It's a goal of mine.

Except I hate the South. Anyone want to start a decent So-Cal league?

Why don't you run a 410 or 360, lots of races in so-cal and with no wing they're a handful of fun

They run them in Chico, California and I believe Placerville still runs Sprints. So does Perris down there.
Chico has the Silver Cup and gold Cup races. Huge deal WOO comes out for that.
If you are serious you need to start with a 360 car. You are going to spend a fortune unless you can buy into a ride or bring sponsor $ with you. I got to hot-lap a 360 car about 35 years ago. We had a local track and I had friends who ran outlaw Super Stocks and one guy who ran a 410 Sprint. One weekend he had a little engine in because his big bullet was getting freshened.
There is nothing like it, no other form of racing in the world. Nowadays, a 950+ HP alky-injected engine in front of you, with an in-out box between your legs, a fuel cell behind you, 4 tires a wing and not much else.
Total weight isn't much. They are spending a fortune on titanium bolts to shave ounces.

I've got a friend that has one and races at Perris. He's had it for a number of years, maybe he wants to sell it.

I've raced dirt track before, and really feel that it is the high water mark for circle track motorsports.

I like drag racing, love road racing, and absolutely adore motorcycles and Moto GP..

But if I was to get into racing myself... It would be Outlaw sprints.

Are you nuts! :D

I went to Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico Ca. last summer to watch the 410 Sprints and those guys are freaking crazy. :D

I wouldn't mind owning a car and finding a good driver though, that would be a kick in the ass..

There was a girl learning to drive during the races. she almost got herself killed. I guess that's the only way to learn. :rolleyes

I agree, balls of steel and real drivers in those machines... If you get the chance go watch the WOO guys on that track in Vegas. It is fast.
Any time you can see them on a 1/2 mile instead of a 1/4 or a big 1/3rd go. On a big track the corner speeds are outrageous.

My favorite race I've ever seen was watching WOO at San Jose in early 90's. 1/2 mile oval, absolutely insanely fast racing. Picking up front tires and carrying them down the straight, smacking the brakes, pitching it sideways... Rinse and repeat.

Sammy Swindell, Steve and Mark Kinser, they were/are huge players.

My father-in-law raced spints when they were really nuts.

He's still alive today to tell the stories though.
He's a survivor.

They didn't run anywhere near the 500 ponies they run today.

ScanImage104.jpg

Even won a race or two.

Cool deal...Looks like West Cap Raceway...long gone. My dear friend, (RIP) Al Creswell drove down there. Ran number 7 in sprints.

Don Tognotti sponsored your Dad he must have been a helluva driver.

I watch them at Perris from time to time and the hauler rigs alone are becoming impressive.

I don't think I could even afford the tire sets they bring and/or waste. But if I had the means and could at least hang in the pack without hurting myself or costing the guy in the pits next to me a bunch of money I'd be all over it.

I agree it's some of the most insane racing and probably the best spectating if you want to go watch motorsports. The sport is very good ol' boy style and ego's explode but damn those guys have huge balls.

Big thing out here are the 305 winged sprints.
They've really started to catch on throughout the southwest.
The ASCS 360's are still a staple as well.
I prefer the non wing sprints, they actually back em in, which is phuking cool to watch.
With all the stagger that you run, you don't even actually have to hit the brakes.
Just lift for a millisecond, the car pitches itself hard left. Then you're back on it.
There's also drag/braking where you never lift, it's stab the brake while still under full throttle.
I got to hot lap a non wing car a while back, the sensation is unreal.

...sprint cars are the meanest/nastiest race cars on the planet, IMO.
Those guys are gladiators.

I don't think that you're ready for a sprint experience until you complete the process of taming that twin turbo Spectra......consider it training..

My pops had a glass biz back in the day and he did quite a bit of work with dean thompson, he was a crazy bastard lol and could wheel a sprint car big time. I use to love to go watch him and bubby jones do battle on the legendary ascot half mile.

What does a 360 car cost, what does a season of racing cost?

Depends on how serious of a racer you want to be. You want to run with the big boys up front. You're going to spend some big money.

You can spend 50k no problem on a season running with the big boys. Now that's ASCS. That's with out any engine failures or tossing the car.

Now outlaws... They tear some stuff up.

Chassis wise(Outlaw)...not sure what a roller costs these days.
Maxim
XXX
J&J
Motorwise...
Gaerte
Wesmar
25/40k depending on trick/lightweight parts.
Buddy of mine ships his 360 back to Oklahoma(Wesmar) for freshening every 15/20 shows...I think it's 5/8k per.
Tire wars...Hoosier's McCreary's...Right rear maybe 1 night, over $200.00 a pop.
Shitload of methanol per night...it adds up.

Man I remember heading to Ascot back in the day with my old man to watch all of these guys race! I remember sitting a few rows back and getting hit with dirt. I also remember during the main events barely being able to see during the first few laps because the exhaust fumes were so strong!!! Good times!!! I miss those days and going with him. I think I appreciate it more now that he is no longer around, wish I would have gone to more races with him. My old man ate, shit, and slept sprint cars, and midgets!

ASCS 360s are a great show. I try to get out to Devil's Bowl when they run the Spring Nationals.

I've talked to a few guys that used to run 410s, they all say the cost will eat you alive and the switch to 360s has been a good experience.

The 305s are becoming very popular around here, the Sprint Series of Texas (SST) is the sanctioning body.

If you want to try out an WoO sprinter, Smiley Sitton's driving school runs at Devil's Bowl. You gotta pay for crash damage if you put it in the fence... :eek

Do urself a favor and go to Calistoga , ca and watch them run that track. And at that point if u think you can do that track then u can race any track.

1000hp in a 1200 pound car. Lets see how big ur balls are. :)

Being from NorCal maybe u have seen that track?

I ran USAC midgets and sprints. They both are a blast. I never ran on dirt, just had no interest in it. My father was 1/2 owner of a team that ran both USAC sprint and silver crown cars. They ran both pavement and dirt. Their main driver was aiming to make it into Indy car. But that was at about the time the path from sprints to Indy car just evaporated. It's just a big black hole for your money, lol.

Been to Calistoga 20+ times, and raced a season in Petaluma with an IMCA dirt modified team. 360's are bad ass... No question... But I'm old, and will have the money to start at the bottom of the right class and not have to work my way up for financial reasons.

That's rad! It's no bigger a hole than offshore poker run boating though... Probably a lot smaller actually.

The Modified we had was a $20k brand new program, with trailer from Joe Carr. Done and dusted. If you had a dialed in sprint car with rig and spares program, my bet is you would be lucky to get $250K for the setup... Am I wrong?

For a quality set up that will be competitive I think you're probably in the ballpark. But I'm not positive. I was into it about a decade ago and caught just the tail end of the run my father was having with his team. I had just come out of barber dodge. Before that it was karts. I was a lucky little shit and didn't see many of the bills. I drove a midget for another team and I know they would not unload the car without 2 grand coming from somewhere/sponsor. Midget engines are just as much as sprint engines and generally don't last as long. Crazy little fuckers.

So, ever considered a dirt mod?
I run an outlaw dirt modified, 600 hp.2300lb methanol burning tube frame monster on a hard as a hockey puck 8in. Wide DOT tire.
They're actually harder to drive than a sprint.
Very twitchy, lift and they do wierd things.
4 link, rear steer, car hiked up, left rear moved forward tickling your ass...
They're a blast...
That said...sprints on dirt are still the ultimate.

If I could choose a series to run just for fun it would probably be some type of sports car series. Road course is just too much fun and challenging compared to oval racing. It's also a hell of a lot safer. I was lucky accident wise in everything I got in to. Only wadded up one midget in the wall. That shit fucking hurts man. Ran several cars off a road course, no biggie, no real $$$ damage.

If there was a smaller budget I would go shifter carts. They can be a blast and the competition is great.

Great series and we run all over California.

Sounds like ours. Chevelle front clip, Grand National rear end with floating axles and a four link with panhard. McCreary Street stars. Claimer class though, but we were running methanol.

It's a great class, but Sprints are where it is at, and for my imaginary money, something on a 1/2 mile oval with stones enough to pick up the front end out of a turn sounds amazing.

Hey sparkplug, you have one qualification in hand, next you need driving skills,,Dick.:rolleyes

I wouldn't call hating the south a qualification per-se, but whatever.

You're clearly an aficionado on my driving skills and background since we've met and raced before together. Right?

I remember sitting a few rows back and getting hit with dirt.

The first time a buddy took me to a race we brought our own cooler of beer.
He tells me "Make sure you keep your hand over the top of your beer, or you'll have mud";)
I remember getting home and needing to take a shower from the dirt.
Very cool racing:thumbsup

I had a bumper sticker for years that said "it ain't racing if there's no dirt in your beer"

At the San Jose race, I remember clearly the huge bathroom line between races, and it lined up past a beer cart. So you would grab a couple of beers, drink them in line, take a piss, go watch the next heat, rinse and repeat.

So I'm in the bathroom, about to put my remaining beer in my teeth and I see a guy, clearly drunk as hell and pouring his beer into the trough. I laughed and said "what the hell?" And he said "I'm sick of being the middleman for all this beer!"

I've laughed about that since. That was probably '91...

Ascot back in the day...
The turn 1 gang, show up every week with big old clear pieces of plexiglass, handles riveted on, hold em up all night protect themselves from the flying clay.
Manzanita in Phoenix. ..in between heats, guys would run out w/shovels to scrape the fence, so that the drivers could tell the corners from the back chute...
Gawd, I miss those places.

Froggystyle, thanks for starting this thread.Amazing how many dirt fans come out of the woodwork.

Midget below is the same division as yours....Circa 1974. Ran this car and others for 10 yrs in N.M.R.A West coast. Would never trade the Experience 0r Memories for anything. Had the pleasure of running with the likes of Pancho Carter, Danny Caruthers, Dean Thomson, Rick Goudy. Danny McKnight and others.Back in the day they were the cream of the crop. What a lot of us had in common was starting at the bottom as kids( six and seven years old) and moving up the ranks....1/4, 1/2, and Three Quarter Midgets. The leap to Midgets and Sprints was not too bad skill wise......Having a Sponser was another subject. Thompson went directly to Sprints with Shaver Engines! To watch a CRA Sprint Car Race at Ascot on Saturday Night when Thompson was running(and he always was).....the question was always...wonder who's going to get second?
If I had a point to make here would be... there is nothing like seat time in the sport you dream of especially, if chance may have it, you will be used for traction.
Enjoy your "Dream" Froggy .....I was never able to fullfill mine.......Steve
