To start, I really dislike painting and am a carpenter by trade. I hired a painter from work a couple years ago to paint about 1200sq' of my house and he recommended the paint, Sherwin Williams. I bought about 1300.00 dollars of it from Lowes, which included 15 gallons of HGTV Sherwin Williams flat ultra white with a guarantied one coat coverage. Fast forward a year and a half and the wife and I painted the downstairs living room and hallway ceilings ourselves with the leftover paint, about 500sq' It took 5 coats to cover the light butter scotch existing color to make it look right. We had to by another 5 gallons to get it done. My geustimate is that it took 5+ gallons for the latest endeavor.

We still have another +/- 600sq' of ceiling to go...and I really dislike painting.

Any recommendations for better coverage and or less coats?

I just repainted several rooms in our house and used Sherwin Williams paint. It covered great with only one coat, but I bought it at the Sherwin Williams store. I also bought one of the higher grades they have. I'm not sure if the paint at Lowes is different, but you would think light butterscotch would be an easy color to cover.

Why flat? You dont want eggshell (or even satin) that might bounce more light around the room? They also seem to be easier to clean.

What is your method of application and are you letting the paint completely dry prior to a second coat if needed?

Typically you get 300. Sq ft per gallon

are you in a 15,000 sq ft casa

I painted my house 3 different shades of WHITE ( designer ) and only spent $937 @ Dunn Edwards primer and paint

but it’s a fantastic white…..

Any of the better paint/primer sub brands will work. If it’s not paint/primer then it’ll take a few coats. The up-sell from those add scuff resistant, quick dry, more colors etc. The downside is they start getting pretty thick and harder to work with/cut in.

The guy at the Sherwin-Williams store told me that it is different. However, he could have just been trying to make a sale. But most of us know that many manufacturers sell inferior products to big box stores at a cheaper price, so I would not be surprised if he was correct. The labels were different, and the type of paint that I got from Lowe's was not sold at the SW store. So there's that.

I’m just a Joe Homeowner that has always used Sherwin Williams paint. For interior, I use their Super Paint. It was much better when it was not a primer/paint in one. But, that was days of old. Still, a coat of primer, then two coats of color are what seems to work best. This is on orange peel textured walls, using a 3/4” nap roller. Follow the directions on the paint can. I’m a little quick between coats, but it works out in the end. In dark rooms, sometimes a coat of tinted primer, then one coat of color works fine. I’ve been using flat paint for walls and ceilings.

Per multiple SW stores, they claim flat sheen cleans as well as semi-gloss. Maybe for light markings or dirt. I’m no expert, but this is what works for us. No way you should need five coats. Put some primer on and see how it goes.

Like a lot of things, painting requires good prep, some technique, and various levels of patience to have a desirable results.

Buy Sherwin Williams paint from their stores. There’s like 8 different levels of paint. Their higher end paints have great coverage.

A pro painter friend says Home Depot's best, Behr Marquee, is the best.

He was a Dunn Edwards guy for most of his career.

Let your wife pick the color. Don’t even hint about your opinion.

if the color sucks and you had ANYTHING to do with it, you will never hear about it. Conversely if it sucks and she picks it, you will NEVER hear about it unless you are dumb enough to bring it up… and then the color will be your fault For ever more.

That’s my recommendation.

My response usually is something like.
It doesn't matter what i think, do you like it?
If not just go get another can of paint and do it again.
Eventually she will be happy ;)

We were painting ceilings only in a living room and hallway, flat paint seemed to be the best for this as they are large rooms with 8' ceiling heights. The floor joist have a 20' span and the tape job isn't great, flat hides the seams.

Friend works for Behr. She Said they strive to be the best. I have been using it for 18 years now. Houses I built in 2005 still look great. The 20% off I get is nice. Ordering paint at 9 o clock for the next day is another plus.

Recently used this high dollar Benjamin Moore customer bought
20230121_182817.jpg
. Almost double the price. Not as good as Marquee but equivalent to the old premium plus. They keep changing the names for marketing and of course raising the prices.

I bought 10 gallons of Kilz a couple years ago per direction of the painter I hired. It worked well but the fumes were horrible! They painted on the hottest weekend on record in Western WA... 112F for that Saturday and Sunday. I had the AC running full tilt while they painted and the ex wife and I spent that Saturday outside the entire day, but she wouldn't go to a hotel for the night so we stayed in the house that night. I didn't feel right for a month. That stuff works great but it takes days for it to off gas.

It was below freezing when I painted so airing out the house wasn't an option, neither was being in the house with those fumes again.

YES !

Flat hides imperfections

So if you have a 4 ft wide hall way with a window at the end of the hall way … IMPORTANT!

Run your paint roller the short distance 4 ft strokes & NOT the long way EASY way !

you will see all the roller strokes !

So be careful which direction you run the roller.

I learned this the hard way !

Running a fan helps after It dries….

This 100%, especially on the prep.
My wifes idea of painting an average room is a trip to Lowe's to purchase some paint and supplies and get started relying on someone else to cleanup...ever fuking time...😁

Buy yourself a quality roller cover and frame. 1'' nap should work good for you. 15 bux for a cover is well worth it.

We've been running this cieling paint for the last couple years with good results. Covers well. It's a bit heavy bodied so it takes some thinning. If your application is right it should cover butterscotch in 2 coats.
When you order your white cieling paint and ask for "flat white cieling paint" they will most likely just send you.out the door with a bucket of paint with no tint in it and call.it pure white. It's white but doesn't cover for shit. You need to pick a white color # and have the flat/cieling paint tinted. Same goes for your white wall and trim paint.

Next on the list is base and casing paint, I used Sherwin Williams Pro-Classic a couple of years ago for the front living room and dining room. I sanded and prepped the new wood base in the garage and rolled it and relied on the cheap factory primer on the trim. If I remember correctly I used a combo of short nap roller and a brush. It turned out alright, but after looking at reviews now of the same SW paint not so sure if I should switch? I don't have a sprayer so looking for advice with something that will lay down well with brush / roller.

Sherwin is pricey! We use their hybrid for cabinets and trim but not much of their other paints. Typically now using Dunn Edwards or Behr.

The SW Emerald UTE satin brushes out great on interior trim. Been my go to for a few years. Much better than the sw pro classic.

We used the last of the Sherwin Williams HGTV flat white ceiling Lowes shitty paint last night. It looks OK with 4 four coats (2 coats of KILLZ premier!. I would not recommend SW HGTP paint for anything, doesn't cover well and takes 4X the quantity for acceptable coverage.

Save yourself the money and buy Dunn Edwards. Were the walls already painted? Did you sand them lightly before painting, if the walls were previously painted? Did you wait long enough between coats? Those are all critical items. If you don't let the coats dry before recoating you just peel off the first coat and mix it in with the second coat and make a crappy surface. Buy quality roller covers like mentioned above and wrap in tape then remove the tape to get any loose fibers out.
Paint and primer in 1 is a gimmick and overpriced. On new surfaced walls that have never been painted, they need an actual primer. Primer is a sealer and creates a surface for the paint to stick to. If you just put paint on fresh drywall it will suck all the moisture out of the paint and leave a shitty finish.
The 1 coat guarantee... what's the application process? Rolled or sprayed with an airless sprayer? The only way to apply paint and have a good finish with one coat is to apply it with an airless sprayer.
