Looking to purchase a boat in Vegas, I live in CA but have an address in AZ I can use for registration. (Brothers Address).

Buying from a private party(Seller has pink) but will be financing the boat. My question is how can I avoid CA sales tax? Can I register the boat in AZ and register the trailer in CA like a previous thread I've read?

RD said the search feature woulb be back up and running today.
If buying from PP in NV, and immediatly registering in AZ, you will not need to pay taxes.

Reg it in NV, no tax, about $70 a year, no NV address needed, and you won't have to pay AZ non residence registration $269 ish.

I don’t even have a brother in AZ and that’s my setup. In AZ, you register boats with the hunt’n n fish‘n department. with a bro in AZ you can save the out of state registration fee, which is $200? And only pay the registration which is $25?

If it’s being financed, the finance company may try and collect sales tax and mail it off even though it’s not required. I went through that years ago and they just wouldn’t hear any of it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Im under the impression the only way to avoid paying "non-resident" registration is to have utilities in your name, not just an address.

Any recommendations for transporters? From St.George, UT to Sacramento or Aurora, CO to Sacramento.

If it’s being financed, I’d be amazed if they are going to let you register it anywhere except the address you used on your application, but I could be wrong.

Fingers crossed! It seemed like the loan officer in a round about way was saying to register it in AZ?? I will be suprised also.

I live in California and just bought a boat last month. Wasnt sure if I was going to finance it or not. Had the cash to buy it outright. The finance company said it wanted to handle the tax and registration. I said no. I was going to buy it and register it myself. They were ok with that, but then it becomes a refi, not a purchase in there eyes.
I did the non resident AZ reg on the boat and Cali reg on the trailer thing. Saved me about $6500 in fees. I still am not sure if I will finance the boat or not, but the option is there. The whole thing cost me $259 for the boat and $125 for the trailer. The bank will probably want to handle the paperwork, but if you have the ability to buy it and then refi it, that way you get to control the fees.

That’s what I did. They had to file a UCC with the state to show financing since there isn’t really a “title” to lien like in CA. I ended up keeping the trailer out of the purchase with the bank since they wanted power of attorney from the seller in order to register the trailer themselves. I thought it was weird and just handled it myself. Registered boat and trailer in AZ. Trailer is insured under the boat policy and I have an AZ policy and didn’t want to play registration/insurance games.

This, check with the finance company, since they are going to want you to add them as a lien holder, they may require you to register it where you are a resident.

My primary residence is in CA but I own a place in Parker (deeded land) and have utilities in my name. These don’t make you a resident, a driver’s license does. But only after six months of continuous residency. If you don’t have a AZ DL, you will continuously pay out of state registration. This is still cheaper than paying sales tax on a private party purchase.
