the old castles and ruins if I was going.

.

LOl that’s my question. I figure every town has it's iffy area. I’m most looking for a solid, fun, safe base camp for her.

They don’t actually do that in Ireland.. Nobody wears green during St Patrick’s day etc. That’s an American tradition.

Watched a history documentary on it once and if there was gonna be a color it would have been blue, not green. Lol

Just went on a National Geographic hiking tour for 10 days this past summer. Never felt any danger at all other than the danger we put ourselves into every night drinking Guinness and Whiskey. Dublin was great. Countryside was great. Everyone was friendly and the history was amazing. Castles, libraries, museums and live music in the pubs made the trip really enjoyable.
Oh, the hiking was great too!
Stayed at the Brooks Hotel in Dublin, Glandalough Hotel Wicklow. The International Hotel in Kilarney. Dingle Benners Hotel in Dingle and the Park House in Galway. Most had bars and a restaurant.

As with any touristy city, there is some crime of opportunity. I met up with a friend's brother there who is a Garda (cop) and Grafton Street in Dublin does have a lot of thefts from tourist. Grafton Street is the "shopping" district near Trinity College. All the above suggestions for things to see in Dublin are good. Also try to do Kilmainham Gaol (old prison), very big in Irish history. and if you can, stay at the Westbury Hotel...very cool place. You won't need a car if you are staying in Dublin. plenty of transportation and easy walking. But I suggest to get over the worries and rent a car to see more of the country. The countryside and villages are the best part!! The driving is mentally exhausting, but not hard. you just don't realize how we take driving for granted and how much you have to pay attention there. We put 1100 miles on the car in about 12 days

So you're saying my green "Kiss me I'm Irish" shirt would be a no go?

Dublin had some cool hop on/hop off buss systems that you can take all over the city and surrounding areas. It was well worth it when we went on our honeymoon and we had a car.

DRINK GUINNESS it tastes so much better there!

Jameson tour is about 2.5 hours south of Dublin.... FYI

I highly suggest renting a car ... driving on wrong side of the car and street is crazy fun

I looked at one website $138 euro for a week for a manual transmission in a Ford Fiesta.... $309 for automatic transmission.....

I go for 10 days in August, I went for two weeks 8 years ago... 1200 miles on rental car in 11 days..... love love love Ireland

Drive the ring of Kerry and ring of Dingle. Visit the Cliffs of Mohr and Aran islands. Cities to visit, Galway, Dingle, Cork, Kinsale.

I wouldn't waste too much time in Dublin, get out and see the small towns and places listed above

If you’re in county Mayo, look up my wife’s family and have a snort of their homemade potcheen. That’ll put hair on your chest.

Wife and mil and her sisters went several years ago and had a great time . Stayed with a cousin in Donigal county . They took her to Waterford on a day day trip to see the Crystal factory. She had never been that far away. It was only a couple hundred miles away...
Oh, the roads are very narrow.
