If you were to buy a new engine, who would you choose?

My 496 HO is getting up in hours. I've been looking at EFI 750 HP engines.
Who would you go with outside of a factory merc racing engine

Pfaff is close to me and they currently service my boat
Teague?
Boostpower?

Thanks in advance

If Pfaff is where you have been taking your boat, then that would be at the top of my list.

I don’t think Boostpower is doing as many motors as they used to, but you could always reach out.

Teague is also a great choice. You are probably looking at something along the lines of their 800efi.

750 is getting up there, and I’d guess a package at that power level is going to be 40-60k from a reputable builder before rigging. Plus an XR (or SCX) drive and steering, if you don’t already have it. Plus setup, etc.

I’m guessing you’ll have 50-75k into this project before you’re done, to do it right- possibly more if you’re dropping it at a shop and writing a check.

Not all hulls can safely handle that level of power- you’re looking at 85+ MPH in most singles at that power level- and the associated maintenance and breakage issues.

You are probably better off selling your current boat and buying one with big power that is already dialed in. I’ve kicked around the same idea with my Lavey- but at around 600HP. Realistically, I know that I’ll end up with 80-100k in a boat worth 60k at the absolute max and with a very limited buyer pool. There are some really nice boats out there for 100k that are already dialed in.

Excellent advice.

Couldn’t have said it better imo.

Based on the hours you have you use the boat often unless it was purchased in that realm hrs idk but I’d assume it gets use. Don’t over look the simplicity of having a great time on the water with a reliable setup. Reliable hp = $$$$

Also the closer the shop the better I think. Plan to have some hiccups and hope that you don’t. Much easier/painless when the builder is closer to you in my opinion.

Amen.

I've seen people buy engines from some double throw down engine builder, on the other side of the country...

And then have to do it all over again locally, cause they couldn't afford to pull the engine and ship it back.

Crazy.

I had Pfaff build 5-6 motors over the years, but that was while Paul and Gordy were still there. I have no idea what the reputation is like now.

If I ever repower vs sell the first person I'm going to call is Bostick. All of who you listed are great (professionally).. I'm a fan of his stuff and they seem to stand behind it. I'm a fan of factory sealed power though, why not look at a Merc 700 package with a warranty?

I would love to know the price difference between merc power and an EFI with the aforementioned builders. I would think a 700 merc would be 45k or so but I don't know

Boostpower is pretty much out of the game for new customers. He'll service existing clients but that about it.

I bought a similar setup to what your looking for.

I would get a teague 825 if I was doing it all over.

I mail ordered this. lol
Well really I drove it up there but it was shipped back to me. From Lodi to Anaheim it cost 120.00 pre covid. I was so happy with the overall experience with Grose I wouldn’t care what the shipping cost was.
