Man. That was the worst wreck I’ve seen since Justin Wilson. Super happy they walked away.

Hope Foyt's boy can pull it off in the red, white and blue.

That tire over the stands was a scary sight, happy it didn't hit anyone.
I was getting annoyed no comment about the tire. But as you said. It seemed to fly over the stands and into an open space. Thank goodness

They also never had a solid replay of the wheel and tire flying off. Wondering what really happened?

That’s true. But they did show a couple replays where it appeared (to go between the two stand sections of fans).
So I’m hoping no fans were hurt. Maybe a car or RV or two.

Here is the car the tire hit, I am sure glad the tire missed the crowd. I am still not sure 1 lap finish is fair to the drivers but I am glad it didn't finish under yellow.

Thank goodness it’s just a little body work and I’d be surprised if that’s the only car it hit. . That thing flew a long ways. I agree Need more than one lap. But still better than ending under yellow. Hopefully they continue learn. And apply.

Marcus Ericsson is an arrogant little ass.. glad Newgarden got him at the finish. Karma for him pinching Pato in the grass and making him spin 👍

And then to listen to Ericsson blame everyone and everything a say how he was robbed 🤣🤣

Karma Bitch!!

I missed what you said about pinching Pato into the grass so I can’t comment.
Watching his interview after however once think he has some points that a one lap shoot out at Indy is not a good idea.
That said. I’d rather have that than finished under caution or red. But for Indy maybe a 3-5 lap once. Maybe twice try.

Also. Note. Not a huge fan or hater of Penske. But do like Newgarden. And the way he handles himself.

It's been 15 years since I was in the pits at Indy yet I'm still invested. I got pretty upset when Kirkwood went into the wall upside down, but when the replay showed the tire going over the wall, I went into fucking tilt.

In 1999 three fans were killed when a tire and hub went into the stands in Charlotte. The race was cancelled within minutes. I was reliving that horror until they announced no one had been hurt. It was a huge relief.

The green white checkers was an abomination. It's never happened at any IndyCar race, much less the 500. It was unsafe, and Ericcson was screwed out of the win.

I've watched several 500s finish under yellow. It never bothered me, that's racing. "Giving the fans a green flag finish" isn't fucking racing, it's entertainment.

I think you need to watch the replay again.

And as I said, that finish was stupid and unsafe.

I think I was flashing back to that day as well. I was like. Holy Crap. Please. No. No. Thankfully all is good

Was and have never been in the pits. Can totally relate to the rest of your post.

I don’t think trying to finish under green is a bad thing. But one lap isn’t the answer either.

Nope.. I watched it several times. Pato had him and Marcus pinched him big time because it was the only way he could keep him behind him… period.. It’s not hard to see it. Watch again.

Why unsafe?
Not to speak for rrr. But
I think the unsafe part is. You have basically two turns to make or break a pass. No body is going to give an inch. And it’s just a high speed wreck ( for ratings not about the racing ) in the making.

Racing is there to get eyeballs. Green white checkers at an oval race get eyeballs.

How is that different from any last lap?
What I was trying to say. Is it shouldn’t be one last crazy lap. Make it a couple or a few on a restart.
Last lap that is already under green. Go for it.

Racing is also there to have a fair and safe finally. Not saying I didn’t enjoy it. But someone got screwed by the one lap win or die
Last lap. He could have made it very scary if he chose not to lift and concede

Last lap.

Racing has risk. If the drivers don’t like the risk, or don’t like the rules put out by the sanctioning body, they don’t have to race.

No one got “screwed”, those are the rules made by the sanctioning body. Everyone is bound to the same rules. You ever seen a green white checker on a race that wasn’t televised? I’ve never seen one and never been in one. You

The standards for these green/white checkers got a lot tighter after sports betting was legalized.. there aren’t many cautious s for phantom debris any more now that the oddsmakers got involved.

Don’t disagree with phantom debris
Whatever fits the narrative/ratings .

You know F1 was considering adding sprinklers to tracks at one point, right?

If you are watching racing on network or cable TV it is a made for TV movie.

Yes it is racing, but it is for entertainment.

Reading comprehension is not your friend is it? Who said it was scripted?

The racing is tailored for broadcast television….Because it is broadcast on television.

You are whining about green/white checkers, those were made specifically for television to get a quick exciting finish so they can get on to the next program.

Yore the one who wrote if yore watching network or cable tv it’s made for movies.( which means scripted) My reading comprehension is fine. Thanks though.

Wasn’t whining really either. But I get and have seen often where yore coming from.

I think your view of this is skewed from being part of a race team. Race teams see the "show" differently. Racing is entertainment to most everyone else. Personally I think that it should have stayed yellow after the Pato crash, they had plenty of room to keep the cars circulating down on the apron, Newgarden was leading at that point so for me, it's kind of fitting that he was able to win it. Late race restarts just lead to more crashes and I abhor the green, white, checker BS. Really surprised that no one crashed on that last lap.

Agreed. Not to mention Ericsson blocked Pato last year on the last lap and pinched him down this year. Screw that whiny little bitch. Should have kept his pie hole shut in the after race interview. Glad to see an American driver win on this important weekend.

. . . and that tire flying over the fence and the deafening silence for the minute or two afterwards, man I expected the worst. Saw it live and thought for sure it was headed for the stands.

All in all, a great race and I was entertained.

Why unsafe?
Because mechanical grip provided by the tires, in conjunction with aero downforce, allow the cars to lap at speeds over 220 MPH.

When I measured tire temps in the pit at Indy after a five or ten lap practice stint, they would be around 218° F. After the ¾ lap preceding Lap 199 and approaching the green, they would have been around 180° F. If temperature and grip are linear, and it's reasonably close, that's about a 20% reduction.

The front and rear wings of the car are adjusted to provide the maximum downforce of about 2,200 lbs at the anticipated race speed, which this year was between 219-223 MPH. That's 600 lbs more than the weight of the car. Any speed less than that produces less downforce, and the car isn't as stable. In addition, when the cars are packed up during the first lap, the turbulence produced by wings of the leading cars produces even less stability through the field.

When the green waved on Lap 199, the tires weren't up to racing temperature. The lead cars were going about 180 MPH when they crossed the start finish line. Mechanical and aero grip was deficient, and didn't maximize until the last corner.

Combine that with the aggression of the remaining 21 drivers on track trying to improve multiple positions, and it was absolutely and significantly more dangerous than if the cars had first circulated a couple of laps at 130 MPH before the green flag.

By the end of the lap you could see the lead cars of Newgarden and Ericsson were stuck quite well as they aggressively weaved out of Turn 4. But it was quite possible one or two cars near the front of the field could have washed up into the wall earlier exiting Turn 1, and caused a dangerous melee involving most of the field. The aeroscreen provides much improved driver protection, and the tubs are built to take huge impacts at speeds over 200 MPH, but things happen in racing that aren't anticipated.

So that's why it was unsafe. It's much different than NASCAR, because as I said, the aero devices on an IndyCar at 220 MPH produces about 2,200 lbs of downforce. The stock cars aren't even close to being that aero dependent, they're slower, and they take longer to accelerate because of their greater weight.

Hope this helps.

I agree with everything there, but it if was that big of an issue, we both know there is a technology that would eliminate that problem and allow drivers to hit the track with warm tires. But it is disallowed in Indycar.

As for O'Ward and Ericsson, if Ericsson had moved up and not taken the line through the corner he did, he would have crashed. Turbulence from Pato's car would have taken the downforce from Ericsson and he would have been the one in the wall. That's exactly why Rosenqvist crashed in T1 after the car that passed him immediately moved down in his path.

The situation was on Pato, because he stuck his nose in there. Ericsson wasn't obliged to lift or move because Pato thought he had the position.

But that wouldn't have made any difference in this situation. Tire warmers are used prior to pit stops. Even if they were allowed, it's not like the crews could have hauled warmers and extension cords out to pit lane during the red flag.

That’s true, but it is also racing.

If they were truly worried about performance, safety and were allowed to, every team would have had a tire warming rig on their car’s tires.

But that does not make racing as exciting.

You and I are going to see this differently. Pato was fully alongside of Marcus and got pushed onto the grass. Felix had Joseph pass him on the outside then move low causing aero wash and out into the grey he went. Pato was attempting to pass on the inside, I watched plenty of cars go side by side thru the turns all race. In my view, Marcus did not leave any space to race.

Pato had just pitted.. his tires were in a lot better shape than Ericsson who pitted at lap 171. You don’t know that.. Ericsson knew EXACTLY where Pato was (trust me) He cut him off intentionally. It was a dick move.

I’ll agree to disagree 😉😁
