We have had a dog living with us for the last 35+ years. The first few we raised as puppies and went through all the puppy stuff and as we got older we decided to forgo that stage and look at "used dogs." We always steered toward mellow breeds, labs, retrievers, etc. The latest one, who we adopted 5 years ago is a German Shepard, who I was a little skeptical of due to the breed. We ended up at a Greater California German Shepard Rescue adoption event to meet Remington, a 2 year old GS. They have a 30 day Foster to Adopt program, which, if you and the dog aren't compatible, you are required to return the dog. A member of the group comes and visits your home to insure your home is safe, fenced and if you have other pets, they get along. He moves in and after 2 days, he wasn't going anywhere. Completely trained, no bad habits other than the ones he learned from us.

If you are thinking of getting a family dog, look at the rescue groups. The first link below is the one Remy was from, the second link was for our previous dog.

No such thing as a used dog, just a re-homed dog.
My last one was a last chance pup, about 8 years old. (Daughter and son in law had him for the first 6.5 years) Gave him a life of jeepin' and jet boatin' for another 9+ years. And an acre and a half of freedom.

Looks like a handsome pup, congrats to you.

Please rescue. We have rescued for the last 15 yrs and the dogs know. The shelters are so overcrowded and dogs are loosing their lives for space. It angers me to no end how many irresponsible dog owners there are out there.

Here's our rescue Titan (aka- meatball) cuz he's all muscle, like a side of beef w/legs. Haha
We resued him, and he us, at abt 1yr. Old. He had very little training when we got him. We had him officially trained by Darcy and Emily at Hope dog training and boarding in Norco Ca.
He is such a good dog. Super gentle, loves people, dogs, loves to travel and very affectionate. I can take his from him while eating, pet him while eating he just wags his tail. We take him many places w/us and people are drawn to him and he loves it. He's a super star at the races. People (other racers mostly) come by the pits asking for him. He's quite entertaining and a joy to have in our lives. We rescued him from Ozzie and Friends Pet rescue in La Puente, Ca.

Shelters are a great solution. Another option for consideration but same concept might be to check with a true service dog school, ex., Guide Dogs of the Desert in Palm Springs or GD of CA (I think) in Chatsworth. These would typically be labs, golden doodle type pure bred dogs that wash out of their program for whatever reason. AWESOME animals. Bonus- puppy raisers usually get first choice at their dog, should it wash out. Plus, you have someone who knows the animal’s history, if needed.

Whether shelter or service organization, you and the dog win.

Couldn't agree more about getting a dog from a rescue.

Here's Rosie. Had her for 2 years now. http://www.dobiesos.net/

I didn’t realize you had a Dober too.
The old guy Rocky says Hey!

Did she come to you liking water or was it learned with you?
All of mine came with a disposition similar to the wicked witch. It will melt dogs if its not in a bowl.

Took Millie almost a year watching Rocky have fun with water before she didn’t bolt any time I got out the hose.
But? She learned.

Brix joined our forever family 5 months into his life. He was left for unknown reasons, adopted and returned again because he “attacked their bird.” Needless to say I think he enjoys his new life much more than his previous ones. 1 year young and is obsessed with my kids, loves other dogs, protects us all from the big bad mailman.

Excellent choice. We are a foster family for a golden retriever rescue. It's a great feeling when we are able to find a good home
This is our foster pup now, Luna. 1 year old golden that was basically abandoned

Looks like she has some rottie in her.
I get that comment quite a bit and I suppose it is possible. She has the natural stub tail of the Cattle Dog and is very strong. Smart but stubborn at times over the top. We are working on all of that and she is making big strides. I have not done a DNA on her but have researched what type she might be. Australian Shep and Australian Cattle Dog which started getting bred in TX years ago....there by refer to as the Texas Heeler. Those pics don't show it but she has the gray coat under all the dark coat. When I brush her its primarily chunks of gray fur coming off

Its taken quite an adjustment but she is turning into quite the pup. After Roxy passed she had big paws to fill for sure
